Single Americans tend to go on dates with different potential partners; it’s to gauge how compatible they are. Once we pick the most compatible partner (and if the partner feels the same way), then the relationship becomes official (dating). At this point, the couple decides whether to have an exclusive or open relationship (a majority of American romantic relationships are exclusive by default). Tl;dr: Going on a date does not mean that the two people are dating. It’s to see whether you’re compatible as a couple.
Keep it up. I speak english fluently now. No disrespect but english is sometimes limited to express deep thoughts. French may make you think a different (more sofisticated?)way if you keep on doing. See the scifi movie "arrivals" . it shows how a langage can have a huge influence on the way your mind behaves. Sorry for the bad spelling
I'm french but I understand the difference between having a date and being in a relationship. It's not necessarily weird. A date is not a commitment, it's a way of knowing the other person better. It's flirting. I'm sorry but even in Europe some people flirt with several people in the same time. To find the best match.

I honestly thought this whole ‘exclusive’ thing only happened in movies. Like that’s super weird, why would you date several people at once? Or like be together for months and still not consider it a relationship? I don’t get it? Nobody here does that. (Belgium)
Charlotte SPN you’re not dating serval people at once, Going on dates or Rendez Vous isn’t dating. You try to find the one, and when there is a connection you’ll stop going on dates, and focus on one person. how is it in Belgium?
I speak as a french woman, because i think belgian and french have a kinda similar philosophy when it comes to dating. I would consider it rude and hurting if the man i met on several dates , let's say for 2 or 3 weeks, at the theatre, restaurant.... was having the same relation with another partner, at the same time. For a french person, discovering that the other one is going on dates with someone else is for most people a big no no, as it shows a lack of commitment and appears as untrustworthy....
Derran Lawston well I guess we also don’t really have a ‘date’ culture? Less people actually go on dates with people they don’t know. It is changing a bit with the internet, but still. And let’s say a guy asks me out, then I would not, say, go out with another guy a few days later. That’s just considered rude I think.
These couples are all French men with American women. What about the other way around? Je suis américain et ma chérie est française. On est exclusivement ensemble depuis 2017. I don’t think we would’ve answered these questions too differently except for that she would much rather come to the US rather than me go to live in France. Nice video, though!
The couple where the girl is with a red coat and the man speaks at a low volume they seem more like exes than a couple lol. The tension was so high especially coming from the boyfriend; he had that "She doesn’t care about anything and I’m sick of it and her actions" attitude, you can feel a kind of "justified" resentment from him for her. I’m a bit amazed none noticed it in the main comments.
i just thought he was uncorfortable being on camera and maybe he had that slightly uptigh upbringing from some kind of "aristochratic"(ish)social class i mean he is wearing his shirt Monk style and she's casual.
My mom and dad are an example of a French-American couple. My mom is from France and she came to America in an exchange program when she was 17 during the summer. The people who had her stay at their house was very close friends with my dads parents so sometimes he would come around. At first my dad didn’t really talk to me mom but then something happened and he asked my mom out on a date. They started dating and then got married years later. While my dad never learned French (not that he didn’t BOTHER doing it he just wasn’t good at picking up languages so he gave up) my mom made it her mission to teach me and my siblings French. Out of all my siblings, I’m the most fluent in French but I’m definitely not perfect because I was only ever taught from hearing French and I never really saw the words on paper. That’s why in high school I’m taking French to improve my grammar so when i visit my family in France i have the best conversations with them! (Lowkey tho I want a European boyfriend... preferably French, Italian, or a Russian language but I’m not picky they all sound sexy 😂)

