- Look no further for an intro on how to play Irish guitar music. Learn how to play a jig by using a 6/8 time signature with dynamic strumming.
Also use DADGAD tuning to get that wide open sound the Emerald Isle is known for. - Hudba
How I wish EVERYONE talked this way. Most people take so god damn long to actually get to the point. The world would be better if every spoke this fast and got to the actual point quickly like this guy.
Thanks so much Alex!
Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪 but we don't sound American haha. An we play rock too, not just jigs!!
I totally agree. I get aggravated when people talk fluff before giving the information.

You have no idea how right you are
"Now I personally have a very complicated relationship with alternate tuning's" 😂 So profoundly true for many of us
Excellent lesson! I've been playing guitar for over 55 years and I love learning new things. You have a great teaching style. Thank you!
thank you love love love Irish music and the country. we went a few years ago and fell in love with Ireland and the people are so friendly and would come up to us just to gab.
@ 05:42 "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion-"
Haha, yup.
It’s hilarious as an Irish guy to listen to you but you explain it so well. Love what you do man. I’m glad you celebrate your irishness. A few songs for paddy’s day would be great.
Thanks so much! I'll try and put something together :)
Thanks for not being one of those Europeans who denies our European identities
Always remember us american irish outnumber you ten to one
so to deny us would be to deny more than nine tenths of the Irish nation
No irish fella would Evar call themselves guys. You're a merrican aye?
simply awesome great way to boil it down. loved the rhythm and dynamics part. your a good teacher
Thanks for watching Jesse!
Boil that cabbage down, boys!
This is simply brilliant, thanks for the upload
As an Irish musician, and guitar player in particular I'm glad this video exsists
I've been looking for a while on CZcams for a video like this... Someone to actually SHOW me some chords/tabs in DADGAD. Thank you for getting to the point, playing it & giving a detailed look, appreciate it! Now its time to make a jig.
Dude, I just found your channel and I'm so glad I did. You went straight to the point and explained everything beautifully, please keep these irish music tutorials coming! Best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Thanks for the vid Sean, this is a great way to think of it. Simple enough, yet providing the sound we're all after!
I love the way you explained the theory, helped a lot
Thanks so much Nick!
Bam! You have become my hero. I have no musical training but I have been immersed in and playing American folk for the past several years and now I fell on my face big time with the song Kilkelly Ireland. I knew there was something going on with the rhythm but I could not figure out how to tackle it with a fingerstyle pattern. Whatever I did (obviously, based on a 4/4 pattern) it did not work out. One-too-three / Four-five-six ... and everything fell into place. Thanks a bunch, Sean!

So great to hear man!!
Very well done I can definitely picture this music playing in an Irish song
Thanks so much for reaching out and saying so!
I love your lessons man. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man! Will do!
Anyone else hear "the lion sleeps tonight" at 5:27?
It's an Irish lion at least.

+luis brito Thanks for watching man!
Nice lesson Sean. No wasted voice all useful, concise. Well done.
Thanks so much!
These lessons are easy to follow. Thanks for the video
Excellent Sean! Especially your making sense of dadgad by breaking down those chords. I have seen the light!
Thanks amigo! Stay safe, be well!

