@@erikosterlund1997 Meeting new people, new worlds, and many ideas can really change a person's view in life. Especially when it's something that interests them like nothing they used to do.
THIS
My girlfriend is an English major and loves deciphering the meaning behind videos/songs like these: she says the deduction is that the artist gains from the fan just as much as the fan gains from the artist. He utilizes masks and other forms of performance & disassociation to exemplify that the relationship between the two is one where both parties gain something, but they aren't able to work together cohesively because there is ultimately a disconnect between both worlds. Even though the "cheerleader" is inserted into his world, it is all artificially done and neither the real artist nor the fan are ever able to coexist together. She eats the candy that looks like Porter at the beginning, then he eats her, then at the end she eats the candy resembling him again. It's a cycle of consuming each others' content. She consumes his art, and he consumes her validation and/or praise. Porter went pretty deep with this one.
Well put, ty for sharing :)
would you say this is a song about parasocial relationships or do you think this goes beyond that? 100% the influence can be focused on that parasocial relationship with the fan just like fans can be with the influencer
This type of reciprocal relationship is key to the best artists' live performances. It elevates the experience for both the audience and the artist and creates the atmosphere most people desire from live performances.
thinking about the fan doll version that got stepped on
@@zachi2fox246 Probably has themes like that too, first thing that came to my mind as well

めっちゃくちゃ世界観が可愛いし曲も素敵
When I watch this music video I see a Porter Robinson that is fully confident in himself, looking directly into a camera and singing. We are truly in a new era of Porter Robinson.
i totally agree!!!
My theory is he's calling the viewer his cheerleader when he looks into the camera. Seems to me this is a love song about his fans
I little too confident homie pleasure himself himself and I feel unsettled
@@Thundaga5It seems a little darker than that to me. I think the song is a little more about parasociality and the way people project very strong emotions onto him. He uses words like "addicted" and phrases like " don't know where to draw the line" and "If you're not mine I'd rather see you burned alive." I read it as touching on the way that his fans take his music, which is by nature very personal, and develop an air of possessiveness about it and him by extension. He does love and appreciate his fans and I do think that comes through in the song, but I also think he's touching on a more nuanced aspect of the artist-fan relationship.
@@scaw-jI think it also applies to a lot of online stuff in general, not just himself. The way people develop para-social relationships with streamers, content creators, celebs and OF models etc.
any other long term fans sobbing right now? I remember porter didn't really want his own voice on his tracks without editing and correct me if I'm wrong but I think he dealt with self image struggles. to see him like this is so jarring in the absolute best way. from Language to this is an insane life arc. I'm so proud of him.
Spot on, even on Nurture he admitted on songs like Blossom why he used the filters and turned it off when saying "I love you" to his now wife. To hear him so confidently and unfiltered-ly singing is joy beyond words.
I was damn near a day one fan of Porter early 2011 saw him with Zedd and Skrillex on the Scary Monsters tour and was blown away. Saw him a few more times and then the style changed. I respect his art and talent but I just can't get into what he has done the last like 7-8 years tbh. I got to see a show of his where it was full of the Language album that never got to come out and got erased and I wish we had gotten full releases of that. All that being said I will continue to follow him, listen when new music drops, but I won't be going to any shows anymore unless I happen to be close to one of his rare DJ sets these days.
Sounds like good self growth :) Though, to play devil's advocate, I'm 99% sure there is autotune and such used here as well as who knows what else in terms of plug-ins etc. Not that that is bad or anything of course! :3 I'm glad he's utilizing his voice more often. The effects he puts on his voice in order to sound like a girlbot is super cool.
YEAH im so unbelievably happy for him n proud of how far he's come
it makes me so happy to know he is happy.
Today my world is forever changed because I learned that Porter Robinson is both a punk rocker and a weeb.
What about this is punk? Def more emo and pop than anything
This is the kinda thing most emo bands wish they had made
I agree about the emo elements but this is also very fitting for a pop punk sound :)
@@yeidisworld I guess yeah the more I listen the more I hear it. It’s quite the mish mash of genre stuff tbh.
Never heard a synth rip through a pop punk style tune like this
@@krusher181 I don’t think I have either! It’s nostalgic but also very fresh 🫶🏼
love the little amen break samples as a nod to his harder stuff
“I want stop motion! And karaoke! Anime masks! Scott Pilgrim vibes, gotta have 2000s pop-punk! Godzilla! Vore! Choreographed mass dance numbers!”
“I dunno Porter, I’m not sure you can fit all those concepts into a single album-“
“PUT IT IN THE FIRST SINGLE OR YOU’RE FIRED”
possibly the greatest thing i've read today
I heard this in Benson's voice for some reason
ME TOO
You know this music video has a director and an entire, dedicated creative team behind it, right? It's not all Porter's ideas most certainly. I think most of these ideas were first pitched to Porter if anything.
@@Healibordjust a joke homie
Porter moving from introspective songs about musical insecurity into a maximalist song about obsessive fan-musician parasocial relationships goes so hard dude. This might be his best song I love it so much
He went from aggressive EDM to beautiful and nostalgic music style, then now passed on from that to becoming some pop-ish artist I guess lol.
@@jamieagnad1918 I feel like that last part might be a bit oversimplifying this. Listening to this, I'm getting elements of Get Your Wish, Language and even stuff like Everything Goes On, it's definitely very signature Porter (especially that ending) with a pop-punk filter put over it. Making a throwback pop song about mentally reckoning with the obsessive nature of some of his audience in the internet age makes so much sense and still feels v authentic to him.
@@jamieagnad1918 From Spitfire to Sad Machine and now this, gotta love the guy.
I feel like many artists get caught in a trap of never feeling free to experiment.
It's pretty clear that Porter is not one of them, having multiple aliases under which he makes different types of must, and even Porter himself, where his albums are so diverse...
I think this is a good thing, even if sometimes new things don't "land" the same way you remember.

