This tutorial explains what sidechain compression (or sidechain "ducking") is, the uses of this technique, and demonstrates four methods of achieving this effect in FL Studio 12.
00:13 - What is Sidechain Compression?
00:38 - When to use it?
01:24 - What is Phase Cancellation? (Where'd my bass go?)
02:30 - Wave Candy
06:14 - Method #1: Automation Clip
09:42 - Method #2: LFO Tool (www.xferrecord...)
11:49 - Method #3: Fruity Peak Controller
14:27 - Method #4: Compressor (Fruity Limiter)
17:34 - My Favorite Method + Final Thoughts
Questions or comments? Leave them below and I will be happy to help. Tutorial requests for future videos? Let me know!
For methods #1 and #3, as suggested by some viewers, instead of automating the mixer channel level (and worrying about re-routing to separate mixer channels), an easier approach is to automate the level control of a plugin at the end of your FX chain (important!) - something like Fruity Balance or Parametric EQ2 - basically anything with a gain or volume control.
Electronic Producer can u please tell me whats your opinion about the fl plugin Grossbeat and the Kickstart(by Nicky Romero)?
😇💓💓💓💓tq brother

I just love this guy, the way he teaches just like if he's teaching it to a 3rd grader and explaining everything he does is so awesome because it means anyone who watches his tutorials will get what he's trying to do and his tutorials never feel like a waste of time.. Dope..
Bro. Make more tutorials. This was by far the best and easiest sidechain tutorial I've seen. I've been trying to learn about sidechaining for the last few days and this tutorial is by far the best. Great job. Make more lol
Man, every time I stumble upon one of your videos I think to myself "Damn, this guy explains methods so well and makes it so easy to understand". It's a shame you stopped making videos, I will subscribe hoping to see new videos one day. Hope you get back into tutorials man!

Thanks man! I finally understand perfectly what sidechaining does and how to use it. Liked and added to favourites! Cheers!
This is one of the best tutorial on sidechaining in FL Studio.
now i know what the release comp does, after like 90 explanations... tnx mn
Old is gold.
Beautiful video.
Looking for more
This is the best explained sidechain compression video for fl studio I've seen on CZcams. ..thanks loads for this
This is the first video with working installers, thank you
Outstanding tutorial man. Loved it. Thank you.
I can feel how happy you are because of the update.
you could also apply the side cain compression only to the frequencies affected by linking it to the frequency of a high pass filter
This is the best free software Ive seen. Respect.
What a video bro! Can't thank you enough! Thank you so much you made life so much easier!
in my experience of watching tutorials you are the best...
what makes you the best is simplicity words, i mean not scary words! and of course your knowledge.
thanks alot
would you upload more tutorials in the future?
looking forward to learning from the rest of your videos. Subscribed!
Side chaining is very important and to start to understand how to match kick and bass has many methods.First is to know lenght of kick and make kick to be in key of the whole track.Later on calculate lenght of kick in miliseconds. On that fundation you can make bass to be compressed less and have more bottom end.FL limiter is easy but first fail is no value meters. This does not help to know how many dB you reduce bass line for example.
For trance make kick shorter and give good attack ( klick) then you will avoid problems with bass.
The only video that is easy to understand and on-point! Good Job!
No word of a lie these tutorials are so helpful mate, keep up the good work fella
Duuuuude, we need more of these videos!! You are amazing pls keep it up!!!
I am very glad that I stumbled upon your video
Thank you! The Fruity Peak Controller Method is so much easier than the way I was trying to do it before.
Everything's free If you're brave enough.
😂😂😂
🤣🤣
I'm learning so many new helpful little things from your videos, keep at it
Bro get back in tutorials you’ve helped me so much man
The best soft soft tutorial ever!
BROTHER, YOU ARE THE BEST!!! You oooh really helped me!! THANK YOU VERY
My favorite tutorials on CZcams. You're awesome!
a tutorial on how to organize a project would be awesome!
Like, where do you start when you want to produce a song, is there any steps to respect to be sure to get the right things done at the right time and so on. I guess it's very tied to the producer himself but i bet there are some general stuff that everyone does the same and are useful to know (like everything else it seems)
Your videos are bright clear, gotta love it ;)
you have really good easy to follow tutorials
You need make more tutorials bro theyre the best ive seen on CZcams
Best tutorial for Sidechain so far. Good Job dude ! Thank you.
This was the best and most detailed explanation I've seen to date thanks
I really like the way you explane things! Please ad some more content! I am very interested in how you manage to create a full sound using EQ and (multiband) compression.
You can also sidechain with Gross Beat, just go to the volume tab, make a sidechain envelope 4 times, and then save the state and there you go
Brilliant video, one of the best tutorials I saw on the subject. Thanks a milly!
