Steven Lawson: Against the Claims of Atheism

  • In our age, as in every other age, there are those who deny the existence of God. Recent years have witnessed the rise of a particularly militant form of atheism, represented in the writings of authors such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and Daniel Dennett. Although the "new atheism" is not all that different from the old atheism, Christians today must stand firm against the challenge of atheism.

    Had to stop at 21:00 as this so misrepresented how I was as an "angry" atheist. I certainly was not _pretending_ God didn't exist. Even now, often I *feel* like there is no God, because my experiences are so ordinary and/or tactile, it's hard to imagine a supernatural realm existing in those moments. I have to go through a list in my head of all the reasons I believe, and then I just accept God exists, even though it doesn't *feel* like it's truth (facts aren't equal to feelings). Nothing like what this message states, sorry. I can understand how people can go with their feelings, that reality is only what we see, hear, touch.

    • @lilacDaisy111
      @lilacDaisy111 Před 6 lety +2

      Oh, man, my wishful thinking is that there is no God to be answerable to, no heaven to glorify someone other than myself, no hell to torment my precious loved ones, no rules to live by. I _want_ to be my own god, living for myself and satisfying every itch without guilt or shame. And then dying to experience painless nonexistence. I didn't "feel" pregnant, either -- I couldn't see, hear or touch it, so it was too hard to imagine to feel real. I had to remind myself of the blood-test, the physical symptoms, the doctor's words. Similar thing. Feelings aren't reliable indicators of facts.

    • @lilacDaisy111
      @lilacDaisy111 Před 6 lety +1

      I hear you. I've sat here for two minutes, trying to figure out which one to start with. This is why I don't usually bite these kinds of things -- it's too big an answer. There's so many varied things that convince me, so I'll just put the titles (each one of these has fify bullet points). The so-called "god of the [plethora of] gaps. The phenomenal wisdom and beauty of Christ. The unlikeliness of the repellent gospel to appeal to anyone (worship a disgraced, dead jew as God, testimony of said jew raising from the dead from women in an age when they had no voice, noted embarrassment of disciples who were the spreaders of this news). The phenomenal wisdom and beauty in "accidental, mindless" nature. The moral law imprinted on every human heart that says, "That's not fair," and, "They deserve what they got."
      As an atheist, I wondered why we all take such offence at being lied to or gossiped about. These are things we all enjoy ... if they're not directed toward anyone we love. It's a moral law, I realised, and tried to explain it away with Evolution. The more I tried, the more the above things came to mind, and not only did Evolution not have the answers, the Bible did.
      Unlike other religions, where power was for the strong, for the men, for the elite, Christianity put all people on the same playing field: "God is not a respecter of persons." This is the start of more rambling, I suppose, but these are the things I cannot ascribe to coincidence anymore. The volume of improbabilities was too overwhelming for me to deny the existence of God any longer.
      Admitting this to others was the most humiliating thing of my life, because I'd been so staunchly against it.

      +ProfoundClarity I'm Christian but I have to say that when I heard this I thought the same thing, "bad taste!" I enjoy Steven Lawson's teaching, but I couldn't help thinking how cold his statement was about Hitchens. I had to ponder it for a while. I know we make remarks about people from the past who have hated God, statements such as about Voltaire's home being used to distribute Bibles, and remarks like that can be very insensitive and cold even given the distance in years that we are separated from that person. I couldn't help but wonder how much time needs to pass after the person has died before it would be considered okay to make similar remarks, if at all.
      You're absolutely right, since Christianity is true, shouldn't we as Christians (I'm talking about we Christians, not you) pity these poor souls all the more? Shouldn't there be compassion? I suppose in some sense we are very sad for these people because their suffering is NEVER going to end! Not ever. It won't even let up a little, not even slightly, not the least little bit! It will be 100% suffering FOREVER! That's a horrifying thought!
      On the other hand, the time for compassion and caring has passed. They've made their choice to reject God (even if it was a non-choice or for the lack of choosing)! They chose sin over God; and God, because he is holy, holy, holy MUST punish sin - SEVERELY! In our limited minds we think things like, "yeah, but forever? Why can't they just pay for it and then be set free?" But that's just the point - that's how AWFUL sin is!
      We tend to think that there must be a point at which enough should be enough. But GOD, who is the only One whose thinking is not distorted, confused, tainted, or lacking in any way, and whose judgment is 100% pure and just, informs us that even the least of sins is so unholy that it must be dealt with ETERNALLY, forever, without end! Sin is that sinful, and God is that holy! But because there can be no love without justice, God, who is 100% perfect love, must punish sin in a perfectly just manner - which requires all of eternity to accomplish. Anything else would not be just. It is impossible for God to not punish sin in this manner because it would be contrary to his very nature, and God cannot be God and non-God.
      I say the time for compassion is now passed because whatever good was in people before they passed, was there because of God. But now, because they chose to disbelieve God, or to remain with a lack of belief in God (John 3:16-18) they remained in their sins until they died, at which point whatever goodness that may have been there before has now been evacuated and their present state is one of only sin and hatred for God. There is nothing redeemable left. Even now, when there is no doubt about God left to them, they still hate and reject him! It is this that is the reason that Christians can seem so cold when they say things like what Lawson said.
      But, also because God is a loving God, he has established a way for us to escape the righteously deserved punishment that we all have so wretchedly brought upon ourselves, and that was in the eternal payment the he himself met so that any of us who chooses can escape the day of judgment that is in each our not so distant futures.
      Just because you really want to disbelieve something is true doesn't make it not so.

      When i look atheist denial of God, i remmember the word:
      1 Corinthians 1:22-25
      For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
      Atheist just like Jews that requires evidence to belief, and the evidence is given to them in work, death and ressurection of Christ, but they deny it, because its doesn’t fit to what they desire. And Atheist do the same, that complain there is no evidence to make them belief that there is a God, but they denied evidence given by God in God creation and God conscience in their hearth that testify there must be God, and further they deny the scripture that testify that there is The God.
      Because deep down they hate God.
      I just hope, they realized that the atheist should realize that they know nothing what condition after death, because its beyond material evidence. Its too arogant to state that after death is nothing, just because there is no material evidence.
      Of course there is no material evidence, since its realm of spritual. But atheist should consider this, you know nothing what happened after death is, but deep down your conscience always remind you about it.
