P0300, p0301 thru p0310 codes that might get overlooked due to water or coolant in spark plug holes
When you get too old to turn wrenches and it's time to retire, you should think about becoming an instructor at a technical school! You would make a great teacher and I think guys like you would make a great asset to the next generation of automotive technicians!!
@@justinpeters7166 the way he explains things reminds me of alot of my instructors from when I was in tech school! He sounds just like them!

Genius is the ability to make the complex simple ... you, Sir are a genius. I'll be calling you tomorrow.
Quite possibly the most useful video I've ever seen online. Thank you for posting this. Fixed the issue in my 2008 Ford F150
Awesome feedback. Chasing the illusive misfiring one coil pack at a time...
Hi Ron. I just bought a Titan 5.4 and had it power washed. Sure enough big misfire. Your video was very helpful. I'll get to clearing out the excess water. Thanks Kev.
I really appreciate this video. I have a GM truck that randomly misfires at idle, only a handful of times per drive cycle. I don't think this video caught my exact issue but it was very informative nonetheless. It's pretty cool that you left a contract to help give people advice. Subscribed and will spread the word of your channel.
You have just earned another subscriber! I haven't tried what you said yet but you are clearly knowledgeable and your video quality rocks! Excited to watch more! Cheers!
videos like this save thousands of people untold thousands of dollars. Thanks. Keep up the excellent work
Great video. This gentleman is very skilled and seems honest too.
Just spoke with Ron via telephone call. Really cool guy. Gave me advice on what to look for on my 4.6 2003 Expedition cylinder 8 misfire. Thank you Ron. I will run a compression and switch around the coils. Thank you.
i have the same issue with my 4.6 grand marquis
I ended up having a bad coil. #8 to be exact. Bought a new Motorcraft coil from AutoZone and it fixed my misfire.
Finished watching your video. Gotta say love to see a professional willing to help the diy'er. On the Denso coil I'd personally chose it over motorcraft ( even if they didnt contract it out to them). Seems to be what Toyota uses, and I've only replaced 2 on my wife's yota with 230k. Same goes with 02 sensor
Great info bud. Thank you....
I have watched several how to videos, but you are by far the best.. you give need to know info and don't waste time... good job sir..
Really? He was 3:30 into it before he started telling us anything and it was about coolant, not coil packs. HOW many minutes in do you need to go to get to the part that was what you were here for?
Great info to help with the 5.4 in my '07 F150. I didn't have any P0308 code until after heavy rain so I'm hopeful that is the reason I'm getting that code but if not your video is really going to come in handy in case I need to fix it!
I have a 2000 5.4 that was leaking from the crossover gasket on the thermostat side..thermostat bolts go through the intake and into the head(long bolt)..the coolant leak siezed one of the bolts and of course broke off in the head so i had to remove the intake.once removed about 3/8in of the bolt was sticking out. After pb blaster / free all and fresh vise grips i had to drill and tap but was able to avoid helicoil..has been about 4 years since with no problems but yesterday it started missing and thats why I'm here..long story short ford gaskets dont like coolant and a thermostat should always be easily serviceable...great video, great advice!
Thank you for helping me out with sparkplug issue i was having.. Now this was a great video (IN MY OPINION).. Have a great day.
Good video, I have the same problematic issues and recall seeing a bit of coolant on the left side up front and I wasn't sure where it was coming from now thanks to you're awesome video I know what to look for. Thank you kindly
THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION YOU GIVE US MR. RON
Great video, I got some random misfire codes last night and even a flashing check engine light. I have been chasing a coolant leak as well and this may be linked to each other, truck is a 98 F150 manual. Going out to trouble shoot now
5.4L 3-valve. Thank you. I think you just reminded me of what I forgot to do. I lost some fluid onto to top of my engine when I moved the crossover out of the way. Had to get the intake plenum out to swap out the temp sensor.
Ford assembly is done before the body is set on the chassis during assembly. All of the back of the engine is easy to access and assemble while there is no body or firewall, or floorboards, or kick plates, or toe board... no fenders, grill or hood.
That's why they're so hard to work on ex post facto, after the fact.
Thank you sir, we are very fortunate to have this video
Ron! Thanks for the video. I don't have issues with water down the hole, or leaks of coolant, but this information is great for guys troubleshhoting their possible causes of misfire. I have a misfire someplace, and it only activates sometimes when I'm stopped at a red light. I should get it scanned. Thanks for the Denso boot information. I will lean towards that if I replace one or more. THUMBS UP!!
You've got a fucking vacuum leakage or possibly a failing Brake cylinder booster.
Thank you for this video, I sucessfully removed and replaced the coils on my V10 Excursion, Many Thanks for your video.
