It’s important to watch most of this video because I go over many different points, both positive and negative, that this tech could be used for if it actually happens. Ultimately though it opens up a really interesting discussion that gets you thinking about the future of how people could “play” modern games.

Hot take. I would not mind sometimes to sometimes skip the confusing puzzles. Example, God of War Ragnarok. Some of the puzzles that I was too stupid to figure out, became not fun. I had to go to CZcams to watch someone online do it so I could do it. That is a waste of time. If I could push an AI or autoplay button to do it for me, that would have been better, for the few times in the game I had zero idea where to go next or how to do the puzzle to prroceed.

@@PeteDorr right? Not all technology can be bad, I’ll further my example Pete my favorite game is the original Resident Evil 4 that game has a lot of button mashing QTEs Capcom didn’t account for the higher frame rate when they brought the game to 60fps and that made the game nearly unplayable for me especially on professional mode I had to by a third party Nintendo Switch remote with turbo just so I can complete the game. I have no issue with the original GameCube release I grew up with. So if this does become a thing I can see the positives and negatives but to me this can be a toggling option in an accessibility menu. Make it optional if you do that it can make everyone happy

Perhaps a mark for the accessibility angle: Making a challenging game more approachable for a younger audience. Assuming the game isn't for a mature audience of course, it might be nice for a kid to activate such a feature and still get the main events and story beats out of a game.
Another angle that might be neat is AI used to narrate in game text...story dialogue or otherwise. Or maybe auto translation of foreign languages?

  • @Noirevert

Friction is a really important part of some game designs. If this sort of thing does catch on, it might completely change the way reward schedules are managed. It does get to the fact that games are such a unique media experience; everyone could understand skipping ahead to your favorite part of a book or movie, but it feels weird to let a game play itself when you could spend that time on a title you enjoy more. I look forward to seeing if this has an impact on the PlayStation 6 roulette wheel streams.

Thanks for the video, Pete. You bring up the good point of this technology helping people who are physically unable to play through difficult portions of games. It's nice to see modern games accommodate to fans of gaming who deal with certain disabilities as it gives these folks a bit more of an option to physically play the game as opposed to watching gameplay on CZcams. Personally, as long as I am physically able, I'd like to be the one playing the games even if I struggle or lose constantly. I love the challenge and the grind.

We've had primitive examples of this since the 90's, although it was extremely rare to see back then. Looks like this is looking to take things a whole lot further, like what Nintendo has done in it's modern 2D Mario titles. I think it's going too far. It'd be a nice option for grinding levels in a jrpg, but that's where it should end. I mean, it's suppose to be a fun challenge to try and beat a game. If a game can play and beat itself, what is the point? You wouldn't want a puzzle that can complete itself, would you? I guess it could work if there were consequences for using it though, like you couldn't get certain rewards or get certain trophies if auto-play is used.
9:39 I sure hope not! Developer laziness is bad enough as it is.
12:02 Yes, this is another great point and I guarantee it's exactly what would happen to many people.

There is only one online multiplayer game I know that has AI controlled bots and that's the Mobile version of League of Legends (Wild Rift) if a player disconnects, remember this is a mobile game and mobile games especially 3D ones do on rare chances do crash, the game's AI will take over however there is an issue where if you return back to the game you can be in a random spot of the map also the player will be standing still for a second or two before they can move and figure out what to do. The AI isn't great, it only goes after threats that are present and scripted events depending on what's nearby n such, it can't pro predict jungle invades n make 300 IQ plays. That kind of AFK AI if someone lost connection is okay.
But having AI where the game is just beaten for you is just a massive NO NO! All players have to play the game on their own, there are easy modes for a reason and alot of JRPGs have a auto battle feature but it only happens when the player moves n triggers a random encounter so the player is still doing inputs but for the main battle they can just have the game script only just spam attack automatically or if the script director is good they use weakness spells etc.

I think everyone is looking at the Negative Extremes... why would anyone play Call of Duty if the Enemy Team could just turn on AI? I think Activision wouldn't implement it just because it would push players away. SONY is trying to get more and more people to play the game. I think the whole "AI Plays Your Games." Is for people playing a Single Player Game, they're at this one boss, they can't beat it, then the game uses AI to beat the boss for you so you can continue the story. If it's done right, and I can turn it off 100% and never use it, it doesn't bother me. Why would someone else beating Sekiro with AI bother me when I don't use AI to beat Sekiro? Who cares? Until it affects me, I don't care how other people play their games.

For sure, beating the games yourself is the way to go, but at the end of the day there will be lots of people that would take advantage of an “easy pass” in a particularly challenging section if it means they can continue to play and enjoy the rest of the game. They may not admit to doing it, but plenty of people will. Maybe turning off the ability to earn trophies or achievements for anyone that messes with “autoplay” for those segments.
