Open for the 3pm newscast from the ABC-owned station in Los Angeles, California. Recorded Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
Today during car chase coverage during the 10am hour, and officially on the midday news, KABC became the last station to launch ABC's new O&O group standardized graphics package.
For a station that took so long to launch, personally I am disappointed. They dropped their excellent 2013-era cuts of Eyewitness News from Gari Music for the 1999-era cuts WABC uses, which do not fit LA or its vibe at all. They also cut new voiceovers with Charlie Van Dyke and his voice has significantly decayed here. As much of a legend as he is in the VO world, it's time for someone new. They use Drew Patterson and Virginia Hamilton in promos, and both would've been a marked improvement here. The graphics themselves otherwise don't look much different than the other stations except WPVI which did their own thing.

Never in a million years did I think they would use the WABC theme.

WABC and KABC are both owned by ABC so if K wants to use the W’s news theme then let them! Sounds better than the other by the way!

@@meltedchaos25 Yes they used it from 2003-2007. Former ABC O&O WTVG Toledo also used it.

Yep and I don’t like the voiceover who does the intro and order the more suspense opening soon that KABC has been using for many years.
Maybe wait until Friday when the credits roll near the end of the 11 AM newscast?

@@spclanghorne4494 It is the same guy, but the script is much more dramatic than before. "NOW, LIVE!" sounds like something you'd see in New York, not laid back LA.
When The Theme is like from the one's at WABC, The Voiceover should realize from David Kaye or Mike Lewis saying in the Late 90s until 2004 "This is the news leader, ABC7 Eyewitness News!".

(Though the only complaint I have is that KABC is using WABC's cut, and WABC is using the old WTVG cut, which kinda sucks.)

WOW 😱, es raro escuchar el tema de WABC (Nueva York) en KABC (Los Angeles)
Y creí que Charlie Van Dyke se había retirado completamente, pensé que habría nuevo voice over en KABC
Pero al fin, TODAS las estaciones de ABC tienen nuevas gráficas finalmente ojalá también renovarán estudios eso también sería padre 😅

Also, it's a bit strange to see KABC use the WABC theme music. It'd be better fitting to use NG1 or KGO's NG1 theme music, in my opinion.
And what happened to the 2012 theme music?

Correct!! KGO and KABC were the last ones… knew it was gonna happen when the weather graphics changed first…. Same thing happened when WABC made the change

@@ohnewscenter Excuse me There's 3 markets that uses the Eyewitness News name in ABC network one of them is here in NYC in their studios at 66th Street and Columbus Avenue the other one in Downtown Chicago & Los Angeles which uses # 7 but of the 3 two of them you could see their studios from the sidewalk that is NYC & Chicago
WLS is using an eyewitness theme. Honestly it would have fit to LA better.