So, there are many Americans (I am one) that don't date more than one person at a time. Maybe I"m old fashioned this way, but I believe you can have interest in more than one, but when you start dating, that's the only person you're actively seeing that way.
The way these couples met is so romantic, I feel like nowadays the only way to meet and date someone is through the dating apps and that’s just sad… nothing tops a real, not planned encounter !
im french/native american but like i grew up in the us and my mom is french and the things she taught me rly made me feel like so weird because in america the dating is different like you can be talking to multiple people at once but in french culture it is not like that. also meeting someones family is so weird because im used to the double kiss.. however many people here are mexican and they also have that type of greeting (when i met my bfs family it was like that and it was really familiar to me so i was actually happy about it). idk i know i am american too but a lot of americans are just so weird culturally.
6 month couple had awkward little bickers, 10 year couple seems to have dissatisfactions cause woman won't learn french and seems adamant in not living in france, and 3 year couple seems like they'll live the rest of their lives together.
That's so sweet! I hope I can find myself a nice "American Boy" (as in the song). I a bit concerned about the "dating other people" thing though, since I just heard about it! But I guess I should at least get to the US before thinking about that.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 Not all at the same time, at least I didn’t and most people I knew didn’t, but there was always one slime ball. Besides, I just thought that was odd coming from French people when they are the ones known for having mistresses and lovers while they were married.
That’s why I like french dating culture if you date you date one person at a time no questions asked. I hope American dating culture won’t be passed onto French culture.
Don't assume every American is "dating around". As an American, I think there are many of us who take partnerships seriously and don't graze the fields to see everything that's available at once. The people who do that are probably using dating apps like Tinder and are very noncommittal/just in it for sex. I certainly think that it sometimes takes a few weeks/months for things to get serious, but I think there's also people who move quickly because there's a clear connection. Everyone's different, I suppose.
i am not french i am georgian and i am dating an american guy :) and the georgiqa i am from is not the state of america but a country on the border of asia and europe.
I saw pictures of the mountain side of Géorgie, it was beautiful and romantic. It reminds me of Disney Movies with tiny houses and plains. I'm saving to move to Monténégro, it has the same vibe but also a super hot sea.
I think there might be a misunderstanding in the comments. "Dating" multiple people doesn't mean sleeping with multiple people, it's just being invited for a night out and hanging out, but I don't think that means physical contact or anything.
Can someone explain french dating culture? from this video I get that they date one person at a time to see if compatible and then become exclusie or they dont. Or does dating mean they go straight to relationship? What do they call the getting to know someone phase?? I didn''t even know this was different elsewhere!!
When 2 people start dating, even before the first kiss it's exclusive. But it becomes "serious" when it's official, meaning when they announce it to family and friends that aren't to close or didn't follow the beginning of their story. But the younger generations are doing things more and more like american even if it's still "rare" : they have to say it's not exclusive, it's not assumed.
I've never heard the non-exclusive relationship thing being considered normal in American culture. In fact, things like polyamory are pretty looked down upon and considered illegal by the law (marriage wise). Most people will end up being monogamous. So I don't know if they meant dating multiple people at once, or if they just meant people date alot of people before settling down with just one. But America has alot of religious communities of all types, and in most of them it's very taboo to date more than one.
@@abbiphillis1405 I'm going to be starting in the Spring though instead of the fall. Do you think it will hard to meet people and go to parties by then because everyone will have already made cliques or will the social environment there still be pretty open and easy to fit into?
If one of these girls does not make the effort to learn a word of French, the relationship is kinda toxic When you get in a relationship with someone who speaks another language, it's very disrespectful not to learn that language
I had this french guy drive an hour to see me (I speak French also-Je parles français aussi) we had good convos in French. He was picky, like where to put shoes, he didn’t like animals (j’ai une chat) he’d make a weird popping sound with his mouth when he didn’t like something. He also showed up high af and laid in my bed saying he didn’t want to “baise” but other things. It was like the weirdest thing ever. Like I love the language and culture but I’d need someone more chill. The guy was a retired Olympian for cross country skiing hahaha so maybe that added to the attitude.
Hi! I'm catalan, so my country, which is Catalonia shares a border with France, and not just that, you can consider the line a bit blurry, cause of Occitania, that area is known as Southtern-France, Northern-Catalonia, French-Catalonia... In fact, there's even a catalan town called Llívia surrounded by France. Anyway, what I mean by that is that I know and share some french culture, so I understand why Dominic's got surprised when he told them that Lisa doesn't eat cheese, basically because I love cheese so much and it's a big part of my catalan-medterrian gastronomy, so I can understand the reason although I can also understand why she doesn't, just a bit though, I love cheese too much😅. Oh! About the double kiss, I thought that which french people was triple, or at least in my french family, my father has some cousins in Montpelier, and I always struggle with the triple kiss, I always go for the double and I don't remember about the third one until the very last second.😅
Judith N Hi! I’m french leaving near the Pyrénées (so like 1hour away from Spain) and for the number of kiss it depends on the area where you live ! Mostly it’s 2 kisses but in Montpellier it is 3, in South-West it’s also 2 and I heard that some people even do 4 !
Isn't it obvious to be exclusif if you start seeing someone in the hopes of starting a relationship...? (🇲🇫) it is obvious here, if I start dating someone he's a cheater if he goes on a date with someone else, I mean why tf you think I'm going on a date with you?
I think what they mean is at the very beginning. I think when the relationship gets sexual, there is an understanding that it should be exclusive. But some couples (I don't) take weeks or months to get to that stage.
How long have you known this theoretical man before you went on a date with him? Your idea of dating may be more romantic than others, here friends and sisters can go on a “date”. Its just two people meeting for food/movie, you arent particularly romantic yet. But you would never pursue a relationship with multiple people
That is not true about American dating. Many of us date exclusively and have little to no interest in dating several people casually at one time. Perhaps it depends what region you're from.
Everyone’s wondering if Americans date a lot of people at once. Once we are in a committed relationship we don’t do that unless that person is a cheater but we do talk to multiple people because we have this thing called the “talking stage” but that’s mostly for american teens. But we have “hoes” idk how to explain it loll but it’s what we teens have. It’s like extra people we talk to before we commit to one person. We’re not like the French where y’all go on on date and already dating or a French guy will tell you he loves you in like the first week. Americans can do everything but until they both agree to being each other’s boyfriend/girlfriend we are just talking

