    Pixar's writers had a heck of a time convincing Disney to let them make this movie. Disney was concerned about merchandise sales, that no one would want to buy a toy of an old man, but I'm so glad the creative team held their ground and made it happen.

    • @20000dino
      @20000dino Před 3 lety +187

      I actually don't think it's nearly as simple as that....
      Russell's childhood is essentially the opposite of Carl's. Carl was shy, awkward and more of an observer, but had always someone who got his back and who actively showed how much she loved him (initially as a friend, of course). Russell is outgoing, positive and likes to participate, but he is utterly alone: his mom is gone, and both his dad and step mom don't give him the time of day. But, as children, both Carl and Russell have one thing in common: they love adventure.
      So, by the end of the film, when they learn to love and accept each other, they give each other what the other needs. Carl assumes the role of a parental figure, outwardly showing how much he loves and cares for Russell (especially in the scouts ceremony). Russell rekindles Carl's love for adventure and, more importantly, for life, something he had lost ever since his wife died.
      Russel is basically the child IN Carl.

      Ellie is the house. Her spirit lives inside it. That’s why the balloons lasted so long-they represent the strength of their relationship. And why the kid stashed away underneath the house-he was the kid Ellie always wanted, giving him to Carl. It also explains why Muntz died the way he did-the house and the balloons killed him. Ellie wasn’t about to let Carl and the kid die, not if she could help it.

    This movie gets me every time. I saw an alternate fan theory a couple years ago where they said that Carl was the one who passed, not Ellie. The adventure represents his "heaven". Russel is representative of the child they lost and placing the house at the falls was Carl making good on his promise to Ellie. He didn't know about her completing "The Adventure Book" because she finished it after he had passed and placed it in the casket. Made it a totally different and even more wonderful movie to me.

    Someone probably already said this but the house that the construction workers wanted to take from Carl and him saying no was all based on a true story of a lady named Edith Macefield. She even famously turned down a million dollars for it! The house is still in Seattle today and they eventually just built the mall around it. People even go and leave balloons on the fence now and it’s really cute. 🎈
