    I'm new to scuba diving. There's millions of worrying stuff going through my mind on how to stay safe and 'well but not overly' equipped with tonnes of gadgets dangling all over my bcd. Thank you that u make time and efforts to put up all these individual clips. So informative. I really need them. I hv lots of questions which I don't know how to ask or where to start, at the same time I don't know what I supposed to know, and u listed it in your channel. Thank you very much! God bless.

    Going to have to invest in one of those rattles with magnetic base. I had one of those Aquatec Sub-Alerts but it literally fell apart on me after a year of use (only like 16 dives since I'm in Missouri). The plastic push button literally stretched out over time and it won't even clip on anymore and I was good to keep it rinsed and stored at all times with my regulator bag. Make sure to buy a quality horn if you go that route. I was tempted by the banger but thought I might lose it so at the moment I'm using a brass double ended bolt snap that I clip to my bcd. I can use it to attach my light when I need to use my hands or I can unclip the snap and bang the tank. Worked pretty good when I was in cozumel but may not work if you are in a noisy environment with a boat running nearby.

    Great video as alway Alec. I used the pneumatic one often, i call it my "quacker" as it sounds like a duck ( unlike yours). As another person mentioned, i could not get my old one serviced at my dive shop. If you own one, you should still ALWAYS HAVE A WHISTLE, as if find yourself alone at the surface, the pneumatic horn only works while air still in tank. Also there is a FREE NOISE MAKER THAT TAKES NO ROOM IN GEAR. That free device is your hands. Hold one as if you were holding a coffee mug, and slop the top of that hand with your other hand. This works very well underwater and as an instructor I use this in the pool all the time. I also use it freediving in the ocean

      Right Ted. The pneumatic model comes in several versions. The original, the Dive Alert, was a loud scream and was designed for the surface only - to call the boat I assume. The next was the Sub Duck which emits a loud quacking sound. It carries underwater a long ways. Now there is one that does both. A simple slide switch changes it from surface scream to underwater quack. You'd be surprised at how little air they need to work. Even when you are no longer able to breath from your regulator, these horns will still work. However, a back-up is a good idea if you have a need for a diver alert device.
      As I mentioned, there is no recommended service but any decent dive store service tech ought to be able to do it for you. There are no parts required other than standard O-rings. Quite frankly, if yours does break down, try to clean it yourself. There's no harm in that. However, it is important to really rinse it well after every dive to make it last as long as possible. @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 3 lety +3

      If needed, the hilt of the knife can be banged on the tank, or your buddies head. I'm just not sold on the idea of taking out a knife and shaking it to alert someone. How would you feel hearing a shaker, turning around and a guy has a knife in his hand being you? Just saying...

    Would you advise on how to attache Dive Alert Air Horn to the type of BCD like Aqualung Soul 3i?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 6 lety +1

      It won't be easy.
      These "automatic" inflate/deflate BC valves are not new. Numerous manufacturers have introduced them as the 'Best Thing in Scuba since Clean Air' but invariably they have proven not as good in practice as in theory. Certainly they are a service nightmare. However, maybe Aqualung has solved the problem (it's not their first try!) and the 3i will be a winner.
      Your problem however is a real problem. You cannot fit a Dive Alert into the BCD hose as on a regular BC and that's too bad since the Dive Alert, while hardly a necessary piece of gear, has a proven history of reasonable reliability and there are many documented stories of its value.
      If you want to try, I suggest you work with your LDS. They could supply you with a short LP BC hose, about 4" long would do, that would fit onto the Soul 3i inflator. The Dive Alert would then go onto the open end of the short hose and finally your BCD LP hose would fit onto the top of the Dive Alert. The short hose is available if they search for it or can be made up using available adapters from Trident, Global or Omni Swivel.
      The only other way, not quite so good I think, is to have them install another LP BC hose that comes over your shoulder and connects to the Dive Alert. It can just hang there, attached of course, on your left shoulder, ready to use if necessary. The open bottom end of the Dive Alert (since it won't be attached to a BC) can be left open or they can plug it with a BC PIV spigot that's been capped.
      I hope this all helps.
      Good luck.
      Alec

