Wolf mother where you been?
You look so worn, so thin
You're a taker, Devil's maker
Let me hear you sing
Heyya heyya
Wolf father at the door
You don't smile anymore
You're a drifter, shapeshifter
Now let me see you run
Heyya heyya
Holy light, oh guard the night
Oh keep the spirits strong
Watch her grow, child of woe oh
Keep holding on
When I ran through the deep dark forest long after this begun
When the sun would set, the trees were dead and the rivers were none
And I hoped for a trace to lead me back home from this place
But there was no sound, there was only me, and my disgrace
Hey hey hey, hey hey

Johan Söderberg, who is not related to the two First Aid Kit sisters, directed the song's music video. It was filmed, "in the deep dark forest of Järvsö, Hälsingland." The Söderberg sisters explained: "It's about our destruction of the planet, but it's also about finding the animal within you. Because we know that underneath that polished, civilized exterior there is definitely a wild creature longing to howl or roar."
This ballad was extracted from Hemliga bok i den stora mörka skogen (The Secret Book of the Great Dark Forest), a 359 parchment pages rare volume presently displayed in the Nordic Museum in Djurgården and believed to date back from the mid 16th century. According to the Swedish mythology, several wolves entered into an agreement with the underground creature Vittra to seduce humans into venturing through the great forest at night by singing strange songs. The few human who followed the wolves into the darkness got lost in vast expanse of swamps where they had to confront their own past, and for some of them, their disgrace, while Vittra, the underground creature, slowly crawled out to meet each of them.
Lol wow you are awesome
Wow that's awesome. o.o I have always loved the myths especially with wolves lol
Vittror always reminded me of Domovoi I'd hear of as a kid. They're not to be treated horribly or taken for granted, that is for sure.
I'd really like to read it, shame I can't find an English version anywhere.
2208wojtek thank you,I read it all
The pagan anthem we didn’t know we needed
What’s crazy is that when I heard this song for the first time, I really imagined a bonfire in the middle of the woods and people in animal masks gathering around and dancing to this song, the leaves on the trees are turning orange and it’s midnight, the song just echoing throughout the hills, so dark, so mysterious yet beautiful all at the same time, I’m very happy to see the actual video being so close to what I pictured in my head. I love how Witchy this feels, makes me want to dress up in old clothes like that and twirl around in a forest somewhere! Lol
This was my experience too! A lot of their songs have a very “Pegan or Wiccan “ feel to them. I think they might dabble in the arts 😉
every witchway
Really random, but watch Full Metal Alchemist and about two thirds through there is a bonfire scene that this song immediately reminded me of before watching the video and reading your comment.
I literally listened to this on repeat for like, an hour
certainly a little bit more Hey, Hey-Hey, Hey, Hey

Heyaa
I always say that Sweden produces amazing musicians.
I don't know how they do it, but it's amazing how many of its musicians are way above average!
We thank you for your kind words.
True winter is the key.
It’s one word simplicity; looking at ace of base and abba and all of them. Simple and to the point no fluff.
@@bluegoat6323 Not really. Abba is complex sonic stuff , ace of base (Not really liked in Sweden) also. First Aid Kit too. The thing that pushes Sweden into the forefront of music that people like to hear is harmonics and melodys. We have a natural knock of it because of the stron traditions of folk music . Ii goes into all sorts of Swedish production. Heavy metal, pop, Rock, electronica, folk music, classic. Its a consitent formular that brought Swedish produced music out in the world. All hail to Abba, the first swedish group that got a proper break through on the international scene, and the rest followed in the wake.
@@Funkywallot vad bra !! i think simplicity is still the reason.
Every other year or so I stumble upon a song and it goes like this...
I listen to it for the first time and it catches my attention. There's something special there: a groove, a rhythm, a note that makes my ears go a-ha!
I listen to it for the second time and the a-ha becomes a wow! There's clearly something gripping me.
Then I listen to the song for a third time and I am suddenly overcome with emotion. The lyrics hit home. The melody sweeps me off my feet. I read into it an intensity that I can't control.
The third time happened this morning as I was making breakfast. By the time the song got to "Where the sun would set, trees were dead and the rivers were none" tears were streaming uncontrollably down my cheeks. My children came down for breakfast and I couldn't stop hugging them all the while covering my face so they wouldn't have to see that their dad was crying for no reason.
There's a magic feeling of wild, of loss, of death and resilience in this song. Where did it all come from? How did you make up words as beautiful as "the rivers were none"? Where is the wolf now?
I love your story. This song also caught my attention when I first stumbled upon this group a few weeks ago. I wish I had found them much sooner. Alas, I didn't.
This reminds me of when I first found it, I was just scrolling through CZcams, then found this and I was like “Nioce” then awhile later I’m crying because I can feel this little connection with it, it’s amazing
Played this video for my mom who's an old hippy gypsy from the 70s and she said "whoa, this reminds me of stuff from my generation!" The next day I let her borrow my Lion's Roar vinyl and she loved it. I just made you a new fan and guess what? We're going to your San Francisco Fall date together! High-five to bands parents & daughters can enjoy together!
listen good people, this is what real music sounds like
I know this comment is a year old but I agree with you my friend
Yes ! This is amazing song ! Really can enjoy it
indeed
I like it but insinuating in any shape or form that there's such a thing as "real music" is incredible elitist imho. Sure you probably just meant that you like it a lot more than most anything else, but that's not what you wrote :)
"THiS Is ReAl MuSIc" yeah i don't think any of you are aware of how pretentious you are
I feel my spirit come alive when I listen to this magical song. I've always felt a very deep connection to nature and wolves, so this is near perfect to me.
+Django Makepeace I feel the same, this song is an old favorite.
You should read wolves boys and other things that might kill me then it's a really good book
+Jayde_ _Bear OMFG OMFG OMFG OMDG OMFG OMFG ONFG OMFG DUDE I HAVE THAT BOOK! I FUCKING LOVE BOOK KRISTEN CHANDLER IS AMAZING