You are exactly right I had to do that to my 2002 Ford F150 with the 5.4 I had to change the intake while I was there I went ahead and changed the plugs coil packs and went as far as changing the water pump didn't want to have to go back in and do that again thank you so much for your video very informative you're right on the mark
Ford has had the same issues with coolant running into the sparkplug wells for so many years. You'd think they'd listen to the customers and figure something else out. What a great engineering feat. Put a plastic intake on the top of a hot metal intake. I remember the first time I pulled a coil pack plug I thought I had a crack in the block!
😂 Now their using them to cover the bottom of oil pans. Come on Ford. People are paying top dollar for your vehicles. These are not places where they need to cheap out on.
Bro I'm going through the same thing right now 2008 town car my intake leaked into my spark plugs and now I replaced all spark plugs. Now I have to replace the intake to stop the leak and replace all coils
Ford is a corrupt and incompet company. All they care about it profit, even at the expense of customers.
Great video! I am having this problem now with my E 250.
Just posted about the e series. Keep an eye on your hood seal they tend to leak. We have a small fleet and I'm having to replace them all. Will cause similar issues water in plug insta miss
thank you Ron for this informative video.
Thank you sir for a great video and I'm going to check that on my 2005 Mustang GT now thanks again for the information
Great video! This is exactly what happened to my 2003 Expedition 5.4L. My coolant leak what due to a faulty heater valve. 👍🏼
i got one in the back yard with a stuck plug that wont budge had something leaked down in the hole now i cant get the damn plug out the bad part is is the last plug on the left and its hard to get a wrech too much crud the plug socket wont go down into the plug all the way im strugleing to get a grip on the plug
Exactly what you showed here was my problem, thank you for this very helpful video you saved me lots of money. 👍
Ron thanks for the helpful videos man!
Thank you for the very informative video! Having this issue on my 03 F-150 5.4.
Excellent detail and covers the entire spectrum of possible problems. Water is NOT good in the Coil Cavity!!! You saved me mucho denaro...thx
Ron, great video with very good information. big thumbs up.
Excellent!!! Thank you brother! I have 2007 Ford F-150.... In my case pressure washing was culprit. I like the have a clean motor, but sometimes that comes at a price! I usually blow off my engine, then run a fan on it for 24 hours before I even crank it, however I realize now that water won’t dry out of the spark plug ports. I always shoot blaster down the ports, and wait a few hours before removing my plugs. I heard it’s a nightmare if you break one off! Thanks again! I think I will just live with a dirty motor over causing myself these problems.
You're the man, great info !! FIXED.
I actually watched your video, and looked in or at the area where the Thermostat Housing, was located, and I didn't see any Anti Freeze?but there is a leak in that area, it must be a small leak, but never the less a leak, because there was Antifreeze that had leaked down into #5 Spark Plug port. And I only found that out after I removed all of the COP's,plus Spark Plugs,on the passenger side, and then I proceeded to the drivers side. And ,so,I removed the Air intake cleaner, and Duck, and then the first COP I removed was #5,and that's when I noticed moister, on the surface of the COP's Spark Plug Boot, and Antifreeze down in the Spark Plug port So thanks for your video, as that was my problem, and I will look closer tomorrow,to try to see where the Antifreeze is leaking from, but thanks again for you video. .
ford also have a known issue - they were designed with drain/weep holes in the windshield wipe cowl, area so in heavy rains or washing the vehicle without letting dry, water will drip down onto coils 4 and 8.
?
Yep, 6.8 v10 here and just had to do that to 2&3....blew it out and regreased boots checked coils with ohmeter and all good now.
@@gurban333 Really?? I'm misfiring 4 & 8!
@@gurban333 you are right friend
Very informative, I still drive a 2002 crew cab 5.4 and I replaced my my intake, wish I would known about this.
Thanks for the Denso coil pak info
Hey Ron your Ford knowledge is very well informed and beneficial to me you ll be definitely hearing from me
great explanation of a common problem
Really great informative video! Keep up the good work!
my problem exactly! Great video. 4.6 ford 2006
Thank you so much & May you receive your crown's in heaven for saving people &myself our first born from going to Dealership's again.Thank You so much.

GCanbiarla base donde ba la toma sel agua de una Ford del2009. Motor 5.4
I had the same problem luckily I caught it quick
Awesome video the P300 happened to me when I power washed my engine it started random misfire because water get in three coil packs.
Excellent video I learned a lot and you probably helped save me a lot of time
Really good videos. Thank you so much!
Bingo Ron, my 2009 F-150 4.6Lheater core outlet hose connector got cracked and was dripping on #4. Just as you said produced the #4 misfire. Thanks for the info I know its 3 1/2 years later, but this video helped me solve this.
Your welcome
Sounds. like why my number 8 is misfiring.I say that because ive seen crust and water in the plug area...
