  • Kind of sick of the weekend warriors and “CZcams Photographers” giving their uneducated opinions on a lens they use for to create content vs an actual job. Don’t hesitate to throw the hate for those comments - I’m old as dirt so it won’t bother me. For everyone else- I’m a working professional and my opinion comes from actual use. Enjoy.

    i can see how the extra 5-10% of performance a specific photographer might gain from this from an IQ standpoint, compared to the 35mm f2 or 1.4 may be of some benefit in a “professional setting”.
    however, as many youtuber creators are speaking to the average consumer, who isn’t made of money, this is a tough one to give as a widespread recommendation to the everyday shooter. especially with the newer bodies, the f2’s and many older fuji’s lenses perform and focus more than well enough for all sorts of paid work - street & documentary photographer.

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Před 2 lety +9

      Absolutely agree. I use the 35 1.4 and love it. It’s an amazing lens. And I believe that it renders beautifully on the xpro 3 and xe4 - but I do love the increased speed and overall performance of the new 33. It is a superior lens in general and will show this - in what is bond to be a future chip upgrade in the future. I am a full time working photographer since 1982 and put my money in glass. I can certainly justify the purchase because this is how I make my living. But as a casual shooter or hobbyist, no question it’s an overkill investment.

      Too many (NOT ALL) CZcams photography channels are run by people who created their career from CZcams not actually shooting. They are gear reviewers without the actual real world experience of doing photography for a living. More times then not - it ends up being incorrect advice for people who actually want to do photography for a living.

      CZcams photographers either don’t show their work or their Instagram is full of over edited fad/trendy photos. They’re switching camera brands week to week. They usually talk about “client work” which we never see. Photographers can share client work once an embargo or campaign as been run. Thank you for confirming what I had sensed from watching those videos you mentioned.
    They were not only off in terms of focusing speeds (I own and have worked with almost all of the X Series lenses extensively including the new 18/1.4 which the 33/1.4 is sharing its LM motors with), but they were wrong about image quality of various lenses at certain apertures - mainly the wonderful 35/2 which is not as sharp (as if sharpness was all we look for) as they claimed it to be.
    I will be picking this lens up in about 48 hours and I could not be more excited for the tens of thousands of images that it will make.

    I agree about putting your money towards the lenses and not the camera bodies. I just did my first wedding as a favor and borrowed a friend's 50 f2 and I loved it. Went to the store to pick one up because I've also been asked to do a prenatal shoot as a favor, but the lens is on backorder. What they did have was the 33 1.4, so I said f'it and bought it. What a beautiful lens, night and day superior to the 50 f2 in all aspects. o was actually shocked by how beautiful the images were coming out, and the 50 is no slouch but you do get what you pay for in the realm of lenses.

    This was the first video from you I’ve seen and it left me with a bad first impression, if I’m honest.
    1. Trying to make yourself look more professional by insulting “CZcams photographers”? As if being on CZcams makes them less of a photographer. What is with this toxic attitude?
    2. Saying “this will future proof me” because if Fuji makes a camera with a bigger sensor, this will work on that” (paraphrase). Well it might, but it’s made for crop, so you would still have to crop in on that new bigger sensor. Or do you know something about the image circle from this lens that I don’t? (Genuinely curious)
    3. “I needed faster” they (33 and 35mm) are both 1.4, what are you talking about? (Agree about the weather sealing though. It’s why I’m looking to get one)

I wasn’t throwing a blanket comment on the entire CZcams community of photographers. But point taken. A lenses resolution matters - these lenses resolve much higher then the older ones. The lens is much faster focusing then the older lenses. Hope this answers your concerns and questions.

    Love your style. Subscribed. My Fuji 33mm f1.4 sits on my X-T5 almost constantly. As a hobby street photographer, I think it's really healthy for me because I have to work a bit harder to derive impact from its fairly natural/neutral look. I know all lenses benefit hugely from skill, but the 33mm seems to require an extra push from me - an extra effort in composition before the pictures come alive. Then it rewards me with pictures that feel true.

    Nice perspective.. just wanna make one thing clear though for people that might misunderstand you. This lens is designed and limited to apsc size sensors. If Fuji makes a "larger" sensor camera in the future this lens will still only give you the effective image circle of an apsc size sensor. So you won't be "future proofed" in THAT regard. But certainly the resolving power of this new lens will help with higher megapixel sensors in the future. I think this is what you actually meant by "larger" yes?

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Před 2 lety +3

      It’s such a matter of taste. Any lens at 1.4 has a type of character- but when it comes down to it, it’s down to what you look for in images. The sad part is most of us can’t put the “look” we want into words. When you get the right lens it’s just there. For me, I need to pay the bills with my day to day lenses and the new 33 hits more and provides what I need. But the 35 was a nice lens and did the job when I took my time with it. Unfortunately my “look” comes from manual focus lenses like Voigtlander and some Leica. I would recommend the rental option. It may seem like a hit with the rental fee, but the loss you would take on a used sale is much more.

    Can I lend your advice? I own a 16mm 1,4, a 35mm f2 (which needs to be repaired) and a 90mm f2. I am thinking about getting another lens to complement my kit, because the 35mm f2 doesn't have the same 'wow' factor as the other two lenses. I tend to use my 16mm f1,4 as my main lens because of its great image quality, but sometimes I just want more compression and a good amount of background separation. My main use case would be promotional video's, wedding photography, portraits, some food pictures and mostly reportage style photography - I like to take candid pictures and to be invisible, to really show some action and emotion, or action and environment (or 3-in-1).
    Would you advise me to go for a 50mm f2, a (maybe used) 56mm f1,2 or the 33mm f1,4 (which would render my to-be-repaired 35mm f2 rather useless)? Or even the new 23mm f1,4?
    Good to know: I rented the 33mm f1,4 for a wedding and it gave me great quality pictures with no real complaints on quality at all. Also, I used a 50mm f2 once on a shoot and was very happy with the result for portraits.

    Linear Motors is just a gimmick? Maybe you should do some research first before saying that. Or more possibly it is a gimmick on Fuji bodies because the body just have slow AF algorithm which is the bottleneck instead of the lens. On a Sony camera, there's noticeable increase in speed and accuracy on fast action from a newer generation lens with LM than older generation stepping motors, in particular from Tamron's RXD (stepping motor) to VXD (LM)

    Great to see the lens combined with an X-Pro body and it looks a perfect fit, which is good for me because my own X-Pro1 is going to stay around for a while longer yet. I am purely an enthusiast photographer with zero interest in video and it's pretty obvious that the latest three XF lenses are out of the top drawer and, as you say, built with an eye on the future and more megapixels in mind. That also suits me, because I think it makes sense to wait for the next sensor and confidently expect the price of the existing line of cameras (including your own model) to reduce significantly.