Exactly what i was looking for! Thank you!! :))
Happy to help!
I was thinking about some irish/celtic music earlir and this was on my front page haha. Thanks!
It was meant to be!
I'm from Ireland and I approve. Well done.
Thanks so much!
Sweet video. I've never even considered Dadgad in my songwriting. Thanks for the inspiration.
+Clark Tipton Thanks for watching Clark, yeah Dadgad is one of my favorites.
Thanks a lot! Sunday morning and finding a good guy for my guitar lesson:))
Happy to help
I'm from Dublin and this is so good
This is so cool I’m SO gonna use this when I’m better at guitar! I’m a beginner
So cool to hear you enjoyed it Sophia! Rock on!
realy nice tricks! gave me a new inspiration. thanks a lot
Loving the witty opening phrases. Truly breaking the fine line between sophistication and childishness. :)
I do what I can :)
Saturdays are for the boys!
We're all grown ups trying to be serious and learn some music and then you say "look at how I'm hammering the D" xD
Great video, man! Cheers!
I hammer the D better than most youtube guitar teachers.
Bwahahahaahahahaa! You the man! Or better yet, you d man xD
I believe that would be painful...
im 14...
7:35 Yes! I'm in the same mindset. Glad to hear I'm not alone
Thanks man i work at an Irish 🍀 bar, and I'm the bartender also the house musician. I'm trying to get some atmosphere appropriate music! Thanks man. I watch all of your videos, but this one helped pretty well. I'm gonna pick up a looper so I can play the scale on the 10th fret!
+Ash Duffey Very cool man. Thanks for reaching out. Might make a sequel to the Irish mucus vid soon!
Well done pal respect from dublin🇮🇪
Thanks so much! Cheers from the US!
Oh, a lot of Joni Mitchell's stuff, Tragically Hip's "Ahead by a Century", and Great Big Sea's "Boston and St. Johns" are played in DADGAD too.
LOVE that "example" chord progression... never thought to use it with a jig technique though... I think I might rip it off and write a song tonight lol
Totally with you with the whole tuning thing. I really am Irish.
Yeah that's such a cool expressive tuning.
Awesome video. Informative.
Hey I'm Irish and have a small gig tonight you just saved me 😂🍀🎸
great tutorial.. thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Your videos are always nice and chill. You can tell you really enjoy playing. Maybe a good reminder for your viewers is relaxing your hand a bit and getting a tad closer to the fret will help with a lot of the tuning issues. When you squeeze so tight it pulls the string out of tune.
Thank's a lot!
Very cool! Simpe and fum to play!
+Andrew Wallace Don't thank me, thank the Irish!
Fantastic!!!
Great stuff...your channel is wicked..has helped me to progress.finally someone who intelligently and practically helps Have you tried -- Down/up// Down/Down/up/down/down/up/down/down/up....and so on..it feels more natural for the 6/8 strum pattern in irish music..its what i was thought in Ireland growing up! I use DADGAD alot..that an Open G are great for songwriting actually..ok, open D too
Thanks so much for reaching out!
It takes a Yank to teach me an Irish Man how to play rhythm to my music. Top video for people trying to learn this type of music.
:) Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this amazing vid...I thought it was just me that was too lazy to de-tune a guitar ;)
Awesome!! Thank you man.
Happy to help!
Hey Sean, just want to let you know that as an Irish person I appreciate the effort you put into this video. There seems to be a lot of angry gate keeping Irish people in the comments that dont seem to understand why you can't cover every nook and cranny of Irish traditional music in a single youtube video. Don't listen to them.
Thanks for reaching out and saying so Frank!
@@seandaniel23 I completely agree with the comment from Frank C. I’ll be honest and say that having stumbled across your channel, I’ve had more fun playing with the guitar than ever before. You’re a fantastic guitarist, teacher and witty fella. Keep up the good work - I need the inspiration!!
@@daithiod thanks so much for saying so!
☮️🙏🇮🇪 Or perhaps, we all make a little more effort to speak knowingly and have correct information, so we don’t offend the whole country of Ireland by converting Reels and Airs into Germanic-Italian Terminology standards. It’s not about gatekeeping. The headline is misleading. “Celtic” is not the same as “DADGAD in 6/8”, that’s just not the way Culture exchange happens. .
Great lesson.
Thanks Andrew!
Awesome 😎
12:51 is not a D major chord. It is simply a giant power chord made of D’s and A’s. The reason you cannot call it major is because there is no major interval in that chord (Major 3, Major 7, ect...). To make a major chord you need all 3 notes in a major triad (root, major third, perfect fifth.) In this case D, F#, and A.
D major in dadgad would be 004200
Great video my Irish bro
Thanks so much for checking it out!
good man Seán, fair play to ya man.
Thanks so much :)
you got great intros man
and great elbow punch technique