I have a 09 f150 as well
@@SandCarServices I have a number 4 cylinder misfire po304
Got a 4.6 pushinf white smoke out after accelerating from a stop sign. Had a loose spark plug in back left motor. These things are a pain😂
Was very helpful, saved some money, did it myself ...
Thank you for help and God bless
Good video and description Ron
Certainly very informative video. Thanks for sharing with your subscribers.
Dang I wish I had a mechanic like you
This guy is my mechanic he knows his shit and he is honest
Thanks Larry
Great video..thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Ron very helpful
In a LOT of the 4.6 and 5.4 engines, if you EVER throw a P0307 code, replace the coil pack ($50, ouch when often-repeated) and then within a month are replacing that same coil pack again, you BETTER be pulling your cam cover and checking all your followers too! 99% of the time, that 'can't find the miss' you keep patching with a new coil, is in fact, one of your intake cam followers has blown the bearings out, and excessive lash has allowed it to 'walk out' and lay in the oil galley...until it is chewed up enough to drop and destroy your valvetrain! If this happens, goodbye engine. Before that happens, if you find a cam follower off, TOSS IT (no guys, do not re-use it!!!) and replace the now-worn cam and ALL followers...the effort is WELL WORTH the effort!
So I just changed my thermostat and of course coolant did spill on to the engine. Now I have a misfiring issue. Now I know what to look for. Thank you so much for this video.
You are welcome
He’s a good teacher nice keep it up man
Happening to my truck now! Tyvm for the video
Great...Great Video .. Thanks for this Imformation.....
Thank you. Great information.
Hey Ron, just worked a security gig for Denso a few weeks ago. They're actually right down the street from you off of Adams Street over by Offroad Warehouse.
Yes, I know.
@@SandCarServices Mr Williams you are not even close to boring, You are the best i have watched yet! Very informative thank you so much,,,
Excellent video, thankyou !
Thanks Ron!
Changed my mind about buying one of these. Heard lots of bad news. I'll stick to my 1976 302.
Don't forget the hood to cowl seal that fails and allows water to drain on back plug Wells.
Great info!!! You may have added this on into your video didn't watch all the way through, didn't pertain to my hunt. Ford e series vans have a hood seal that over time breaks down and causes rain water to leak onto the engine, usually settles in one or multiple plug boots of the front (1‐2 5‐6) but with all the hoses could go in any. Figured I'd post because same general concept. Water in plug instant miss. And FYI seems ford may have programmed computer to disengage torque converter ( my experience with 98 model ) with engines skips which frys it and gets hella expensive.
Great info Ron, thanks for this. " engineers arent the brightest tools in the shed"...lmao!
Thanks for the information. Know what to look at on my 97 f-150. Have had #5 come up before.
Thank u a lot man I be sure to check this out on my 5.4
Great video Ron! Very informative. "Engineers aren't the BRIGHTEST tools in the shed..." I think they got the last laugh on that. Irregardless, the design is quite poor. Plastic intake! Brittle hose connections. Crossover gaskets underneath! The list is long on this one...
He probably said that knowing what most people know and that is that the industry is literally catered to engineering failures passed off as must have been the best choice because at some point it's going to support the industry like making it hard for you to do the job yourself or needing a special tool regardless. A good example would be in the industry Honda likes to put power steering lines right in your way of the belt tensioner so forget about putting a socket on there or getting any kind of wrench on there they could have lowered or raised this line up to 2in but no they put it right in our way so you have to literally buy a special crows foot type ranch or something I mean and those usually come in a set and not to mention it really makes the leverage thing really hard for you so I'm a 200 pound guy that can bench press 300 lb and even I took that sucker down to the shop because I didn't want to deal with it all because of a power steering line in my way when it could have been 2 in lower...
Sorry I had to say all that but I'm willing to believe even this guy knows what I'm talking about and even this guy was probably hinting at what I just said in a way because these Engineers are in fact brilliant that's what makes them so brilliant they know how to map this stuff out so the DIY guy gets pushed to the side for a minute and the industry is held up for just another minute...
I use a food grade grease called Petrol Jel. It is made for neoprene. We sold it where I used to work. Water pump empreller s and and thing that is neoprene. It will even stop a leaky faucet in your house if the little seals aren't broken. It softens neoprene and protects it. Awesome grease
Thanks! 2000 expedition here...have not seen coolant leak but number 5 keeps screwing up...
GReat video. Dead on in regards to ECM's inability to determine cylinder which is misfiring the most. On my 2000 5.4 2v 8 cyl the ECM is saying cylinder 9 and 10 are the bad actors.... Will start the process of replacing COP's tomorrow, I bought ENA's fr Amazon.
