- In this video I show start to finish how I make my custom outdoor MDO plywood signs. I use 1/2" MDO 95% of the time, cut the pattern with my Q54 vinyl cutter, trace the pattern and cut it with a jig saw. The edges are primed and sanded and primed again if needed, then painted with 1 Shot lettering enamel. Once the paint is dry I cut the Oracal 751 cast vinyl and apply it to the sign. The whole process takes about 7 days or so with the paint drying and the touch-ups. Enjoy!
Thank you for your detailed tutorial. I am getting started and have been looking for guides--you are the best. The way you stop and explain little details of your technique as you go and also that you hit on the basics all along is exactly what I need. I am enjoying your videos and learning a ton. I watched this one to actually make my first sign--I've got the materials, now it's time to jump in and get going.
Glad I could help! If you have any questions I might be able to help with let me know.
Have you ever made a router jig with the CNC and the routered the sign shape? Love your content, no nonsense and detailed as necessary.
No but you could. Because the shapes look the same but each shape slightly changes from sign to sign. And thank you for watching!!
Nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Excelent !!!
Thank you!!!
I am building a sign using red cedar. If I am to use the 1 shot lettering enamel, what do you recommend I use for a primer? I'm concerned about the bleed through tannins. Also, is there an equivalent to the 1 shot brand I can use as the base white? TY!!
Try Jay Cooks Primer, don't have any experience with it on the Red Cedar. 1 Shot makes two different Whites, and with the right primer should work as your base coat.
Thank you! I used Kilz and am going to top coat with a high quality exterior or 1 Shot. The letters will be routed in.
Do you seal the sign afterward? If so, what do you use?
No additional sealing is required. The Oil based paint and Cast vinyl are made to be outdoors and generally have a 7-9 years exterior life.
Been reading up on tools a bit, some people recommend the gunner grip Bosch jigsaw, have you had any issues with the black and decker? And what circular saw would you recommend? Thanks for any help
I've had that JS for years and years, I know I need to upgrade but it's done me well so I can't complain. Personally just use what fits the budget my CS came from my step father it's a 7 1/2" and use it to cut plywood to HDU with the same blade. I generally use my CS just to knock down 4x8 sheets to more manageable sizes.
@@TheSignGuy thanks
What do you charge for a sign like this?
generally around $400, but there are variables.
