    I was homeschooled as a child so I really want to see this. Growing up out of the public school system is a bit of a blessing and a curse. Yes, you are something of an outsider when you enter the "real world" and society's rules and conventions will always seem strange to you, but honestly I wouldn't have traded it. I had a real childhood, full of long days of playing, reading, discovering, and creating. Now that I'm an adult, I have mental freedom and an independence of thought that not many people of my generation have.

      All opinions are subjective they differ per person, and everyone believes what they experienced is the best unless they hit the reset button and live the life the other way.
      So live your life your way.
      You can't wholly say that you have much more freedom and independence than any other unless you go through each and every one's mental situation.
      One way of life may not work for the other.

When those children grow up, they would look back at those years as probably the best of their lives. We could all only hope to be that lucky...

    • @jjlagoutaris518
      @jjlagoutaris518 Před 7 lety +8

      GSoundtrack By and large what was promoted was individual thought and rational argumentation-as was shown by the invitation on the part of the father to his younger son to explain why he believed the family should celebrate Christianity rather than Noam Chomsky day. The children seemed to follow a sort of curriculum as was implied by the father in the campfire scene saying the children had a certain amount of time to read xyz, which is comparable to normal schooling. How then, can you argue that these children are indoctrinated while regular, public school attending children are not? Unless you're willing to accept that these children are no matter indoctrinated than any others. The movie portrayed them as more Marxist for a very specific reason, namely that they were trying to convey their iconoclastic nature; your extrapolation of that portrayal somehow led you to propaganda, but nowhere did the film, to me, imply that these were the only sort of folk who could be raised in such a way. In fact, one key member of their family was shown to be unable to withstand these conditions despite being from the aforementioned generation of hippies and subscribing to philosophical Buddhism and like-minded western society eschewing ideology. Overall, some of your criticisms seem, to me, to be your distorted extrapolations rather than an honest recount of the movie's content. That said, the movie does seem, for better or worse, to promote individuality and at the very least highlight some niche systems of ideology.

    Good film. Back in 1980, I went hobo for a little while. Hitchhiked across the country. Slept under bridges, in missions and that road life. Met guys doing what these folks are doing in the movie. It's definite worth exploring this world, but you have to know what that means. First of all, living alone in the woods...you have to be in massive physical shape. If you are not in the shape of a pro athlete, you are in huge trouble. And alone? Alone is tough. Ancient cultures did not do it alone. If you are alone in the woods and just break a leg...you could die from just that. So, it's a tough road and hard. But...and here's the thing...yeah, you can bring a lot of that kind life into yours. You can train and through hike the Appalachian Trail or one of the other major trails. We knew some lawyers who made huge money for 9 months of the year and spent the other three months just hiking the world. So, the hippie trip does have real freedom. You just have to be careful about going whole hog or doing it without planning. And don't forget that the outer freedom has to be supplemented by the inner freedom. And that you get from peace and spirituality, from things like Hatha Yoga and meditation. Without the inner discipline, the outer stuff eventually becomes superficial and boring.

      @amando96 Před 3 lety

      Shape of a pro athlete here, but a broken collarbone made it hard to do anything for a few weeks. If I end up doing this lifestyle it can't be alone or I need to have some clever systems in place to allow month-long periods of time with not much heavy lifting

    • @nazianafis
      @nazianafis Před 2 lety

      Especially the bit about inner freedom. If one doesn't have that, the outer stuff eventually begins to feel mundane and even burdensome sometimes.

      Assuming that no major global cataclysm occurs in the next decade, his kids will be pained after growing into maturity without understanding the inner workings of society - let alone experience a much broader range of events that would ultimately shape them into better people. The kids are obviously made aware of their unusual upbringing in the film and are rightfully outraged that their parents grew them in a Petri dish. I agree with the grandfather -- it's not a good way to raise children. Parents should be supporters and guiders, not manipulators. Their kids should be allowed to experience much more and, through good intelligence and moral structure, decide what they want to do with all that they've discovered.

    • @donsherbs
      @donsherbs Před 8 lety +3

      I don't disagree with you; I've always been wary of the homeschooling concept, and how it could easily leave kids unprepared and vulnerable in the "real world". Speaking as a non-parent, I can only surmise that teaching children to have strong core values, a positive sense of self, and the ability to make decisions is paramount (too many parents today are ill-equipped to do this, as is evidenced by the insolent and fragile behaviours seen in today's crop of kids and young adults). If home-schooled or raised in the bush, kids should still be taught about the challenges and types of people/motives that currently exist in the world so they are able to size up situations and navigate. If schooled mainstream, the aforementioned key things must still be taught - at home, by the parents. See the general comment I posted, for my overall take on society and our future (and the assumption with which you prefaced your comment). Cheers.
