Building Custom Hairpin Batwings For My 1931 Ford Model A Roadster

- We are finally back on the Sweet Heart Roadster after a summer full of mechanical work and wiring. The last big project we finished up was building the custom filler panels for the hairpins. The next step to setting up the front end of the SHR is to build Hairpin mounts or "Batwings". Matt's idea is to take the front portion of the wishbone and yoke section and graft in the Batwing to make a custom mount with an old school look. The finished project looks killer and really has an old school cast look to it. Once chromed it will look like it was done back in the day and blend in with all the other old chrome on this car. They look 50's futuristic if that makes any sense at all. It's cool to be the kid at the play ground with the one off stuff. AWESOME job. People at car shows will be scratching their heads.

The fabricated forgings are a terrific piece of detail artwork. Back in the day, engineers and designers took great pride in castings and forgings that looked just right. Nice work, Matt!

Matt, before chrome please check the tie rod and drag link clearances with your new spindles. When building mine, I had to remake the batwings to allow for additional clearance. Nice job, Doug

Love workin on my project more in the winter
Horse shoe nails are mini wedges and re excellent to align parts, you can tack over them and grind off the extra part of the nail head.
Love the look great job. Like Henry Ford said, It's just nuts and bolts.

You seemed bummed at the start of the show. I've never seen the method of combining the front of wishbones and bat wings before. Pretty ingenious. When you were finished the piece looked like it was cast. Impressive!

Matt, Lookin Good! If your steering is not going though your wish bone you should and the rounded nub like is at the rear of your wish to the front pieces you made today. Think about it !

Very cool Matt! Love the adding metal, “over” welding and grinding back to make it look like an old cast part. Have a triple carb intake I’ve been wanting to fab up for a Hudson but really want it to look old school and have been wresting with not wanting it to look like I tigged it up last weekend and I don’t know the first thing about casting parts. Thanks
Sounds like a fun project James! This method with some other tricks can really make the parts look like “old cast” speed shop parts!

Nice hairpins. I remember them from the magazines, Hot Rod and Rod & Custom when I was a kid. Very period. I wish there was something that could be done about those frame notches, though. They are total back yard mechanic IMO. I never saw anything like that in the magazines, and to a retired engineer like me, they look slap-dash. Square notches are stress zones and crack centers. I know the frame doesn't carry any load forward of the notches, but they stand out like a sore thumb... or like a hatchet job.
Maybe you never seen any but many were notched that way. I myself even notched a Model A frame the exact same way. Not back yard, I was in a garage. haha I think if anything done different it would be over engineered. I guess I don't see your problem because it's fully functional and plenty strong and safe.
Finished up really good, looking forward to following this build.

Your vise is a Beast!!! I have a similar model with anvil end but way smaller. Was using it like you to squeeze (a bushing) and broke the acme threaded main screw. I never would have believed it could be broke. I had a new shaft machined to save it. Your garage is a "Dream Garage"!!! Great videos, even Cooler garage/shop!!!

The mounting points haven't changed so it doesn't matter what angle the hairpin sits at as it'll all work as stock anyway.

Hey Matt, I truly enjoy watching your fab videos, the hairpins & brackets look real nice, I too have access to a mill & lathe as you do, I can't help but wonder what hot rodders did back in the day...I bet that's where the word "cobbeled" came from. Since you were welding cast steel to 1018 steel, did you use stainless tig rod? When I get the mustang back on the ground I will send you some instagram pics of my work...can't wait till you start on the 34....keep up the great work!!!

Parts that have been electro plated require a 1000 deg soak to clear the H2 out of the grain structure of the steel. I had shafts that were chromed for wear resistance and the cam lobe just dropped off.
Always thought the hairpin was developed to allow for the bars to flex slightly...as opposed to split wishbones, to compensate for the slight bind encountered when not pivoting from the center of the chassis, as Ford designed.

That was the part of building high speed huge horse power drag race cars. Only tool you had was hairy test drives until all alined and the car rode at a dead 15 degree angle down the straight line. For them you wanted a so called 15 degree dog track cause the physics of wheel touque at them speeds and pounds to the ground force it deadly straight you could not hold the steering wheel hard enough to make a straight line. Whach a funny car they run at a 27 degree i think it is.