      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 6 lety +2

      Many divemasters slide it up under the arm of their wetsuit. The point isn't really sharp - more like a small, rounded end.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 7 lety

      They both perform the same. One small benefit of the maraca-style, and realize there are many, large & small, plastic & metal, to choose from, is that it fastens to your gear. The tank banger goes onto a tank, usually someone else's tank, maybe a rental, and it's easy to forget about it and leave it behind. Happens all the time.

    • @MulataLinda8
      @MulataLinda8 Před 7 lety

      Alec Peirce Scuba the only thing I don't like about the rattles is that it may rattle when I don't want it do. I've seen the magnetic one, but because it's magnetic everyone into her reviews say that you have to shake harder

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 7 lety

      Ummm. The magnet holds the rattler from shaking. When you want to shake (make noise), you just pull the magnetic cap off (it's attached by a cord) and shake. No harder than another maraca-style.
      However, I suggest that divers put the maraca-style in their BC pocket attached of course to the BC with the cord. It won't make noise in the pocket.
      Want your buddy. Pull it out and shake!

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 6 lety +1

      That's another version that may work well too. We sold them for a while but discovered some of them would stop working. I think the divers weren't treating them carefully so the tube got crimped. Plus there's a chance of corrosion. They did seem to make a good, loud, distinctive sound but rinse them well after use.
      Take care.

      We sold the Storm whistle for a long time. It's a great whistle.
      It's not perfect for scuba divers although I'm not sure if a perfect whistle exists.
      The Storm whistle has a ball in it as most quality whistles do. The ball certainly doesn't work if the whistle is full of water and is it doesn't even like a little bit of water in it. So you must be sure to shake it dry before using it.
      Other dive whistles rely on the shape of the whistle and escape vent so they don't need a ball.
      I don't have a beef against whistles. They just don't work too well in the scuba environment. Particularly in the north where we have on thick rubber gloves. We can't always find the whistle easily, we can't hold it properly and we can't always blow with frozen lips.
      Better than nothing though!

    funny a fish rattle, dosent anyone tap their tank with their knife pommel or butt anymore ?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před 7 lety +3

      Oh yeah. But it isn't that easy in cold waters with thick suits, thick gloves, hoods, etc.
      And, a little thought for some older divers, the practice of rapping on the tank doesn't work so well with aluminum tanks. Steel tanks used to ring out like a bell. Aluminum tanks are pretty dull-sounding.
      Still works though.
      Thanks for watching.

      I can vouch for tank-bangers not working well on aluminum. Last month I was diving with my brother and my weight belt slipped and slid down around my knees! We were only five or six feet apart, but between our thick cold-water hoods, the noise of a ferry coming in to the dock 500 feet away, and the sound of his own breathing, he never heard my tank banger. Fortunately he's very conscientious about frequent buddy checks, and he realized quickly that I wasn't following him anymore and came back to help me. I'm going to get us each a rattle for now, but I'm looking into underwater horns and even electronic/ultrasonic communicators. (I'm also going to get a harness/suspenders for my weight belt; a thick wetsuit compresses so much at depth that it's hard to keep it tight.)

  • @jjnxyz4368
    @jjnxyz4368 Před měsícem

    Stick with your guide, don't make everyone have to listen to a noise maker just because you saw a fish... I would never use one underwater... Have trouble, head up, don't have problems... Shut up and let us enjoy the dive.
    The bc beep is actually useful if in trouble but tank slappers and shakers are often misused and are annoying on a dive.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  Před měsícem

      My suggestion is if the last dive was "loud" with bangers, ask the guide/DM to say "only if never seen by a human before" can you bang. Otherwise, quiet is better.
