- This is the story of Mazda's surprising victory in 1991 at Le Mans and the road to it. With competitors obviously quicker, the Mazda 787B constantly ran more reliable and won their first and Japan's first Le Mans victory, this is the full story of the road to victory for Mazda at Le Mans

Racing is not always about speed. Reliability and consistency will beat out speed in most any race. With speed comes higher horse power which will lower reliability drastically. Especially a 24hrs race. Great video!!
Thing of beauty with a Hollywood ending.
Yes , the Mazda 787B driven by Johnny Herbert , Volker Weidler & Bertrand Gachot with the dedicated Mazda Factory Engineers & Technicians helped won the 1991 Le Mans 24Hour Race >>> a Win for All Underdogs out there! 🙏 Thank You So Much Formula Jonah for making this Tribute to the 1991 Le Mans 24Hour Champion Mazda 787B in just 8 minutes tutorial ... 🌷🌿🌏💜🕊
I saw and hear this car at the Le Mans Classic last summer and my god does this thing scream. During one of it's three run I at having dinner at a campsite in the middle of the circuit and I could hear it screaming around the circuit.
At Le Mans '91, there were two types of cars - 3.5 liter "new" Group C, and fuel consumption-limited "old" Group C. The 3.5 liter cars were unsorted, and based on F1 engines, and they were very unlikely to last.
All the "old' Group C cars were hit with roughly 150 KG weight penalties - except the Mazda, which due to its "dark horse" status, was not assessed a weight penalty by the ACO. That had a lot to do with their victory. Even beyond speed, reducing 300 lb in a prototype is going go substantially reduce wear and tear.
What a nice coincidence!! Earlier this week I had a chance to talk to our Macau sponsor David Kennedy, who was a key contributor to Mazda’s Le Mans success and actually drove the other 787B in 1991.
Wow that’s awesome! I bet that was great to chat about it.
@@FormulaJonah You bet! He was a great storyteller. Talking about racing, he puts heavy emphasis on finding the talent and orchestrating the team dynamics.
Nice video. These history videos are a nice edition to the channel.
For me it’s the sound & looks of this car that gripped me at first. Then the win made it look so much cooler
787b he is the boi
the cool sounding boi
Truly one of the great underdog stories. 1991 should always be remembered as the year where David slew Goliath(s) and Le Mans.
I'd say Rondeau's win was more impressive than 1991 in terms of giant killing.
@@marks7197 Fair point, but fewer factory teams competed in 1980.
@@landonmarcovici8799 That's true, but the Joest Martini , Porsche Ickx was driving certainly had works backing and the private 935's all were very strong particularly over the distance. I just think of this... Jean Rondeau's team built a car from scratch in just 4 years and he drove it himself to victory (and the ballasted sister car 3rd/1st in GTP). Mazda is still a manufacturer at the end of the day and had over 10 years of le mans experience before it fortuitously found an advantage in 1991.
Always loved this car! Excellent video!
Could've changed their team name from mazda speed to mazda strong 💪😂
Great video, really enjoyed it even though I’ve heard this story many times.Could you please do more videos about Group C?Preferably about more unknown or less known cars like the KM-011,or the Gebhardt C91
Glad you enjoyed, and yes absolutely! I’m working on two Group C History videos, so expect a lot more content on the Group C entries!
@@FormulaJonah Very happy to hear it,keep up the great work :))
To finish first, first you have to finish
Exactly!
It’s the best looking car from that year, some people liked the Jaguar but I really don’t think it’s close.
She is sooo sooo beautiful!!!! That's it.
even I'm mostly interested in open-wheelers, an opportunity to cooperate with Jonah gives me a chance to explore some of the greatest racing cars. Mazda 787B was a real surprise for me and much enjoyable. Highly recommended to everyone, give Assetto Corsa a try and you will be amazed!
Awesome work.
Bro the way you say leman cracks me up
A Bradbury moment.
Its funny how rotary engines are notoriously known for lack of reliability, but yet, this car beat everyone by being the most reliable during the race.
😢no LMdH from Mazda😢
Unfortunately not yet
It is odd they would ban the rotary engine, but then let diesel engines run years later.
Not one mention of the ridiculous weight restrictions imposed on Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar that made them uncompetitive... Those teams ballasted to 1000kg compared to the Mazda which was allowed to run at 830kg made Jaguar run at a slower pace than the win the year before for fuel economy, 2nd, 3rd and 4th a good result considering. I'm all for slow and steady winning in endurance races but only on a level playing field.
This video is about Mazda, so not enough space to fit that fact into this video. That topic will have to be saved for a future video. Thanks for watching!
@@FormulaJonah Why let simple facts 'about the Mazda' get in the way of the fanboys adulation...
It was just a decision I made when I did the video a few months ago. But as I mentioned if I have another video related to this one, then I will include the fact
@@FormulaJonah You explained to that other I... t your reasons and that's fair enough. Please don't feel obliged to justify yourself again. Thanks for an enjoyable video
The Mazda also had to run a smaller fuel tank than the Group C cars
Mazda pushed out because they didn't represent the "effete european model"