What a cool guy and good attitude. If I lived near his shop he'd be my mechanic
Thanks for the compliment
Great video!!!!!
On my V10, the driver’s side rear coil boot had coolant droplets on the outside. No puddling or anything like that. Looked like condensation. Wondering if I should just do the manifold gaskets while I am at it.
Ron, you might want to also mention to everyone that when tuning up engines, sometimes putting to much dielectric grease into the spark plug boots will also create a misfire condition. I fought an intermittent miss in my Escape only to figure out there was a lot of grease inside the boots. Once I removed and cleaned all the boots the problem was gone!
THIS is exactly why I NEVER put even the smallest amount of Dielectric grease on the Higher mileage engines, the computer reading is too sensitive.
thanks for this great video
Great video and very informative. I will check that tomorrow since I just recently pressure washed my engine (I hate a dirty motor) and then it started acting up.
Thank you for this
I have a 2007 F150 with a 4.6L SOHC V8 (2 valve) engine. Going on 150k miles on stock parts. Would l benefit from a high M340HV volume oil pump? What other upgrades/replacements do you recommend for my engine?
Always used mobile 1 synthetic oil every 5k miles.
I had a 03 f150 5.4 . Went 250k miles before i had to change one . I desided to change all of them .
Sold the truck at 275k . The other pwner still driving it .
Yes sir! Makes you stop and think about everything for a while
Well done sir !! i will check that out. Very nice!!
Great video... Thanks
Denso, blue streak standard ,hitachi and delphi are great choices, standard heavy duty makes the best boots then denso has decent spring boot combo which is the same as motorcraft since motocraft just boxes denso coils. Ive had good luck with all 4 brands i put them on the work trucks to see which one would give out first on these old engines. On my truck im trying standard heavy duty and they look pretty well made.
great video, thank you
Thank you!
THANK YOU!
Omg you are amazing dude!
Great video Sr.
Engineers may not be the brightest tools in the shed but they definitely are the sharpest tools in the shed. Lol
Solid video. You obviously know what your talking about because you use Cids & pids.
denso used to be nippodenso i have used these products for 40 years great 02 too
I have a 1998 f150 Triton. I was showing code po300 Which was random misfire I look this thing over really well and saw that a hose was dripping and antifreeze In the Spark plug holes and was causing the have faulty spark.
I have coolant in cylinder 8 covering my spark plug. could this also be a head gasket issue? I have a 1996 mercury Grand Marquis with the 4.6. i only have 2 coil packs
Hey Ron it was nice talking to you the other day . I was the one with the 427 Ford. I asked you why there was a idle circuit for the front carb on the 427 and you replied that having the idle circuit on the front balances out the engine for fuel delivery which I agree with . You stated that having only the center carb for the idle circuit will cause the engine to run lean on the forward banks. Here is my other question? I have a 65 GTO with the factory Tri power I have a 400 bored out .030 over 10.5 forged pistons 428 HO heads with a isky Cam 475 lift 292 duration and it only has the idle circuit on the center carb I have never had a lean condition on this engine even with the cam and 428 HO heads . The linkage is progressive. I do agree with what you are saying but I have also proved that is not true running only a center carb with the outer carbs with no idle circuit. On a progressive linkage I still don't understand why Ford put in a idle circuit on the front carb? If it was direct linkage and all carbs ran the same time yes you would need the idle circuit . Thanks for the videos very well done!
Okay think of it this way. The idle circuits themselves are not affected for the most part by the throttle plate. The idle circuits use a suction effect from vacuum below the throttle plate.
@@SandCarServices I totally agree with what you are saying in principle . All I am saying is the rest of the manufactures with multiple progressive carburetors there are no provisions for the idle circuits for the front and rear carbs and they run fine even with the performance build on my Pontiac 400 it has never had a lean condition with only one carb with the idle circuit, I think Ford might of been in a hurry to develop the 427 and put a standard Holley 4150 series with a idle circuit on this engine for the front carb when it wasn't needed. All my point is the rear carb is centered on the intake for the primary's the engine would run fine with just a idle circuit for one carb. Case in point the Chrysler 440 six pack Holley 2300 series and they ran the same set up on the Chev 427 and that was 435 HP that is more cubic inch than the 427 and they run fine with just one idle circuit Now if the carbs were not progressive the front carb would need the idle circuit . I totally agree with what you are saying and the principle but the idle circuit on my 427 for the front carb really isn't needed . I will have to get them balanced when I get the engine done . Thank you for your very informative videos they are very well done . Keep up the good work.! After seeing the hell you have been through I don't see a Ford 5.4 in my near future hahahahahah
2004 crown Vic #8 misfire I do have a leak around thermostat ,but I loosened the radiator cap has net leaked since ,but yes I do have a mid under load only sometimes
