    I think what makes Midir so good is the fact that it is literally a head on head dragon fight. With most dragon fights in Elden Ring, you're usually hacking at the toes and guessing when to dodge, especially the case with the lightning dragons, cause most of them never keep their heads down long enough to hit so you never actually feel the awe and excitement that should come from taking on a dragon(Placiudusax is the only exception imo) . If you notice, every attack Midir does leaves his head open for counter damage and all of his attacks feel realistic/readable in a way I've only ever seen in Monster Hunter. The camera also helps too, being zoomed out just enough to see this giant dragon's attacks(something that's an issue with big enemies in Elden Ring(Fire Giant, Dragons, etc) but nailed in Sekiro(Guardian Ape, Divine Dragon, etc)). Also, even though he's got a massive healthbar, you can cut it down quite a bit with the riposte, which once again encourages you to hit the head, and compared to bosses like Malenia and Fire Giant, he's honestly a lot less girthy in terms of health/length if you know what you're doing. Overall the boss serves as a prime example of how to do a dragon fight, make the head the focus of the fight, give all of his attacks a realistic readability, zoom the camera to identify these attacks, and give it the size and health of a dragon without feeling excessive or tedious. Also, do I even need to mention how good the presentation and music are in this fight. Midir is truly worthy of the title of a Dragon.

    • @abrahamrangel2326
      @abrahamrangel2326 Před rokem +37

      True, placidusax is like "midir at home" because they tried to make it similar with the gimmick of aiming for the head, but i found that annoying since the camera was horrible through the whole fight, i think the reason why midir is best dragon is because he has a short neck, sounds funny but this makes aiming for the head more readable

    • @xsubzerox3412
      @xsubzerox3412 Před rokem +24

      @Abraham Rangel youre not really ment to aim for the head with placidusax. You're never really given a chance to attack his head, unless your talking about fortisax which is a different dragon boss.
      I do wish they made fortissax fight like midir, as in stay in front and hit the head but it doesn't seem like it's designed that way which sucks, I thought they would reuse the idea from midir since it worked well camera wise. It really sucks because fortissax has way cooler moves than midir, major gripe being alot of midir attacks look basic as hell save for a few and phase 2 outside of the epic lazer move doesn't add much.
      Astel is actually the closest to midir, both keep there head down and have only one lock on point, their head, but tho astel has way better moves overall, still suffers midir's problem, not enough new moves during phase 2 save for the meteorite shower

      Midir is much easier because Placidusax has many moves where it's much harder to tell when you'll take damage so correct rolling is harder and there aren't many safe approaches while Midir's attacks are always consistent with dodge timings and even if you can't dodge, you can run away from basically all of his attacks because the indication of an attack always gives you time to run away.

Like we were really fighting a being worthy of being called the "perfect lifeform". Even battered and broken put up such a fight. Elden ring has taken boss AI and movesets to the next level but it lost that "personality" bosses use to have. Like midir, gael, twin princes, demon prince, etc. Black blade was close, but not quite there. Same with godfrey and radagon. Also just putting this out there Malina sucked. She wasn't hard, Just BS.