Great tutorial! I came here looking for a different method than the compressor one because I was having problems with it. Basically when I sidechained the kick to the bass the kick would get distorted somehow and I didn't know why. Here I finally understood why: I was forgetting to turn down the "send" volume know on the bassline. Thanks for solving the problem haha
Good job bro, subbed and finally understood the punchy basslines, thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
do more of this!! this is amazing
tipps and tricks for arranbging would be nice , but a tutorial to everything there is in fl would be an option 2 xD thanks dude
Elaborated, meticulous, teaching! 5 STARS!
One of the best and easy to learn technique, too good Bro.
My Friend, you really CAN teach! Subscribed!!
Great video man.You should do one on vocal compression in a mix!
Used to struggle alot with this but now its clear thanks bro!
Great content! HQ explanations, on point, easy to understand.
It worked. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Another method of not messing with the overall bass volume is to automate the volume of a fruity balance plugin on the bass insert.
Great tip. Thank you!
Agreed. I have made my Sub/Kick have different frequencies on some tracks. High pass my kick at 90 and low pass sub at 90. Then you can avoid side chain altogether. All depends on what type of sound you are looking for of course.
Interesting technique, but I would watch out for sharp EQ curves in the lower frequencies, as they can do some weird things to the harmonics. May not be an issue at 90Hz but still worth looking out for (you can see it visually in wave candy when it happens).
Very good explaining man. Thnx alot!
Hope you come with more....
You are the man, I wish you still made videos
beautiful techs, love from Argentina colega
Oh man, the only thing I forgot was to link the sub to the kick which he explains in 16:25. Thanks a lot for that ;)
Thanks a lot. Am looking to see more of your tutorials.
man I missed this kind of tutorials lol. Great work here, thanks!!!
Very well done, sir! You have my subscription. Thank you for the effort and time you put in your videos! Keep em comin.
Lfo tool was the best but the last one was sweet and knowledgeable. After two vids am Subed, your a teacher very good.
Great tutorial. From Lagos Nigeria
I followed these steps and I get the hack thanks for sharing this
Try sidechaining only the frequencies below ≈250 Hz in Maximus (or similar).
Do this, if you have info above 250 Hz in the bass track, that you still want to be heard while the kick hits.
Also. Make those low frequencies mono while you're at it. There's a knob for that in maximus too.
Hey man just four videos. We need more
14:35
I never really thought you would say something in that manner in your videos ever.. xD
As you're always serious in your videos..
Congrats, great video!
Awesome video, smashed that 'like' button
Keyboard now broken
teacher of the year award goes to u
Well explained and easy to follow through!
Gross Beat is a decent sidechain tool. It also has a sidechain preset.
Great comprehensive tutorial. thanks.
Now that was an excellent tutorial. Thank you Sir!
Always nice sir when people like you take some of their own precious time ( we music people know how valuable our time is ) and to explain things to people, great work ! Keep on keeping on, last time I used FL studio was whennnn I dunno..... when we were buying sneakers with lights in them so long time ago ..... Studio 21 is INSANE !!!! Times changed huh including the Math community and their INSANE math they let lose on our so precious plugins but always..... always nice when people sit down and explain things ! Good work ! Be the example and difference to the yanks, show them how to be a true American and not a yank ... ! 👍
your videos are the best.
I love your videos cuz it's pure info no bs
I just prefer to use the LFO tool to remove the lower frequencies of the 1st note of the bass so the kick has more room and isn't fighting with the bass anymore. Didn't realise I was sidechaining hah...Love this tutorial Thanks man.
Love your tutorials, man. The way you explain everything in detail is amazing. :)
I have a question btw.
Is there a way to use LFO tool to apply sidechain on to other genres that have different kick patterns like Dubstep, future bass, trap, etc.?
Great tutorial :D
Your tutorials are really awesome ! Love from India !
Make a tutorial on Maximus and Multiband compressor if possible.
I learned how to sidechain in four languages. Thanks!
Thank you very very helpful!!!
you deserve a lot more subs
LFO tool is good only if you produce progressive tracks or any other genre in which your kick always falls every 4 beats. For genres like future bass and trap, using an actual compressor is the better way than automating volumes since you have much more to tweak with and really carve out the sound you're looking for
rahulcasper That was a pain in the ass to do. I used Peak Controller, and fucking hell it killed me, I couldn't understand shit. After this video, I could understand stuff way clearly :)
Axelade didn’t expect you to be here
Omg thanks very much ! ✨
Awesome, great video!
Good presentation.. Make a vid on Delay Bank and reverb2
a video on busses and link parameters please ?
great tutorial, keep em coming
Holy crap it actually worked!
where is this guy ? his tutorials are so easy to follow
Thank you for this.
excellent tutorial, very well explained. ..
Also if you are fl user , you can use gross beat for sidechain. I use the automation method and im trying to get used to using compression method.
Helpfull video
Thanks
I usualy do method 1...
And i have another technique
I appreciate not having to chase the video on my volume control.
Wow nice Sir 👌 I've learned from u...!