I'm a metal guy, but occasionally I come across a song like this, and I just know it's not going anywhere, good stuff!

This is beautiful, dark, and melancholic. I love it!
Not only do the Swedish have the best metal bands... but apparently, the best pop acts as well. This is transcendent 💙
Hell yeah 🤘🏼
Metal and Pop music has always been where Swedish musicians have shined and excelled the most. ABBA 70s, Roxette in the 80s and early 90s. Ace of Base hit machine in the 90s. Cheiron Studios in Sweden (Max Martin, Denniz Po's studio) was the epicentre of pop music in the mid to late 90s. Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys etc and pretty much every big act flocked to that place to record or have songs written/produced at that studio - they never failed to create hits at that place. Swedes who played metal/hårdrock in the 1980s such as Max Martin became extremely influental in the international pop scene "Martin is the songwriter with the third-most number-one singles on the chart, behind only Paul McCartney (32) and John Lennon (26)."
I'm apparently very late in discovering these two for myself. Off to buy their catalog and begin the immersion.
Life becomes much brighter when young musicians like these two exceptional talents come about.
daflotsam do u know if they make new music
I'm 4 years behind you. They're just brilliant
Hope your journey is going well
I've just found them today, 12th April 2022...WOW...I've been in the wilderness for so long, just coming up for some air after a difficult last few years... They have truly uplifted my spirits...

I used to love running through the forest with my two dogs ,many years ago ,don’t know why but it felt so great ,jumping streams running through the woods with my beautiful friends .Great video fantastic song .
that sounds amazing
Sounds like heaven
I advise everyone who lives near nature. To download this song on your phone, go outside, and just run around or do something. It's almost entrancing to do, TRUST ME! ;D
I did that..I fell asleep in the woods
+Channel Gummybear i totally agree. my new year's resolution envolves start running and i guess i found the perfect group to listen to while doing it.
I live in the woods and I downloaded this and was walking around in the woods listening to this
it sounds really great. I've Just found this song and for me as a nature lover ı cant wait runnig around the trees with this music in my ears
+Doğuhan Açılan I have never owned anything more than an autoharp. I learned about First Aid Kit, Johanna and Klara, searching for autoharp performers. You all could enjoy the autoharp.
my favorite song of all the time 😌🎤❤️
I really loved this song when I was younger. I deliberately for years put off learning the actual authorial intent of the creators because I enjoyed reading it from a native perspective. The emphasis on the land and seeing the father and mother described as tired and sad- Hell even the lines about the devil lend well to a native reading. This meant a lot to me as some lonely Navajo kid growing up in a hella urban space.
I don't think you can spend real time in vastness of the wilds without being touched by the spirit of the land. These girls have touched that spirit.
Beautiful voices, beautiful girls, beautiful songs, everything beautiful and passionate.
Work and luck. Thank you for the opportunity to hear them.
!!!!!! LONG LIVE THE STARKS OF WINTERFELL!!!
May the wolves forever Reign in the NORTH!
Yeah, good luck for them...

My friend Aimee loved this this song. Sadly she passed away yesterday. A beautiful pagan spirt who will ever be present around those who loved her. ❤
i grew up on this song. forgot about it for a while, i’m so glad i’ve finally found it after all these years.
Sweden keeps on surprising me in the quality and diversity of music coming out years after years... I like this song
I leave my soul here. It doesn't need anything different.