Hey Guitar fella, as an Irish person - that is, one born and reared here in Éire - I have to say your potentially fascinating and valuable contribution to the spreading of Irish culture was shot in the foot even before it got off the horse by your tired, cliché, and inevitable North American assumption that alcohol plays such a central role in the Irish cultural identity
I totally admit my cultural ignorance.
Bless your Irish heart of oak good sir.
Very well explained
Thanks so much!
Thank you, Sean
Happy to help!
You got a thumbs up as soon as you said "alcohol," Approximately 6 seconds into this video! ;) Time for me to go find a Guinness; be right back, mate. And it didn't take longer than 1:19 for the first punch to be thrown! haha
Thanks so much!
bevvied up. Good man.
Thanks for watching!
luv it!
Thanks for watching!
I'm from Ireland and I love Ireland
beautiful guitar!
Thanks man, Taylor GA3, love it.
Had a Guild about 30 years ago and I loved it, STILL miss that guitar :-)
Thanks for all of your videos
Very cool 😎🎸
Thanks man!
Very helpful, thanks. Got a St Patrick's Day gig coming up - desperately need suggestions for some upbeat Irish songs for an acoustic duo (one/two guitars + harmonica and vocals, of course).
Hmmm, I'll need to research this one.
Try The Rocky Road to Dublin
Very nice lesson, very well explained! Something that is even more common is to go: Down Up Down - Down Up Down for the 6/8 pattern. This makes it easier to accent beats 1 & 4. That said, your way is fine too, but maybe a little less the way to go if you get really deep into traditional music. Really important to try to lightly mute the strings while strumming for more sound control. I make videos as well if you want to check out what I'm talking about, I even got some DADGAD tutorials. Give it a chance! Nice video man! :)
it looks a bit difficult but makes sense! Nice channel btw!
@@stevegagne5670 Hey your name looks familiar to me, are you from Québec? T'es tu québécois? ;) :P
Thanks so much! Definitely not claiming to be an expert so I appreciate any and all feedback!
I'm literally sitting down drinking a Guinness as I turn this video on
:)
Awsome!
Thanks so much!
No other thing to say but The Best!!
Flashback of listen to my mam playing guitar, that 6/8 timing does that
Where did you get this jacket?? It is so nice
BARNEY STINSON... What are you doing here!?
I'm Joking, Great video man!
Great lesson. Hope you can return to time signatures again sometime. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
When my family moved from Scotland to Ireland in the 1600's they changed their name from Moore to O'Moore, cfant get more Irish than that! :D
thanks man
As an Irish man who plays trad, I was waiting to see what his first chord would be to see how familiar he is with the music, I expected a A minor
The Melody is basically the look sleeps tonight
A true Irish classic.
My R-M222 Irish heritage! Lol
Great stuff, as funny as it is informative!
Happy to entertain :)
awesome
+Fernando Jimenez Thanks! Have a great St Patty's Day!
Im litterally drink as in trying to play Irish on my standard acoustic... Is this beneficial or negative?
Yeah!
Thanks for watching!
Good teacher
Thanks so much john!
I never understood why sequencers like the Roland TB-303 have the 'accent' button. Now I get where that comes from
Almost sounds like the notes for Parting Glass...beautiful Irish song...but your explaination helps in understanding what makes it "Irish"
Thanks so much, I'll have to check out that song!
Thanks for the link!
You're a very good teacher, and excellent musician.
Thanks so much Samantha!
I'm notching out a capo to raise the A, D, G strings by 2 frets. EBEABE tuning; same sound, one tone higher, no retuning required. 'Cause I'm lazy too...
I’ll be honest, a lot of the time we usually play a combination of three/four guitar chords with one single down stroke and then sing as loudly and obnoxiously as possible (often off key) and get everyone else to join in so people think we’re a bit of craic. 🌱❤️
:) That also works
Sounds somewhat Spanish at the end! I'm an Irish blooded USAer living in Nicaragua and have read that a lot of Spanish music, especially from Mexico has strong Irish influence from Irish immigration there hundreds of years ago! Listen to Chris De Burgh and compare to Marco Antonio Solís for example. Great stuff!!!
I'm mexican, and i think that what you a re saying is awesome👌
Very enjoyable and informative .... cheers Sean!!!
What are your views on the CAGED system? Are you planning a tutorial on the subject? Could prove interesting and popular ....
+Phil James Thanks! Yeah I've got a few more ideas I'm gonna try and get up first, but CAGED is definitely going to be on the list.
+Sean Daniel Great! good to hear.
Have a good weekend!!
Damn, i can all ready do this, i didnt know it was a thing, lol
Maybe you're Irish!
hi could you please do a vid about the Irish roar song I have a talent show coming up with me singing and using the guitar and two friends dancing to it

Right back at you man!
After a couple of guinness nobody remembers what tuning you are in. I have always avoided DADGAD because I am too lazy to keep tuning my guitar, but you had some good tips
100% understand.
Can you play Three sheets to the wind? Looks like you got it down.