Porter’s next era of music is like a digital artist’s equivalent of freedom. He is no longer bound by any rules.
genreless
He hasn't been since the Spitfire EP. That was the entire point of his break and rebrand. He's one of the few artists who consistently reinvents his style with every major release. Worlds, Nurture, and Virtual Self are all very distinct from one another & I'm sure the next album will be the same way. It's part of what makes coming back to him again and again so exciting.
What “rules” is he breaking here, dont get me wrong i love it but its not some mind bending composition its just good fucking music
@@wispy893 well people want him to stay one genre, virtual self, spit fire, or worlds
I think its more like, he can release pretty much anything and he'd still have people to listen, just because of how many times he's switched his style ig, and thats very freeing for an artist@@wispy893

Been a fan since 2010, and I feel called out 😭 Being a young fangirl really was a time for me, latching onto the artists I liked to deal with life’s problems, I didn’t think at the time how being so obsessive would affect the artist, and I won’t lie, when Porter got more popular I definitely gatekept and felt a little upset for reasons I couldn’t put my finger on. The internet was a wild place in 2010, but as everything progressed, and as I grew up it was nice to hear the music change too. The fans that have stuck around have grown up now and appreciate the new sound and every new project and hopefully like me have learned boundaries between fan and artist

I have a two year old daughter. Since she came home from the hospital, I have played Porter Robinson in the background. She always wants to "Dance daddy come here!" And dance all day to these songs. She is napping now, but I cannot wait to show her this song. We play Musician daily so this may be the new daily song!
I have a four month old son I sing Blossom to nightly as I rock him to sleep. We were down between Jackson and Porter for his name. [I voted Porter haha].
None of this would have happened without your music. I was going to attempt suicide years ago, I was seconds from acting... but I atopped. I was a wreck and I turned to your music. I got help, saw a therapist, and now here I am. I am too blessed. I have a great career, I am set to graduate with my masters degree this fall and returning for my phD after, have a supportive spouse, and I couldn't ask for more. My life is truly special now. My class ring I have engraved "Oh I'll dream of you" reference to Wind Tempos, those words always have stuck with me after my daughter was born.
I was able to play an extra in a movie on Amazon Prime called A State of Mind. I am a doctor in the movie and the smallest role, but to be able to get through my mental health issues and be a part of a movie based on mental health issues...wow. Humbling and I could not believe it.

Porter Robinsons songs tend to be better every time you listen to them and understand the meaning behind them
It makes sense too, he's always focused on vocal melody, VERY important in pop-punk, but pop punk wasn't trending as much as EDM when he started, so he's revisiting his earlier inspo!

Instant Classic
Known you since highschool when my friend introduced me to you, you're so incredibly inspired and talented and it shows. You deserve all the praise you get
I think this song is about parasocial relationships. Cheerleader being used as another word for fangirl/fanboy/stan/etc. the first verse having lines such as “she’s addicted. obsessed like “i know i can fix him”” and “she draws me kissing other guys” are the type of things an obsessive fan would do
"she draws me kissing other guys" is such a raw line, i feel like a lot of girls just got called out for that one
Also makes sense given most of the video. Having a bunch of posters of Porter on the wall, there being multiple cheerleaders who chase him around, him crowdsurfing at one point like you would at a show.
@@PhysicsBella yea exactly. i’d be really surprised if it wasn’t at least somewhat about it

@@ab.6223it’s a very queer moment and I’m just gonna let it be queer and not about an obsessive fan 🤪
i think this song is about the obsessive nature of internet fandoms, and the "cheerleader" character is the embodiment of all of this "internet love".
He used to find it strange, and he felt like the online world "needed" him. But during the hiatus between Worlds and Nurture, he realised he actually depended on the internet for validation and love. Porter thought the fans needed him, but he came to realise he was the one that needed them. "I thought she needed me, but I need her."
That's my interpretation. Such a banger.
That's what i think. Porter wouldnt write such a cliche song without deeper meaning
idk if it's cliche. it's definitely got some clear pop sensibilities but it's extremely hard to make something so compelling without any pretense and with so much honesty@@carlvargas7911
@@k_nito7954 that's an entirely different era and genre of music....
I guess what i saw in the trailer is porter got sick and tired of these porter robinson ripoff songs and leaks particually against worlds song idk
I think its a juxtaposition, both about the toxic overbearing sides of it, but also how he needs their support. He is definitely not promoting the obsession but realises he is nothing without his fanbase and their healthy form of support.