There is strange magic that this song has captured. Love First aid kit
Brings a damn tear to my eye....
This song is so amazing, so witchy, I'm obsessed. I'm swedish and I've listened to some of their songs for years but decided it's time to dig deeper and they're becoming one of my favs!
this song has had me in a chokehold for about 7 years now.
I'm currently pulling an all nighter for uni revision and this band is literally helping me through it. So thank you FAK

I'm pretty sure the plant garland around their heads is of the species Linnaea borealis, aka twinflower. This was Carl Linnaeus' (inventor of the modern system of naming species in biology) favourite plant, because of its beauty.

This vid is 10 y-o. I have known The Silver Lining for years, but I've wasted so many years without hearing their other songs. Incredible talent.
One of the very current bands that actually have talent. There music just takes you deep in the woods with a feeling of being alive.

First My Silver Lining in Tales From the Borderlands, now this in TWD Michonne, someone at Telltale has great taste in music.
MetallicaRules shame they can’t make good stories anymore
I knew this song before TellTale's TWD: Michonne-mini series, but it was still a great surprise, to hear this in the credits of the first episode!
Nice name
you want some pie, dean?
Eric Danielson from Watain recommended this. Cool stuff.
Was hoping to find this comment here

Anyone else think these guys are like modern day 70 's hippies?
They're like a female Simon and Garfunkel.
no, I think they are people who really like to see the spirits in animals
Kevin O'Hare I don't think their being like hippies is bad. It's cool that they have their own style.
I've always thought them as being a modern classic country/folk band,
nope, are they singing about skinwalkers?

I love this song. It's just so calming and free... Just a beautiful tale of... Freedom and Hardship... Beautiful...
Still feeling that spirit flowing into this realm ⭐

Song Writers Rejoice. These young women are simply great!
Truly outstanding
Saw these girls and the band live a couple of weeks ago and it was the most beautiful show ever. The music and most of all their voices was amazing. They are so talented. Love from your home country! 😊
God I can't get enough of this song or this band! Amazing!!
To those wondering, it's clearly a nature focused pagan Viking song from some very talented Swedish sisters. :) Kidding. I don't know what it's about but its beautiful!
Laugh, but I think it's about a broken family that was no longer supportive of their children. The whole mama wolf and papa wolf motive... The papa wolf being described as "not smiling anymore" and a "drifter, shapeshifter", and "running away". The "holy idol guarding the night" thing is, IMHO, the mama wolf keeping up hope, and "keeping a light on" for the papa wolf, while struggling on her own. The lyrics about the dying, haunted forest is about the family or home falling apart.
Just my opinion, though. :-))
About the only thing that seems "viking" to me in the song or the vid are the mentions of wolves, and the sun setting fast and the trees in the forest seemingly dying. That kind of sounds like something out of an old folk tale, the rest, not really. I do like the little graphical effects with the "wolf face", though. Pretty cool.
Erik from Watain brought me here... really nice song
I Love these two sisters
WOW! They are incredible and very refreshing. Real music for a change. I am buying there album on ITunes when I get paid and I only do that about twice a year. Thank you First Aid Kit for the music you are making.
As a Canadian I can confirm this. Also, these girls are amazing. Thank you Sweden.
I 've lost count on how many times I've watched this. Wonderful.

Thank you Ellen for being able to identify true talent! Love this!
they have such beautiful voices
these two..I will never tire of them
Perfect song.
I LOVE YOUR SOUND FIRST AID KIT! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! IT'S LIKE WITCHY COUNTRY MUSIC AND I AM IN SHEER BLISS LISTENING!
Why this wasn't part of the Wolfwalkers soundtrack is really a mystery to me.
It makes perfect since but I feel like they would have done the same thing they did to “running with wolves” they played such a tiny amount of the song.
Im an underground hip hop / horrorcore rap artist from the US that has no shame in playing this song as loud as possible every day on my morning commute. a masterpiece of sound an imagery. much love from the US!! salute!!
okay, Telltale never disappoint me with their chosen soundtracks.

I learned about First Aid Kit from a fan fiction story. Great music.
Once in a decade comes a song that transfixes me. That I simply can't stop listening to. This is it.
I'm a metal head with a penchant for cabaret. But damn do I love this song.
That... was a very trenchant observation.
Well done.
I really didn't see this comment coming. 😂
Same here. Played and listened to metal a very long time. Don't play now but still listen everyday. Check out Grima's "The Moon and it's Shadows." First Aid Kit is one of those few off metal bands that could be metal if there were some distorted guitars. But I'm glad they haven't done that. Their sound is unique and refreshing.
They have such a old timey type amazing harmony 🔥
This song came on pandora while I was riding. Opened my horse up as fast as he can go. At that speed you don't feel his hooves touching the ground just a rocking motion. If you close your eyes you feel like you are flying. The song fit so perfectly with that experience.
Einfach nur wild..beste mucke ever ;)
Love their music
This is my favourite song it is so beautiful!
This is the best song I've heard in a long while. The sisters Söderberg' voices bring me to tears at times. This is as fresh as it gets. X Peace!
I like how the song has a native American influence