      @@dirt_dert_durt Well, I'll gladly present the evidence for you, then!
      (I've been researching the design evolution of Japanese adaptations of Western Fantasy for the last several years, so hopefully the following tl;dr makes for an interesting distillation of these two elements).
      The story in _Aliens_ is primarily about Ripley vs. the Queen, because they're both maternally protecting children against the other (James Cameron adapted his script for a different film called "Mother" to make _Aliens_ ). Even the original _Alien_ is about a lifeform that literally is born from the death of the human that darkness is implanted into and turns them into more of those monsters.
      That theme is why _Alien³_ has the Queen egg planted in Ripley's chest, and that whole film refers to the Xenomorph as "The Dragon" as well as why _Alien Resurrection_ focuses more on Ripley's horrible hybridization, in the same way that Miyazaki does with the relationships between Humans fusing themselves with or using Dragons throughout the _Souls_ series.
      The Caryll Rune "Beast's Embrace" in _Bloodborne_ is a depiction of a Facehugger, and the unused boss, "Great One Beast" utilizes the multiple teeth rows that Miyazaki started using with the Dragon God in _Demon's Souls_ along with Wolf features. That lupine element draws from the "Beast of Darkness" from _BERSERK_ like the "Watchdog of the Old Lords" boss as that's a central visual design theme for that inner darkness.
      Those fantasy-centric links to Dragons & Wolves are what we still see in the designs of the Ancient Dragons & Wolves of Radagon in _Elden Ring_ while the themes about parasitism and absorbing darkness within yourself that typically builds off of the _Alien_ series visual design are still present throughout (like the Albinaurics being artificial humans having white blood like the Synthetics).
      Suffice to say, those influences are VERY consistently utilized by Miyazaki throughout his games, but he's not alone as when _Aliens_ came out in 1986 it massively influenced the Japanese gaming industry with countless games having a Giger-like boss near the end as a final threat or secret boss, which is still used all over. It's that same darkness portrayed on a cosmic level, which is why _Bloodborne_ marries that symbolism to Lovecraftian elements.
      The underlying theme of absorbing darkness & pain into oneself causing a monstrous corruption that Miyazaki focuses on is why Midir matches the core theme of _Shin Godzilla._ In the scene that I mentioned this fight references at 1:41, the film's background music is a lament titled, "Who Will Know" which plays during the massive destruction of Tokyo.
      The lyrics convey the emotional darkness & existential pain that Godzilla experiences in his seemingly immortal existence, and why that is what escapes in the destruction of him just fighting to live. That theme was linked to the core of Japanese depiction of national suffering with Godzilla is now iconic. That matches to what Miyazaki is portraying with Midir and given that _Shin Godzilla_ was a critically acclaimed film in July 2016 when it released in Japan, and the "The Ringed City" DLC came out in March 2017, that's nearly impossible to overlook as directly tying those themes together, and being maintained with the Dragonlord in _Elden Ring_ with the attack called "Placidusax 's Ruin" following those same motions.
      So, those factors are why the fusion of the themes with the Xenomorph Queen from _Aliens_ and breath attack from _Shin Godzilla_ are central to the depiction of Darkeater Midir. The head design with hidden eyes and a huge crest is overtly to the silhouette of the Xenomorph Queen, especially with the spine-like protrusions. The conveyance of that inner pain being translated through the attack motions of Shin Godzilla, especially as that final attack is the one Godzilla makes in the film before being exhausted and falling to rest is how to translate those themes without the use of words.
      Midir was a descent of the Ancient Dragons tasked by the gods to eternal suffering as he's consuming and fighting back the darkness in exactly that type of inhuman pain that is a reflection of all the themes that Miyazaki's games are about, and how he's continued using and evolving those design motifs in his work.
      It's easy to see things that aren't there because just similarity of patterns doesn't mean that they are linked, as correlation ≠ causation. That's why I hope you'll appreciate that I wanted to emphasize that there is a veritable mountain of evidence that those references are things Miyazaki has used before & since, and my observation here was more than just speculative guesswork.

    Midir is probably the reason why I wasn't enjoying the dragon fights as much. I noticed early, that like Midir, they were getting more damage on the head compared to the rest of the body. So my impression was that the fight was supposed to be similar, with you waiting for the head and then strike. But the time the dragons leave their head down was so short that it was often not possible to get a hit in. And because the game also punished you for staying under them, I was a bit frustrated and just used Moonlight Greatsword (or whatever the name is this time) and sniped the heads with its ability. Took like 4-5 hits for the dream dragon. Now I know that dodging the lightning strikes isn't as difficult if you have the timing down, but I still feel that Midir's design was far more polished (well except for the fact that the camera is still a problem when you stay locked on).
