Penn Jillette on Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, And Why He's All in on Gary Johnson

  • "How do you think I'm going to die?" asks Penn Jillette, "the larger and louder half" of Penn & Teller, at the start of 'Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales', a book that is every bit as mesmerizing and captivating as the duo's live show.
In fact, Presto! reveals the greatest disappearing act of Penn's 40-plus-year career. Not "The Vanishing African Spotted Pygmy Elephant Act," in which make the duo make a cow dressed like an elephant go poof. This is the trick by which the 61-year-old, who once topped the scales at over 300 pounds, lost one-third of his body weight in a five-month span.
Penn details his diet regimen as laid out by Ray Cronise, a former NASA scientist and entrepreneur who pushes an extremely restricted plant-based diet (essentially, veganism but with little-to-no added salt, sugar, oil, and fat). Like Penn's old "fat fuck" body (his term), Presto! contains multitudes-it's less a diet memoir than a wide-ranging meditation on contemporary American culture and politics, including the 2016 election.
It's also Penn at his very best. Even as he is discussing the life-threatening health conditions that led him to his new eating plan, he's never a page or two away from commenting on how Hillary Clinton is the absolute worst nominee for president...except for Donald Trump, with whom Penn appeared for two seasons on Celebrity Apprentice. "Eating pizza is voting for Hillary," Penn writes (he means that as an insult), while Donald Trump's hair resembles "cotton candy made from piss" (the billionaire's personality is even more off-putting, says Penn). Presto! is filled with anecdotes not just about weight loss but about the loss of loved ones, hosannas to the friends and artists who have inspired Penn over the years, and a tender-yet-barbed condemnation of what he calls "the Standard American Diet," or SAD.
Reason's Nick Gillespie recently sat down with Penn Jillette backstage at Vegas' Rio casino, where Penn & Teller have been in residence for years. The conversation ranged from the 2016 election to what it's like to eat only potatoes for two weeks straight to why Bob Dylan-"he's a freak, not a cheerleader"-is Penn's artistic hero.
    About 45 minutes.

He is respectful and intelligent and he nailed the bit about how Trump and how, while so many love him for his lack of filter, you CANNOT have someone in office running millions of people within a country without a filter and being the better person who bites their tongue and takes the higher ground.
We see how, when Penn chose not to support Trump, he sent out a Tweet trashing him (and he was respectful on the reply, higher ground...well done).

Jillette is being too narrowly focused when it comes to the damaging impact of Citizens United and the more generally pernicious influence of money in politics. Sure, in this election cycle, upstart candidates like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump bucked the trend, but they are just two very high-profile exceptions to the rule; both of whom, it's important to note, benefited tremendously from a lot of free media exposure. However, when you look at down ballot races where media exposure is much harder to come by and grassroots fundraising is limited, this is where the influence of big money really comes into play and where elections (and candidates) can essentially be bought.

Not sure how this is relevant. Nevertheless, the natural heating and warming of the earth is in fact classified as climate change, and it has been shown many times overwhelmingly that the earth has experienced an extreme amount of heating since the industrial revolution.

Point still remains, people who are smart and also have those ugly characteristics penetrate American politics. Fact is, the amount of closet-digging that goes on by the media is enough to prevent any rational, smart person from wanting anything to do with American politics. I'd be happy to run for president, but it wouldn't take long for the press to uncover my LSD and pot-addled 20's and my two previous marriages and crucify me over all those things. @Fred -- Your appeal to authority is a logical fallacy. It is not an argument. Also, Greenspan was wrong in two ways: 1) He said he thought the banks would not act against their own best interests and thus not give loans to people who could not pay them back, but he was wrong in that retrospective because the banks did act in their best interests because the government made giving subprime loans in their best interests. 2) The free market is self regulating; whereas, the banks are not a free market, nor is America a free market. The American system is cronyism, which is the inevitable consequence of big government, such as the kind of government that regulates. Regulation is exactly what they want. If they can get you to demand regulation, then you have been played.

Sorry to break it to you guys and bring up your worries again, but that's a loophole that essentially makes the President as the sole decision maker. If he really wants to do it, and the Sec of Def. says no, he can simply dismiss that Sec. and appoint a new one who will give him the consent. Only the President has the nuclear codes btw.

