  • I recently had a request to upload higher quality versions of some of my older videos. Some of the scenes in this one appeared in my CP MLW's and Lac Megantic videos, but most of the footage is new to CZcams. It was taken in July 1989 on a weekend trip to Montreal. Locations are captioned.

    Those 4700's never looked the same, each one having a unique vent placement or color. Long before my time but I was blessed to see just one of them move east thru Michigan on its way to Canada.

    Excellent video well done.This is some of the best footage of CP's Alco/MLW units I have seen. Classic and from a long ago time when these locomotives were a regular sight on the rails. The camera work is good and so are the various locations. And it was also nice to see the pretty lady on the boat ! Thank you Fmnut awesome video ! 😁👍

      I was in a small park area next to the yard access road shooting over a chest high chain fence. A railway employee came out and started yammering at me in French. When I indicated I didn't parlez Francais, he left. About 20 minutes later an anglophone came and explained that, while they were NOT happy with my filming, there was nothing they could do about it since I was not on railway property. I checked the spot recently on Google Street view, and the access to that park plot is now closed off with a high chain fence and gate, and no longer is maintained with lots of rubbish and high weeds.

    Great videos through out the whole video. I am a student at a university in Sherbrooke and I really want to chase a CP train East. I didn’t know if you would have any tips or know any websites I could look up for help. Or if anyone reading this would have advice. Anything I’d appreciated

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 3 lety +2

      Back when I did these trips my only info was the Quebec provincial map that showed the roads and railroads. I would recommend following the route virtually on Google Earth and Streetview to see what shots are still possible, as many of the locations may have grown shut in the intervening 30 years, especially since vegetation management on the line was probably a casualty of the low budget operators after CP. Also, back in CP days train speeds were in the 30 to 40 MPH range which made chasing just within the range of possibility. If train speeds get any faster, you're out of luck.

    @allegheny48 Před 5 lety +2

    Thanks for this quality video too. Do you know if the 7 unit lash up was a power balancing move? Also, were they running with the carbody doors open for ventilation? I can see having the nose door open for cab ventilation. Some Canadian drivers aren't any better than some Americans when it comes to grade crossing safety. Loved the pacing scenes with the hotbox detector being heard in the background.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes, the big power consist was a weekend balancing move. It was quite hot the weekend of my visit and the hood doors were open to help cool the engine compartmentsp. The Alcos tended to overheat with all the hard pulls. When that 7 unit consist pulled into Sherbrooke the bells were ringing, half the units had low water alarms going off. A fitter was on hand to top them off.

    FM NUT, have you considered putting 1 & 2, and any other footage in a video/dvd? Like Tim Wakeman
    & Broken Knuckle did? Might be a real good seller. Id buy a copy.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před rokem +1

      Yes, considered and rejected. I have a friend in the business who says it's a declining market. Also, too much paperwork involved with selling things. Feel free to download and burn your own DVD.

    Unfortunately CP does not run east of Montreal anymore, just south of there toward Binghampton, NY and just west of there toward Toronto in Ontario.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 5 lety +1

      CP essentially traded the Maritimes/Quebec route for the D&H to gain access to Atlantic ports. New York and Philadelphia can handle much larger shipping than St John and without the issue of tides. In the long run the choice was moot as the bulk of the D&H proved unprofitable even with double stacks and operating economies. They sold south of Albany to NS.

    • @fmnut

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 3 lety

      The locomotives seen in the video are log gone, 25 years or more, but CP recently reacquired this line after a succession of regional railways operated it with mixed success. CN has a much bigger presence in Quebec than CP.
