  • Today we are talking about how to properly support a child that is going through a phase of not wanting to practice! The 8 tips i'm sharing are one's that I've found to be true in my years of teaching and coaching young musicians. If you have a child who is resisting practicing, try to remember there are also so many times in our lives as adults that we have lulls in our enjoyment or purpose of things and sometimes just need a little boost to get right back on track!

Great points. Sometime ago got invited to a gathering. 3 kids sat in front of a digital piano trying to play a beginner piece off a page. For over an hour they couldn't decipher half the notes. The father learned piano before and passed conservatory levels. He hated music and offered no help. After a year they all quit.
When you see 3 kids learning the same instrument you'd expect them to help each other and contribute to their progress. This was not the case. The surprise was the fact that dad got them into private lessons at all if there was no expectation any of them would play at an advance level. The 3 probably think they lack the talent in music although this may not be the case. The lack of interest is the main thing. What's the point of learning an instrument when nobody (including dad) has interest.

Excellent video. I can not believe this only has 471 views right now. My wife and I just watched it twice and we're going to sit down with our kids and discuss each point you've made. Amplify intrinsic motivators, intentional goal-oriented practicing, building on existing habits, etc. All of these are solid.