I would have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Jillette on several issues. The basic one is his generalization regarding former President Nixon being universally disliked. Some of us that had direct contact with him and worked for him held him in high regard. He had no reason to lie to us or to be disingenuous with us but he showed us genuine concern about who we were and what we thought. Whereas Bill Clinton had nothing but disdain for his "inferiors" and Hillary was worse. Further, his experiences with Donald Trump caused him to feel that Donald was unready for the job. It appears to me that he prefers educated liars, devious politicians and persons of little depth of character to be his leaders. I prefer real people that may lack a mental filter that allows others (with that "filter") to lie about what they would do.

i get that most people aren't that educated and make little attempt to educate themselves on political issues. i myself am guilty of it, tho not so much from being lazy as just being fed up with the games as well as a good chunk of my depression in my late highschool years being attributed to my frustration with the state of politics. I get it too. in this age where the truth is being smothered by misinformation being spread by both the media and the internet itself, finding the truth is becoming more and more daunting a task. In this age sensationalism sells and is what people want the world to be like. I don't think people are really THAT stupid, but rather everybody is angry and that WANT to be angry, to the point we can't have reasonable conversations anymore or discuss rational answers to our so called "problems". I see Donald Trump as someone who doesn't see that as a bad thing, but rather an opportunity to slide someone very unqualified into a position of power. Like he thinks being president means you'll be the most popular person ever. Someone like that will say whatever they can to get there, with no concern for the consequences of what they're stirring up. Like I said I know people are mad, but I just don't get how they can be that mad that they'll believe him. Politics these days is a sideshow I don't approve of in the least, but Trump is a player some how standing his own in a game he doesn't know how to play.
      sorry for the long comment.

Let me give you my quick analysis on Trump upon further studying this election cycle.
If you examine his mannerism in speech and gestures you'll see patterns of both positive and negative reinforcements. His neuro-linguistic programming cues suggests mastery in persuasion and negotiation while his self-planted controversies suggest the mark of forethought and "bigger picture" planning ("Hey there goes MY african-american"). Essentially, he baits the media with nuggets of prose that could easily be misconstrued or slandered. The media bites EVERY SINGLE TIME. This in turn refreshes the media cycle and draws focus on himself granting him several tens of thousands dollars worth of advertisement at a time.
If that isn't enough to convince you that he has an idea of what he is doing turn your attention to the amount of money he has spent funding his campaign and compare it to Hillary or even better Bernie. Then calculate how many votes he garnered during the Primaries in contrast to the other 2 candidates and divide that by the amount of money they spent. Tally it up and you get $13.97: $17.77: $4 per vote, Hillary: Bernie: Trump respectively.
Economically, the better choice is Trump. Geopolitically, the better choice is Hillary because she possesses the psychopathic qualities to destabilize powers in the middle east that don't abide to the petrodollar. At this point in time with America's federal debt, food stamps, student loans, money printing, health care costs at an all time high and labor force participation, median family income, home ownership diminishing we don't need any more interventionist spending. Take what you will from this.

Let's see Obama talk to me about average case analysis in algorithms....or diffie hellman...or Fermat's theorems...or basically any other math/computer science topic... I don't really think Obama is as smart as you think he is. He's definitely smart, but if all presidents were Buckeroo Bonzai, then we'd not have a need for DARPA, NASA, NSA, Naval Research Labs, Carnegie Mellon, MIT....the list goes on. There are plenty of people smarter than the president, trust me. I might call him "cunning" and "clever" though.

Well, I was tempted to compliment Matt and Penn on what I thought was one of the best Reason Interviews I've ever seen, and...
    Well, it was.
I do disagree with Penn's comments about 'which president is/was "smarter," ' but I think that's a misuse of the word 'smarter,' as the use of 'clever' to describe a horse. Today, imnsho, virtually all politicians are there for glory, money and The Power To Control Other People, and little else. "Follow the money" is just SO 20th Century. It's Follow The Power (over others) today.

Tom Schwarz This election is not about breaking the 2 party system yet. It's about nationalism(Trump) Vs Globalism(Hillary(Killary. Sorry, I had too:P)). So in terms of pragmatism it really is a vote between Trump and Hillary so a vote anywhere else only raises the chances of a congress vote. It would be better for all concerned, just like with my Brexit, if it is a majority win for either camp and 3rd party votes work against that.

When I first started juggling and doing magic, my mom told me that people were looking at my hands so I should make sure my fingernails looked nice. In order to mock her, I put nail polish on my left ring finger (my nicest finger). It was just to make fun of mom. She was disgusted and said “Oh Penn!” It turned into a tribute to my mom. She died in 2000, so it seems unlikely you’ll ever see me without it. The pinky ring on my right hand was my dad’s and the nail polish on my left hand is a joke with my mom. The bit about presidential intelligence seems off to me, Obama most certainly wasn't smart in the way he is saying, he had smart people feeding him information and writing his speeches, but as soon as he had to go without those assists, he dithered more than spoke, and what he had to say was more filler or fluff until he could get back onto what he had prepared for or until his auto cue was working again. Same goes for the likes of Bush and Clinton. The main requirement for a president is to be a showman who can gather competent people and delegate the work to ensure the smooth running of the country. The difference between Trump and the likes of Obama, Clinton, Bush etc, is he is not a career politician, he would rather wing it when he isn't on autocue or being fed info and not sputter buzz words and um and ah until he could get back on the rails, he would rather speak his mind which is a big no no in politics.
