I love the direction you are going with a few suggestions. Consider real marble for your vanity top. You should be able to source a remnant to elevate your beautiful vanity. A darker wood stain on the vanity as opposed to paint would be nice since you already have a painted piece in the room. I suggest repurposing your bar cart elsewhere. It looks a bit crowded and detracts from the vanity, which will be a lovely centerpiece for the room. Perhaps look for a plant stand as you browse thrift and vintage shops. I suggest the Greta floral wallpaper. I’m too biased in favor of light colors to weigh in on your board and batten. That’s my 2 pennies (okay maybe it was 20 😊). I’m excited to follow along, and know the end result will be stunning and very Sarah.

The black walls seem overwhelming to me. Maybe not white either - grey, taupe - just a suggestion. Dark stain on the vanity seems good. I agree with others about the marble remnant and the size of the bar cart. Best wishes.

Agree with you about real marble or some sort of stone for vanity counter I’ve heard contact paper is not great for bathrooms just to small of a space and lots of moisture . Also vanity looks good when stained dark.

I like the amount of dark in the room with the black paper, but I would do navy or chocolate brown instead of black. I would change out that plant for a darker green one with big shiny leaves. I would either paint the vanity the same color as the walls or refinish it.

  • @MarieEmpringham-jl3qz

Sarah, If you refinish the vanity I would suggest marine varnish. I love the idea of wallpaper above, losing the plates and small curio shelf as well as the picture over the toilet. May I suggest a small cabinet instead of the bar cart with a marble top which could discreetly house laundry.
If you paint the vanity black I would do the large curio as well. The scones could be set a little wider apart. The ones in the mood board appear to shrink the space instead of widening it. Otherwise, I would use a wider mirror to keep proportions aligned. Love the tub setup.
    Have fun.

Love either wallpaper with a taupe-ish wall-color on the board and batten and the bit of ceiling that would be left. I think the white doesn’t play up the room enough and I’d paint the cabinet navy if that’s in the paper. Navy and gold are fabulous and I’d paint the shower rod gold as well. It’s a splurge for wonderful faucets, but so worth it on your main piece. McCenna used a wood product in her bathroom that was perfect for your little cabinet…. Cannot wait to see what you do!

I would change the toilet seat to a black toilet seat. I did that in our powder room bathroom and love the look. Black seat on white looks fantastic. The powder room in my 1910 house is white, black and gold details. The dresser could be in black...you have dark fittings on toilet and bath so it would look great.

Hello! I would definitely choose black for the vanity and rub n buff in brass for the hardware, the mirror, and your towel hooks - you have the bar cart in brass already. If you were to choose the darker wallpaper, I think along with the black shade sconces it would be too dark. So I would choose the lighter wallpaper you love, the black sconces, the marble top for the vanity and look for an old vintage (or vintage look) runner in taupes and blacks and such. The tub board could be stained black or a dark walnut. The art could be a few dark moody prints, like maybe a faded rose with a black background in a thick frame rub n buffed in brass - even though you’re a farm house it would look fabulous! I’m excited to watch along and see your final choices. Have fun! And I would paint the outside of the tub black 🖤

My druthers: Mock-up #1 with a softer, sage-undertone grey (more of a match for the darker color in the wallpaper) on the wainscoting .Given the white basin and the white taps, it seems best to marbleize the vanity top. I like the wood tone for the rest of the vanity. I do prefer the oriental rug shown in #4 to the others -- the small floral pattern does not, to my eye, complete with the wallpaper. I don't think the ceramic-shade sconces show up well against the wallpaper; the black ones are better. Whichever way you go, I'll come along for the ride!

Hi Sarah, I would go with the wallpaper you really love, how about a tan/taupe on the board and batten, the glass sconces, refinish the vanity, paint the doll cabinet a darker color to stand out and match metals; faucet, toilet handle to other metals in the room! Have fun! Whatever you do will be great!

  • @terrychancellor4593

The vanity would be so beautiful restored, it has some beautiful grain patterns in it. You could seal it with a marine grade sealer to withstand the moisture in there. I loved the black wainscoting but if it is too overwhelming, why not paint it the same color (or two shades lighter) as the wallpaper background? Just a thought! It would make the space look less chopped up with color and be very calming, and less stark than white. Definitely go with scones. If this is the room you use for your makeup application then the lighter shades are better. I do love the black wainscoting though and I think once the wallpaper is up it won't look so shocking as it does against the white. The lighter shower curtain will help balance it. And I would say no to the marble contact paper...not in a bathroom!! It will become a nightmare to deal with, fighting with moisture and such. Looking forward to how you will proceed!!