French may make you think a different (more sofisticated?)way if you keep on doing. See the scifi movie "arrivals" . it shows how a langage can have a huge influence on the way your mind behaves.
Sorry for the bad spelling
The older couple was super cute
I'm french but I understand the difference between having a date and being in a relationship. It's not necessarily weird. A date is not a commitment, it's a way of knowing the other person better. It's flirting.
I'm sorry but even in Europe some people flirt with several people in the same time. To find the best match.

Not in France. Frenchmen are usually more romantic.
So...not one american in this video learned the language of their better-half enough to try to know them better? Sad....
Living Slingshot they live in New York, and they’re probably always busy with work and school to have enough time to learn a language. You don’t know their situation
@@derranlawston4052 The third couple was together for 10 years. Also, I never wrote that the fact they didn't learn French was wrong, I just said it was sad.
How do you know if the woman from the 10 year relationship does or doesn’t know french?? 😂 et oui, si elle parle pas le français c’est triste, chuis américain et si j’ai un copine (boyfriend ??) je parlerai français avec lui, communication is important
@@derranlawston4052 Well, she said before meeting her partner she didn't know anything about french culture and when they are asked wether language barrier is a problem the guy tells her "it would be easier for you to speak french". I agree this is not very explicit as to say if she does speak french or not, but I'm more inclined to think she does not due to the question they are answering to.
Ps : je suis pas sûr que tu parles d'avoir un copain (boyfriend, in wich case to say "him" you do say "lui") ou une copine (girlfriend, so "elle" to say "her"

@@amelieml does that mean Europeans are more committed compared to Americans when in dates ?

So, there are many Americans (I am one) that don't date more than one person at a time. Maybe I"m old fashioned this way, but I believe you can have interest in more than one, but when you start dating, that's the only person you're actively seeing that way.
I m 30 years in a French-American relationship . I know it all ;-)
The way these couples met is so romantic, I feel like nowadays the only way to meet and date someone is through the dating apps and that’s just sad… nothing tops a real, not planned encounter !
im french/native american but like i grew up in the us and my mom is french and the things she taught me rly made me feel like so weird because in america the dating is different like you can be talking to multiple people at once but in french culture it is not like that. also meeting someones family is so weird because im used to the double kiss.. however many people here are mexican and they also have that type of greeting (when i met my bfs family it was like that and it was really familiar to me so i was actually happy about it). idk i know i am american too but a lot of americans are just so weird culturally.

I'm surprised how good their American accents are. I wouldn't have known they are French without context (at based on what little they said).

I think there might be a misunderstanding in the comments. "Dating" multiple people doesn't mean sleeping with multiple people, it's just being invited for a night out and hanging out, but I don't think that means physical contact or anything.
Depends on the couple.
Cute. Trop mignonnns.
I think what they mean is that they date plenty of people in the very initial stages of the relationship.
I'm going to Miami University of Ohio next year where Carly and Bruno met.
T WE congrats! I go there now and I love it
@@abbiphillis1405 I'm going to be starting in the Spring though instead of the fall. Do you think it will hard to meet people and go to parties by then because everyone will have already made cliques or will the social environment there still be pretty open and easy to fit into?

God. Thank you.
Cute!
