Hydraulic Press (brake) DIY - 12 ton??

  • Oh NO!! Yet an other hydraulic press DIY video on YT? Yes, I just needed an hydraulic press/press brake for other projects so I've built one, and filmed the process to make kind of a tutorial.
    This hydraulic press is made, as many others you may find on youtube, around a jack bottle capable to raise up to 6 ton of weight. So this press should make a pressure up to 6 ton (provided the stated value is real), but the frame could be capable of handling up to 12 ton, with reinforced weldings on the top of the frame (in the video they are not).
    The pressure defined in ton is a jargon to indicate the equivalent weight it can hold (or press), but this leads to a lot of potential misunderstanding and mistakes because it should be accounted in pascal or in kg per sqared meter (or in psi for you imperial guys). This will be discussed better in a next video, and the link will be placed here, and since I do not post at a regular pace if you want to not miss it consider to subscribe and click the bell icon to be notified when the video will be up.

    The card at 17:36 has a load of typos, in a single word it is wrong. Sorry, I apologize.
    1) the strength is expressed in MPa (not MPa/sqmm); 2) the multiplication of the area by the pressure (176.7sqmm * 240MPa) gives Newtons (N) and not megaPascals (MPa); 3) the gravitational acceleration is 9.81 [m s2] and not 9.88.
    Also after a review making the video where I show the calculations made to have an idea of the strength of the structure I've noticed a further error: the weakest point are the upper welded joints, not the pins. Give a look at the video: czcams.com/video/H16yf2bjdoI/video.html

    Great Job I like your press, let me do just 2 observations about your weld :
    1) I see that you have som tiny hole on your weld : What rod diameter that your weld you use a 4 or 3mm rod ? because I usaly weld this type of metal width with 4 mm rod but i move slower than you and follow the bath -> i get 99% time perfect weld without the need to grind weld.
    2) Save your lungs -> Find an old vacum cleaner extract turbine put it in a water proof box outside put flex pipe and extractor dangerous fumes from your garage !
    Thanks for sharing with us your work !

    • @AccidentalScience
      @AccidentalScience  Před 2 lety +1

      I use 2.5 or 3 mm rods. The problem was with the welding machine that was designed to work on a 60Hz grid while here in Europe we have 50. After this video I bought a new inverter machine that allows me to get far better results. About fumes I have a fan that pushes fresh air from another room and the garage door is always open when I weld. This is not visible on camera though. Thanks for your comment.

    I`m trying to work it out in Psi so that I`ll know exactly how to do the welding of mine. Tensile strength and others are also given Psi in some countries....

    • @AccidentalScience
      @AccidentalScience  Před rokem

      If you watch the follow up video you'll get easier data to convert in psi. Tons is a jargon to call pressure expressed in kg/mm2 or better in KN/mm2, since pressure should be expressed in MPa. So for example here I calculated 170KN of maximum force (given the effective area subject to the force exerted by the hydraulic jack, which by the way is not capable to deliver). From there you can calculate the pressure in psi: divide the force in KN [kilo newton] by a square inch in metres: 25.4mm(per sqi) = 645mm2. Divide 170KN / 0.645 = 264MPa [mega pascal]. Now let's convert MPa into psi [pound per sqi] wich gives 38290 psi.
      Et voilà! 🙂
      Oh, another little detail. Hydraulic jack sold in Europe, where psi is just a character from the Greek alphabet, are often rated in tons, which in metric countries would be meant in ...metric tons per metric surface area. But I'm pretty sure they put imperial tons, so a 6 tons jack would be a 6 (imperial, long) tons per sqi, thus 13440 psi. Best part comes with Chinese made products where I'm confident to think they put *metric* tons per squared inch! What a fun! 😃

      12 ton is the maximum force the frame can widthstand, 6 ton is just the hydraulic bottle, that could be changed with one more powerful up to the limit the frame can widthstand.
