    This was a quality video! I've only just started to care about the TVA due to Instagram golden era bodybuilding models. I always wondered how to do that vacuum pose so I just did a ton of trial and error and found out there is this lower layer of muscle that feels like you have to suck in towards your spine to pull the abs a certain way. Then you go on to say that it's helpful for bracing in the squat. Definitely do a video on the quads! Thanks for these videos, they help a ton

    Alright brother, I usually don't post on CZcams but recently i parted ways with a bad strength and conditioning coach in Scotland and i like the particular cut of your jib. On the off chance you read this i'd be very interested in hearing how you suggest vetting a reliable coach. I'm learning a lot from these no bullshit videos, the programming ones most of all, keep em' coming.

    Awesome video man (as always!) I have always struggled doing those cable crunch exercises, its so awkward for me but thats probably a good sign that I should practice it more. Thanks for the info man - i'm down for the quads to be up next (:

  • @monkeycucumber
    @monkeycucumber Před 8 lety +1

    Great explanation of the function of the ab muscles, however, the exercises ignore the hip flexor contribution. Looking at their origin and insertion, abs don't cross the hip, i.e. they don't contribute to hip flexion, instead, the abs pull from ribs to hip. You want both strong hip flexors and abs, but many people have hip flexor imbalance and synergistic dominance over ab/glute firing.
    I prefer to have my clients work abs from 1) a hip flexed position, so that the psoas is favored instead of TFL, etc. or from 2) a posterior pelvic tilt.

  • @KYATRAT
    @KYATRAT Před 8 lety +9

    Okay- I know training abs/core won't make you big and block-ey however I was wondering why some people end up having more a square frame (particularly females in sports like crossfit) is that due to genetics or the type of training that they do? If it is training, are there certain exercises to avoid doing?

    • @carinaneuman
      @carinaneuman Před 8 lety +2

      I was curious about that too! Why do the crossfit women have such blocky abs, but the body builder/bikini girls have tiny waists?

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  Před 8 lety +11

      It's all due to genetics and the sports predisposition of lifters. Essentially you're seeing the highest level crossfit women and to reach that level you have to be a genetic elite. Because of this usually the square, more masculine women will be the genetic elite. Women who are built in that way just perform better in that sport. Same thing with powerlifting, at the top level heavier, more masculine women will reign supreme and that's the images you see. If you look at just General crossfitters who don't and can't compete at a high level you'll see extreme diversity in body types. The abs have VERY little potential for growth, similar to the calves. Also it's worth mentioning, that boxy square look is actually hip structure/fat distribution not the abs or obliques growth. Women with curvier hips can have really pronounced abs yet their waist won't look blocky.