Sarah, I love that you show us the whole process. That's definitely how we learn!! I love your choices, and I agree that the black may be too overwhelming for that bathroom, however, I am not a fan of the board and batten area being white. It looks too stark against the wallpaper. Perhaps pulling another colour out of the wallpaper might tone it down a little. I do like the black shades on the sconces, but I agree that you are looking for more of a vintage farmhouse look, so the glass scones may be a better choice. As for the vanity. My choice would be to either paint it black or refresh the finish and use a real marble top. For the powder room vanity we put together recently, I did find a nice marble remnant at our stone yard, but they required a $1,000 minimum for the whole project. Fortunately, with the cost of the marble and the fabrication of the top and sides, we hit that minimum. Finally, I would do a round rugable rug in the bathroom since there are so many angles already. 😍

I love the idea of a dark color on the lower half of the bathroom, as it would feel so cozy. You would feel enveloped while taking a bath! Then the lighter wall paper, refinished wood vanity, marble counter, and black sconce shade to echo the dark lower wall. Plant stand rather than bar cart, and art with some wood frames to pick up the vanity. Splashes of antique gold too, including the sink faucet.
Thank you for sharing Sarah! 💕

A marble vanity top I think with the be beautiful… and maybe go the cheap way first to see how you like it…. Perhaps add a little lip around the top of your tub tray just so the items have something to bump against and don’t feel like they’ll fall… I think if you refinish the vanity and painted the boards and fat and dark like your info that might be a sleek option…

After redoing the sink base, use a waterproof clear coat like Varathane Spar varnish. I used it when refinishing our 1915 upright grand piano many years ago. It's held up so well and is so easy to wipe down.

I vote for cherry stained wainscot and black vanity. I don't love the black shades. Have you thought about framing your mirror with wood and staining it? I love the brass and glass of the bar cart but can you add those elements into an above the toilet shelf, instead? Then, remove the bar cart and replace with a nice basket. I'm not a fan of covering up that beautiful sink top with faux marble. Even if you painted the vanity black, I'd leave the cherry top. Also, check out the Eloise lights from Anthropologie. SOOO vintage.

You could use Minwax Coffee gel stain on the vanity. You can go right over the existing finish, the wood grain would still show, and you would not have to strip it. The only trick with gel stain is to wipe off the excess stain fairly quickly before it starts to dry and get sticky. I rarely leave it on as long as the can says to. I've also heard good things about Restor-a-Finish, but haven't used it. I like the idea of painting it black or navy too.

  • @kimwilliams1526
    @kimwilliams1526 Před 5 měsíci

My first thought on your desire to add sconces is your recessed lighting could you replace them with hanging lights or little chandeliers? Are they spaced so that they flanked your mirror and vanity? I just replaced mine with kits that are in my kitchen over our bar. Super easy and major style impact. Got kits from Lowe’s and there are 10-15 choices of globes. Definitely think you should try the marble contact paper. Who uses this bath and how much wear does it get. Paint the vanity or stain it darker if you can cover the worn spots. Paint the walls navy and either wallpaper looks great. Love the little doll storage piece. It may need painting when you get to the decor stage.

Whichever wallpaper you go with - both are lovely - I feel the dark board and batten really elevates your space. Because of all the inherent white (Sink, toilet, ceiling, tub) AND it is only half your walls, it isn’t overwhelming. Maybe not black, but charcoal or navy, or a black-brown. And I vote for the brass sconces with the ceramic shade over black shades. And PLEASE keep the vanity wood, but with a marble top, natural if possible, or a quartz marble look, or even the contact paper (which I used in a rental kitchen for two years with virtually no wear).

I love the bathroom and and the direction you are headed. Like another comment made above, use marine grand varnish on the vanity. That's what is used on boats that are constantly being exposed to water. Also, I agree with another comment that the bar cart seems out of place. Maybe paint it to match the other colors you choose on the end. Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't see any other gold finishes in the room. Will be excited to see how you progress.

For me, 2023 was the year of the sconce! Yes, love the sconces, I like the fluted bell shape for the Edwardian look. I agree with brightening up the mirror with some Rub and Buff. Both of your wallpapers are beautiful, with the Greta having layered time story to tell. My eye sees it pulling of the Arts and Crafts of Edwardian and can also go Colonial and even Tudor. Love the white marble to balance the white of the tub and toilet. The black board and batten looks good, but I would love to see a deep navy blue on your Canva. I think it would balance the wood tones, and navy blue always looks beautiful in a bathroom. And while I love painted pieces, the wood on the dresser vanity is gorgeous. I would just restore it.

