-38° COLDEST NIGHT in a FROZEN HOT TENT. ICY and ALONE.

- It gets down to -38 on this trip to the frozen remote off-grid camp. That is as cold as it has ever been for me while camping. While some people out there have experienced much colder winter conditions - including me - what makes this experience unique is that I'm doing this with nothing more than a canvas tent and a stove.
Canvas tents are great in the cold and I love mine, but there is no insulation. So when that stove goes out, the temps plummet right away. In fact, it's colder inside my tent than outside when I arrive.
I have a few things I need to do around camp. I'm cracking out a handmade wood splitter; it's awesome.
I am also modifying my bogan and cooking lamb on the flaming stove in the tent.
And ... I'm hoping my Jackery can heat up my snowmobile in these freezing conditions.

How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the CZcams training (watching) over the years. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Just found your channel. Great stuff man. When I was 26 years old (I am almost 58 now), I backpacked almost from coast to coast in Canada (Ontario to BC) for a year and a half. I went to Yukon in autumn and it was gorgeous but freezing cold at night, so my respects to you for enjoying being there at -40C. Greetings from a bit warmer place on earth (the Yucatan Peninsula), jeje. Cheers!
I so miss this kind of adventure. When your birthday start with the numbers 6, or seven, or eight, the cold is just prohibitive.
All the same, it is a joy to live vicariously through you.
I live in a small off grid cabin, built during 2021. This is my first winter off grid, learning a lot. Nice to see how others are faring.. I wish I had a snowmobile to help gather firewood!

I get such a kick out of you getting such a kick out of making splits. It is a handy little tool. You looked nice and cozy in your tent and the food looked awesome. I was very envious of your time and nature. Not only does it get dark like you say, but it is quiet...so quiet.

@@jaylegere Run your instant pot off the Jackery. Saves having to cook using propane and wood. Off of just a 60 W solar panel you can run the instant pot for everything including coffee 365. In instant pot mini has an operational wattage of 70-110 watts.

It is such a beautiful place. I was amazed at the stars and aurora visible at night. I'm in Korea. Winter is cold, but it doesn't snow much. Life is wonderful in so much snow.
You probably got this advice earlier, but an old car-tire screwed onto your chopping block prevents your axe from going to far and it also cushions the blow if you miss your target. I would also raise the height of the chopping block. The surface you place the wood on should be the same height as your fist if you let the arm hang down your side(A bit below the thigh).
That sled starting up is the most satisfying sound I've heard all week.
That crisp sound snow makes when it's that cold is awesome.
Hey Jay. Today was the first time I charged my Jackery with a generic 100W solar panel. It was the first day in a while we had sunshine, so I thought I would give it a try. It was way faster then I thought it would be, so consider recharging your Jackery daily as required. Solar Panel was inexpensive and so was the generic hook up.
Hi Debbie! I have the solar charger. Unfortunately the sun is way behind the trees this time of year and the temps are crazy cold. I'd have to take it way out on the lake for the panels to get sun. The battery would be exposed to extreme cold and snow and I worry it would not be good.

Jay, I spent 34 years in Fairbanks, with quite a few where I was dealing with cold snow machines like you. May I suggest a cover along with your plug-in heater (we didn’t have those). That cover will help hold in any heat and we know anything you can do to warm that engine block along with the oil will reduce engine wear from start ups with COLD oil which we know doesn’t lube very well. Good luck buddy….love your spirit and videos.

Wow I Love the kindle splitting tool, what a great idea. The crunching of the snow while your walking tells the tail on how cold it is, at nearly negative 40 is bone chilling but I bet the camp felt amazing after being outside. I’m surprised you didn’t go to the other site and try the Russian Bear tent and start a fire to see how it heated up at these temperatures. Thanks for taking us along.

Everything always taste so darn good when your out like that. My uncle and his family are from the city and are not really used to the out doors. I remember when we got them up into the cold and snow to go snowmobiling. We had stopped at a camp that had been left open for people to use , we cooked up some hot dogs and a couple of them fell on the floor and most all of them were kind of blacked and cracked open. A few weeks later my uncle was saying what a awesome time they all had and then commented on the food. He said that he had never had anything that tasted some gosh darn good! He then said that had he been any where else and his food was blackened and had fell on the floor that he never would have eaten it.. Thumbs UP to you , stay warm !
I Love your set up. The splitter is ingenious for small wood. Maybe some felt glued on inside of triangle and bottom will deaden the clang. I never camped that cold but nearly fell asleep in an arctic snowmobile suit I tested in 40 below.

Not sure how easy it is to do for you, but you could always bring the snowmobile battery into the warm for some extra cranking amps in the morning.

Jay, have you thought about building up some thermal mass in or around your store to help keep it warmer longer? In one of your earlier videos you mentioned about the draft coming under your half door/lookout perch, install a door sweep! Yes, I realize it’s hot tenting and camping. But still make it a little more comfortable. Cheers

Jay, you are one heck of an inspiration, and comfort, in that it is possible to live outdoors in the North (45° Latitudes) in a tent. I am looking for a bit of land to pitch my tent on. Might be a bit cold on these old bones.
Consider adhering some foam to inside of that splitter to save your hearing...what ju say? Happy New Year. Best

Coldest I've been camping as a kid was -45c (when we left home with the snowmobiles), we had to partition the tent to make it smaller and heat up faster, as night was falling and it was about to get even colder. That night my uncle was lighting the gas lantern and the gas jumped into the tank. (I was 8,don't remember how that happened) My dad grabbed the can to throw it outside, but the floor caught on fire. So I took my sleeping bag, killed the fire and ran outside to puke lol 40mins away from home , you can't let the tent burn. I still loved camping, it's just part of the game lol
Julie that was bad ass to save the tent by sacrificing your bag.
Things like that or a major reason why I really like zip together sleeping bags if you had two of those three people could sleep in two bags and stay warm I've done that with three of my kids and two bags and we're all perfectly warm and I was able to sleep diagonally have all the room in the world never touched one of the kids. we all slept like logs.
You know, Julie, you remind me of camping in the Rockies at 30 below zero and twice I heard someone say "This is the Best time to go camping because the ice crystals in the air look like billions of diamonds!!!"

