Kinetic Log Splitter - Build | 0.7 sec Cycle

  • Wood splitting can be very tedious and tiring, so I decided to make a kinetic wood splitter.
I tried to use the materials I had in the workshop, which made it an inexpensive project.
The log splitter is very fast and surprisingly powerful.
While doing this project, I didn't think it would be such a powerful machine.
The main frame is 100x100x3mm square tube.
The legs are made of a 40x40x3 square tube
The flywheel is 300mm in diameter and the pulley for the motors is 60mm. With 2800 rpm of the engine, it gives us the rotation of the shaft driving the rail of 560 rpm.
    The flywheel weighs 20 kg.
The toothed racks (not hardened) are module 3 and have a length of 500mm + 60mm with a welded piece of steel.
The gears (only teeth hardened) are also module 3 and have 12 teeth each.
The whole thing weighs less than 100 kg.

    Hello our dear subscribers :)
You deserve a few words of explanation why the activity on the channel was so low lately.
I got married almost two months ago and there was a lot of preparation about it, then my wife and I went on a short honeymoon. In addition, there was a move to another city, which also took a lot of time.
After returning to everyday life, I started a new project. Unfortunately, after almost three weeks of work, it turned out that it did not work as it should, and I had to stop working on it for the moment. I quickly started working on a new project. It took me about 8 working days and finally we have a new machine and therefore a new video.
I can't promise you anything, but we will try to increase the frequency of adding videos.
    Thanks for being here.
    Best regards.
    Darek

An easy CYA on the design with somethinng like this would be a second mechanical safety that must be engaged or disengaged like a spring pin release, thus using the second hand. That way nobody could ever accidentally crush their hand though it would really slow down the usage and make balancing the wood for more accurate. That would only be if I were making it for somebody else. He built it so I'm sure he knows what it's capable of.

Congrats on getting married. Just celebrated our 28th anniversary this summer. Some bumpy times here and there but we’re hanging in!
I’ve just discovered your channel and am really impressed by your creativity and technical expertise.
One thing you might consider for this splitter is some kind of lock for the handle that requires a deliberate motion to move or squeeze - like a lever or button.
The reason I say this is that when moving the wood you could accidentally hit the handle, activate the ram, and crush your hand. It looks like this nearly happened at 15:20 when removing split wood from the machine.

Pretty fivking slick move using your lathe as a mill. Badass video. It wouldn’t matter if what you build was used to fold envelopes, the shear brilliance and on a whim ingenuity is truly something to behold. Love your content. Keep up the great work amigo! 👏👏👏💪💪💪🥊

Drives me crazy that there is only a 4" I beam on wood splitters and you have to hold the wood!!! Do me a favor and be the first to add a cradle so you can just drop the logs. Maybe get real fancy and have the weight of the log close the cradle arms around the log to hold it for you, once the halves are ejected the arms open as the weight is gone ;) Awesome job on the project!