I have had a bathroom that I painted wainscoting white and the wall above a deep chocolate brown. There was very little natural light in that room. It was very difficult to apply my makeup because the brown sucked up so much light. I had a hard time seeing myself in the mirror even with multiple light sources. Empty the room no bar cart, no curio, no kitty corner cabinet, no plates. Refinish the vanity with a darker stain, marble top, (if in the budget,). Paint wainscott a darkish colour to complement whichever paper you use. Put your pot lights on a dimmer and use the ceramic sconces. Match tub caddy to vanity stain and move those large glass jars to a shelf at the end of the tub. They look dangerous! A hamper can hide where the bar car is, towel storage on a shelf behind the door. Larger rug to fit from vanity to tub. No fake plants or contact paper.

Me personally. I'm not a designer by any means. I just love black. My bathroom is smaller than yours and I don't think it looks too bad. I added an antique mirror subway tiles as a backsplash behind the sink and I would love to do a claw foot tub as well. I was thinking of doing the wainscoting for below and wallpaper on top. I like the Greta Floral wallpaper! I also think the black board and batten might be too dark. I would bring the black in by painting the vanity and either real marble or the contact paper for the top. I like the white board and batten. However, I am not as much a fan of dark moody colors so of course that is personal preference. Maybe consider placing a laundry hamper or basket underneath the bar cart or if you have somewhere else to move the doll cabinet you could have a larger hamper behind the door somewhat tucked away and out of sight. Of course you could have a stylish hamper behind the door. I would remove the plates on the wall as you mentioned. Thanks for inviting us to design and process along with you. It is a nice grey, but is not for that floor and vanity, the wood tones are fighting with that green. Go with the black. It receeds and is looks very elegant. Also, if you like green look for a very dark green that does not read blue in certain lights.

I can't tell what the colors are in the wallpapers. I know you mentioned navy in the one on the left, but don't know the other colors in it. I'm thinking navy on the board and batten, the wallpaper above and then if the lighter color in the wallpaper is cream - that would work on the ceilings, door and other trim. Or you can add a bit of the navy paint into a white paint and adjust to a color that would be in the same hue, but a much lighter tint to paint on the ceiling. I did that in two of our bedrooms that have wallpaper-it is subtle but classy looking. (In the 1970's we also put wallpaper on one of the bathroom ceilings as well as the top half of the wall above the tile). If you use navy on the bottom portion of the walls then I vote for a darker stain on the dresser, (and same stain on the wood tub tray) with a real marble top. I like the idea of gold sconces with your shades painted navy to match with gold on the inside. Or, if the ceramic "skirt" shades are cream and the sconce is gold that would also be lovely. Gilding on the mirror is a "yes" vote from me. Switching out the faucet and toilet tank handle to the gold/brass color would look elegant, (I found good prices on "Overstock.com" several years ago.) . With shower curtains to surround the tub, you wouldn't see the color of the tub/shower hardware or may blend ok as is. I've enjoyed watching your CZcams friends that you recommended and I've downloaded several free art prints from Tami/Tidbits. I think she has some that you would love for your bathroom. This is a link to a possible idea for an indoor/outdoor runner for the floor: overstock.bedbathandbeyond.com/Home-Garden/Medallion-Lattice-Navy-Ivory-Loop-Pile-Indoor-Outdoor-Area-Rug-710-x-1010/21719890/product.html?refccid=5TRUYNTMQ4Z2VMCHDRX5SC454Y&option=36184962&osp=true&lyceumGuid=1ce6ab10-1078-442c-b730-ffc066dd94f9&searchidx=23. I agree with other commenters on removing the cart. A vintage wicker hamper painted in the same navy as the wall would be nice for the laundry. And a plant in a brass container or an asian blue & white ceramic could go on an antique shelf on the wall or antique plant stand. You are one of my two most favorite CZcams ladies! Thanks for reading!