As a suggestion Jay, be careful with wood stove when loading wood wearing gloves that are not leather. Nylon will melt to your hand or catch fire. 😎
When I did some year-round camping with the Boy Scouts, in the winter, the cooler became the warmer. Any food we wanted to prevent from freezing went in there , along with a bottle of hot water with an extra pair of stockings layered over it so it gave off heat more slowly, but for a longer period of time. I like your new splitter - it's easy to use and it's safer. Safety is important when you are out there alone and you're not sure if the snowmobile is going to start up and be available for an emergency trip back to civilization.

@@gregoryeverson741 I tended to get acclimated a bit to the cold temperatures experienced on those winter campouts. I felt uncomfortable warm for the next couple days after I returned to civilization. I experienced the same thing when I went on "Cold Trips" as part of my job. After spending a week in Thompson, Manitoba, it seemed that I hardly needed more than a sweater when I came back to Michigan.

Thanks for the video Jay! I agree that my Jackery is awesome. I mostly got it to power my C-PAP but there was one major problem. My wife expropriated it !!! I'd never have guessed she would covet my power station. I solved the problem by getting her another one for Christmas. Happy New Year & stay warm out there !

Jay, once again you put out a great video. The squeaky snow sounds and that bone chilling cold hanging in the air brings back great winter memories for me. Even though I don't live far from my childhood home, the winters have warmed up dramatically (we only have a skiff of snow on the ground), so thanks for your making your videos!
Great splitter but I think it might be prudent to put a hard cover on the upright splitter blade, to protect you if you slipped or tripped onto it. It would likely leave a nasty gash! Take care and enjoy your special spot.
Jay, another awesome video! Those Firestarters are the ones that I use at my camp. Love them! Been using them for years now. That logspliter is great eh? I just got one a couple months ago on Amazon that makes splitting kindling much easier. Great food at the camp! The best!

You need to get a Tilley Lamp and 20 :try of Paraffin to light your tent they give off a very nice soft light and also some heat very reliable as long as you have a couple of spare Mantles, Love the video’s, P.S. have a great 2022 👍
Plastic and freezing temperatures are not a great combo. Just a thought but using wooden bracket plates on the bottom of the toboggan runners will take some strain off the plastic in those extreme temperatures. You can accomplish that by knotting both top and bottom of each rope hole. You may also use wood on both sides for even extra strength and less strain on the plastic.

Easy way to quiet the splitter up is to take something like a pillow or even a blanket of some sort to dampen the ringing. It's like the difference between tapping a bell with a stick and holding onto the rim while tapping it.
Also insulation works both ways, that is why your tend was colder inside than out!
Also have you ever thought of adding a firebox gasket to the top part of your stove so it makes a better seal?

I was thinking something similar... siliconing some dense foam (like a yoga mat) on the inside of it, might help.

you might consider bringing a simple cover for your snowmobile. might keep it from cooling off too fast and keep that frost (and snow) off making it slightly easier to start each time.
Does your snowmobile have a block heater? Having a block heater and electric power is huge. The wood splitter is very clever. Happy New Year Jay .

Just off hand, what's stopping you from adding some foam insulation to your walls and closing them with plywood? besides the cost of the plywood.
It would make it too permanent. This is not a permanent camp and I need to keep it that way
@@jaylegere You could get some sheets of rockwool and use some netting to keep it against the walls and roof of the tent. That would not be permanent, but the insulating effect would be huge. Rockwool is also non-flammable and it doesn't loose much insulating quality even if it gets wet.
What are your thoughts on taking a file to it to sharpen it a bit? The sharper the edge may dampen the sound since the energy would be released in to the wood faster than the metal. Also may produce fewer hits to split it.
Would also need some kind of a cover, if someone fell onto it it could be deadly.

A cover would be great but also bolting it to a small stump would help to take some ring out of it

Right on Jay love it. Many decades ago we used to fish sturgeon on the Columbia River in the Columbia Gorge in the winter and have had fires galore with cooking etc and felt so free it was great ! Still is lol when you go for the Fun lol

I was a kid in the 70's. My grandmother made me a fried beef bologna sandwich with a tad of cheddar cheese. I fell in love with it ever since. Our 17 acre farm had a wood coal furnace. You opened the bottom grate and put the bar on and shook it to get out the ashes. Closed that up and opened up the top and you could load it up with wood and/or coal. We were very poor but in the winter, we were always warm. We had an old tv that stood up and had bulbs in the back of it. If your tv went on the fritz, we numbered the bulbs and took them in town to test them and got a new replacement for anyone of them that was bad. We had rabbit ears for a tv antenna and at least got to watch "chiller theater" on friday and saturday nights.
The cold can be fun but it can also be very deadly. It's not hard to freeze to death if you aren't prepared.

A little piece of scrap rubber shoved on the under side of the wedge where it comes to a point will deaden that ring when using it, I bet. Nice idea.