Same here!
Incredible. I watched your Fantano interview and I remember you saying Musician was your favorite in Nurture (mine too) and that you wanted to be in that invulnerable place more often while making music. I can't help but feel like this is exactly what you meant. I have liked all the music you have made but I think you have reached a totally new level.
im SO hyped for this new album
Lyric breakdown from genius (RachaelPalmer): "After the final bridge, the chorus takes on a different meaning. While the first few iterations of the chorus were implied to be spoken by the cheerleader/fans, this final chorus is being spoken from the perspective of the artist/Porter. Flipping the meaning of the song on its head, the final chorus is about the artist’s love for their fans - how much they mean to the artist, and how they have dedicated their life to their fans."
So good
Its like a lyrical ambigram, so nuts!
no thanks!
2:35 That soft guitar bridge though😩😩
Easily thr best part. I hope he releases an acoustic version like Blossom
yess🥺💖
I CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO THIS SONG WTF
Holy shit, I remember listening to goodbye to a world on repeat during elementary-middle school.. Despite being my breakdown song, it got me through some really tough times. Immediately seeing a new song by Porter Robinson, all those memories flooded back but this made me look back on those times and smile, seeing how much I've changed since then, and how he has changed since that time too. This song made me realize that things get better.
LETS GOOOOO
Yeahhhhhhhhh
Xd, que random verte aqui
aparte de hacer buenas conexiones tienes buenos gustos
I can’t describe this feeling like it’s like I’m back in high school watching these types of music videos with creative freedom
This makes me feel like I'm back in 2006 it's wild
So excited to scream this at the concert

Friday, October 17th, 2014 at the House of Blues in Orlando: I randomly picked up a flyer on the UCF parking garage floor that said “Porter Robinson: WORLDS”. To even begin to try to explain how my life has changed since that night… it’s not possible. Here YOU are, Porter Robinson. Holy crap. Worlds changed my life and allowed me to have a brighter look on life right after leaving all of my friends in California to start college. I carpooled random strangers to your show in orlando in 2014, and have seen you 32/33 times now. This song is by far your best and proudest work. Your fan base loves the shxt out of you, as you express in this song. Thank you for giving us everything you have while maintaining your light. You are a pure, genuine artist. I am so thankful to have found that flyer on the floor that one lonely evening. Thank you Porter.
seeing Worlds live was truly like being in another world. you can’t even explain it. idk about you, but I was lucky enough to see it outdoors. so happy to see that his music changed your life for the better!! 💙
Worlds was such a great album. I listen to it to this day all the time.
aww
I was at that show at the House of Blues. It was my first electronic music show and one of my first live music shows ever. I had no idea what I was walking into other than I was obsessed with Worlds and I knew the show was entirely his music. That night completely changed my opinion of live electronic music and what it could be.
edm, pop punk, I swear this man can make anything
eeyup
@@SunIsLostthe last thing i expected to see as a reply was a bigmac reference
Uhm, "pop punk"? What did he do that would be considered pop punk?
I'm so glad you get to express yourself with every song! I was here on your Bataclan concert in Paris and I feel like you are really livin' your life the way you want, and I love what you do on a deep level! thx
Props to Porter Robinson for always having the best music videos
This is exactly how music videos should've stayed since 2010.
I love the old pixelated images, the hints to the old music videos era and... HOW YOU'RE NOW SINGING WITH YOUR UNSMAKED VOICE 😭😭
Porter Robinson truly said "Fuck it" and I'm happy for him
Been a while since I've had a song on repeat for days. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album, this is going to be amazing!
I got emotional watching this. I feel like I can relate too, in the sense that when nurture came out I was very much in the same headspace as those songs and I’ve come out of that now and I feel like mentally I’m moving on and becoming more confident. I’m so freakin happy to see Porters confidence and creativity shining
I was having a REALLY BAD DAY. Then i opened CZcams and saw this. I put my headphones on, then when ''its not fair'' rocked up, i really started crying. Thank you, Porter.

I have a feeling Porter and the crowds are really gonna enjoy jamming to this song at concerts ^^
That lead in the drop is so addicting
Funny to see how Porter's music is moving towards late-2000 music era and yet it's still super fresh and amazing 🤯
すごいよほんと

I hope he sings in Japan for you.

this feels like it could be a huge mainstream sleeper hit this coming summer. i have been wrong about songs like this in the past but i could see this song blowing up all over top 40 by june\july and being one of those songs you hear everywhere you go. not saying thats a good or bad thing just saying that is my gut feeling :P
THIS IS RAD!!! That last minute especially is just unreal ✨⚡️
He really went full "anime boy" for this one. And I'm loving it!
This is something MTV would have broadcast in 2000
fr!
Now we’ll be lucky if this amazing single even makes a blip in the mainstream.
