There is talk of giving the northern area back to the aboriginals and closing it to the public so want to do this walk before the closer. Steel balls like that around 2m in diameter were used as submarine net floats during the war in your neighbour country, but they had a big ring on one side securely welded on. Not sure what that could be. Industrial fishing float of some type, maybe. The difference between a steel float like that and a rubber one with air inside is that when the rubber one is dragged under at some point it compresses to nothing and ceases to float much. But the steel one will maintain its buoyancy until a very deep depth indeed.