I love your ideas and creativity! I think I would splurge on the ceramic (skirted) lights.
Then on the vanity, I know how much some don't like painting wooden pieces, although I think it would look timeless in black.
I believe it would go beautifully with the floral wallpaper that you love, and also make the hardware on the cabinet pop. I imagine the contrast of the black with the existing hardware would really marry well with the finish on the sconces. ❤
Have you ever considered painting your curio cabinet black? I know it's a lot of work when it's not needing it, although I think it would be beautiful and actually showcase the things within your cabinet more, and give a nice flow to the bathroom.
Are you painting the outside of your tub black? That also would look lovely maybe with the feet done the same finish as your sconces. 😍
Anyway, I'm confident that whatever you go with will be gorgeous.
I have used Iron Ore by SW at my cottage on the inside of my door, and absolutely love it by the way. 😉
I can't wait to see what you decide on!!! 🥰

So smart to use the paper to test the color! My hubby would have said I was crazy to do that but then understood. LOL Also smart to use Canva to visualize before taking the time to test the paper. I believe you can group items and lock them into position so you don't have that annoying habit of selecting the trim! ;)
I love the sketch-style wallpaper! It is beautiful and can transition to several looks if you ever want to do another refresh. As for the color combos, I know It's not necessarily Edwardian style but what if you tested a visual of the vanity with bleached wood or a color wash like you did on the desk in your bedroom? If you do change the color of the vanity maybe you can try a dark chocolate brown or dark greyish green on the walls.
You could also test out the marble contact paper on the bar cart. If the runner you choose and the items in your cabinet have some white and grey in them the marble won't seem as out of place. Maybe even a little marble figure or pestual in the cabinet plus a little greenery to pull that across the space.
If you switch out the faucet to a color similar to the cart metal it might make the gold not stand out so much - and adding sconces with a similar metal will help too. I love the black shades and don't think they are too fancy. In fact, they will coordinate with the black of the art prints and frames to make them feel more intentional. If you go black with the vanity maybe pull the tan tone from the wallpaper for the batten wall so the contrast isn't so stark on the bottom.
Having seen your other projects I know whatever direction you take will be amazing!

I personally don't like the black but using, maybe the color is like Salvage from Magnolia paint. The sink top would be beautiful with real marble. I love both wallpapers, but hard to see the true colors in them because they are altered when viewed on a screen. I'm just sharing some personal thoughts. I am looking forward to the finished product. ❤

I have dark chocolate brown tile on the lower half of my bathroom and brown tile floors in there too. It’s a small bathroom - smaller than yours. I actually like it a lot. I think wallpaper on the upper half could work with it. Maybe not the wallpaper you have chosen even though it love it because it has black line drawing right? Dark brown looks so much softer and warmer than black to me. Have you thought of brown instead of black? I don’t know how that would work with your vanity. My vanity is a creamy white. I look forward to watching your process. Thank you !

I know that whichever direction you end up choosing it will look fantastic. I personally love the mirror with the dark wood instead of the glam look of gold. But hey, that's just my preference. Is this your main bathroom where you do your makeup and what not? If it is, then you may want to consider how a dark space impacts things of that nature. I'd go for real marble if you can and a stained dark wood as Lisaadiff suggests. I need to redo my small bathroom so this is great to watch! oxJulia

I love old bathrooms, ours in from the 50’s with white hexagon tile. I love the wallpaper with a navy vanity. A white solid stone such as marble would be beautiful on the vanity also. I think a vintage inspired rug would just be the finishing touch. I’m excited to see what you do with the space.

It gets raggedy and dirty very quickly. You may want to consider bullion trim instead, which has more substance. But I think that would get raggedy and dirty very quickly, too.

Sarah I agree with some of the other comments that you should use some type of marble or quartz on the vanity. keeping it in a wood tone but much darker. It definitely matches the floor too much. Contrasting would look much better. Consider going with a medium taupe that would complement your wall paper. Did not like the white at all and I just feel like the room is too small to go real dark. The bar cart needs to go and the glass Curio piece behind the door needs to be more functional and not just decorative. I do a lot of repurposing furniture and there are many options for that area. Making that piece taller, framing the sides and putting frosted paper on the front so that you could actually use it for towels and products to make your bathroom more functional. I loved the lights that were glass. They would give you much better lighting than the dark shades. I think small vintage oil paintings on the walls beautiful. Good luck. Can’t wait to see the end.

