- Learn how to play this classic Irish folk song, Fields Of Athenry, by watching this easy video tutorial by Flynner.
Lyrics:
By the lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling,
Michael, they are taking you away,
For you stole Trevelyn's corn,
So the young might see the morn,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.
CHORUS:
Low, lie the fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling,
Nothing matters Mary when you're free,
Against the Famine and the Crown,
I rebelled they ran me down,
Now you must raise our child with
dignity.
REPEAT CHORUS
By a lonely harbour wall She watched the last star falling
And that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay,
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
REPEAT CHORUS - Zábava
I am a Greek and I love irish music. Gonna try to learn it on guitar. Greetings from the Aegean sea my fellow irishmen!

This is one of my nan's favourite songs, I'm learning it to play it for her on her birthday, this helped a lot thanks!
The best form of sophistication is simplicity.
“An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity, a physicist tries to make it simple, for an idiot anything the more complicated it is the more he will admire it, if you make something so clusterfucked he can't understand it he's gonna think you're a god cause you made it so complicated nobody can understand it. That's how they write journals in Academics, they try to make it so complicated people think you're a genius”

Merci mon ami !! I am delighted that you enjoyed the tutorial and hopefully it will be of help to you. Sadly the Dubliners have now finished as there was only one of the original Dubliners still alive but they were a great band. Have you checked out the Clancy Brothers........if not, try them. Adieu.
Fantastic! I'm only1/8 Irish, but I've still got it in my blood! This is quality! I would have thought you'd have Irish rover, but I'll stick around and learn these first, maybe it's somewhere down the road!

You can leave out the highest note, and do something like this:
x
3
4

Just mute the highest string with your index finger by resting it against it. Though, it is easier to play a minor barre in that A minor shape than major barres in that E shape, so I'd say try it anyway!
lovely song. HAIL HAIL the celtic
Great version, what strumming pattern are you using?
If you could let me know I would very much appreciate it!
Thanks
lovely job fella.

Never play this song when there are Rangers supporters around.
sharperguy on the contrary, what better way to wind them up?
the words in the first two verses should be " prison" not "harbour".