  • @Varykino1917
    @Varykino1917 Před 5 měsíci

What about the Rosevinge wallpaper, black bottom walls, and paint the vanity a dark charcoal grey color with the black sconces. Maybe you could leave the counter top as it is and that would give it more warmth. Then you should paint the shower curtain rod an antique brass color to match your shower faucet. Off white shower curtains - Battenburg lace if you can still find them. Rub that mirror with the gold maybe antique gold but you would have the gold highlights from the sconces, the mirror, and the bar cart. A light colored bathroom rug. Plants on the top of the cart and curio cabinet will make the bathroom friendly. Jeanne Moreau once said that you can never be too feminine and I vote that you can never be too elegant. Raise that bar - be elegant! Best of luck and thank you for your sumptuous video! Love it!
    P.S.
Maybe the reason why the black paper is so overwhelming is because you don't have the other elements in place to balance it. You don't have to go with jet black - maybe a very dark charcoal but once you get the wall paper and art work to balance it, it will probably give you that Edwardian feel that you're looking for.

First, I want to say thank you for showing me. How are you do the mood board. I really appreciated that. Also, I want to say that I really love the black or maybe black wouldn’t be the answer maybe like a charcoal gray for the walls. Like a deep gray. I love the sketchy light wallpaper that you have picked. I’ve noticed lately with board and batten, especially with the height that yours is maybe to put a small ledge all the way around so that you could sit different things on it. I don’t know things like, little bud vases, with a flower in it here in there. I definitely left the bar cart in there …so cool. And my question to you is I have such confusion with rugs. Do you put it in front of the bathtub? Do you put it in front of the toilet. Do you put it in front of the sink? Or do you just put it in one place and the rest goes with nothing? I don’t know it’s my bathroom is all squished together so I don’t know which place to put the rug.
You are doing a fabulous job explaining all of this to us. Thank you.❤

I feel this bathroom is very small to go to dark. Dark vanity might be enough but stay lighter. Get a marble top for the vanity top. Put your money there. I am not a fan of the gold turn in figures. Where it looks nice now it goes out of style very quick. Just my thoughts.

No to painting the wainscoting black, but feel you’ve already decided that. Either keep the vanity top as is or buy a piece of marble. Don’t think you’ll ultimately like the contact paper and it won’t hold up as well as what you have or marble. Would love sconces on either side of mirror with fabric shades. I prefer the wallpaper with the taupe background and the navy. I would paint the vanity navy, but both are beautiful. Cream or white shades would be lovely. I would replace the rug with a muted antique Persian rug that has navy in it - timeless and goes with everything!

It is a small space. I would keep Board and Batton ?sp? White! I think it looks so Fresh and Clean. Then I would paint vanity black or stain.... Several points: your bathroom has no natural light or window. So anything black will again dive the room even darker. Paper wall is always beautiful…. In magazines. In a bathroom without window, after two baths and several hot showers, it will be ruined. To finish with the positive note: I really like switching the bright violent light from the ceiling to two lovely lamps on the sides of the mirror. Put some coziness in the room and light colors. Let this black down…. It is sooooo cold !

I agree that the black wainscoting in that small space is overwhelming. Have you considered a color instead of B&W? Since you do have an old farmhouse, I think all the black is indeed too formal and not in keeping with the period of the house. What about a very dark green, or what about mimicking the darker color in the wallpaper for the wainscoting? That gives some continuity but a lighter feel overall. I love the lighter wallpaper. I feel like the darker one is oppressive in the small space. So, lighter wallpaper, with the wainscoting the darker color in the wallpaper (kind of goldish/tannish), then the vanity in a darker wood tone but not black, the glass wall sconces, and go bright solid for the rug -- something a little contrasty, then maybe paint that tall cabinet the same bright contrasty color as the rug. I know you don't like reds, so how about some shade of blue or blue-violet?

I think there is too much contrast with either the white or the black. With either paper I'd pull out the main background color for the board and batten and trim and maybe even go one or two shades darker so that it coordinates. Then play with either the wood or black on the vanity for depth and contrast. My vote would be wood. A little black here and there like on hardware and faucets and lampshades would go well.

I like the wallpaper closer to the shower than the other. The other feels too heavy. And I like the picture of your focus. Not black, I like the brown but then I would change vanity to a beige to go with wallpaper.. I also like the greyish to match the paper or white. Don’t like the black sconces. Yes black is overwhelming. What about trying to figure something that goes with the print in the paper to do walls, a soft calming brown. Not beigy i can see it but can’t describe it.

Okay, I have a question . . . WHAT IS WITH THE PLATES ON THE WALL? 🤔 Plates on a dining room or kitchen wall I get . . . but not on a bathroom wall. Also, consider what you will be looking at when you are soaking in the tub. You will be facing the toilet and faucet for the shower/tub. Can you come up with some kind of shelf where you can place candles or mirror or I don't know, something relaxing and nice to look at. For a practical addition . . . a place to lay a book. 🙂--Sheila McDade
