Doug Stanhope - Mentally Ill vs Mentally Challenged

- From Doug Stanhope's 2016 special ''No Place Like Home''
Recorded Live at The Bisbee Royale in Bisbee..
CLIP: “The mental illness chunk” He acknowledges he’s oversimplifying by choosing to divide all of mental illness into two camps: one umbrella group for those disturbed; the other, developmentally disabled or challenged. Only the latter earns our societal sympathy, Stanhope argues. Our disturbed neighbors get kicked to the curbs, often literally left homeless and alone.''

/ dougstanhope - Komedie
No comedian that I know of EVER has gone into darker depths and with more honesty than Doug Stanhope. He's a goddamn genius and he's one of the most couragous comedians I've ever seen.
George carlin
@@huntrayisabeast16 I love George, Doug is very specifically different. So much so that he gets NO coverage ever. George was by his own defining a "social commentator". Doug is sort of like that. When Carlin died I took it hard. Doug is not Carlin and that is a credit to both of them. I understand where people draw the similarities.....but they really aren't similar at all.
Doug is closer to Bill Hicks but more polished and without all the screaming and onomatopoeia. Easier on the ear but the with and the flow and the insight like hicks did. It’s fucking impressive.
Try Frankie Boyle as well you will like him
like george carlin lol
Only the court jester can speak an awkward truth.
Shakespeare knew that.
Not really, though.
The Jester is employed by the King.
He tells sanitized versions of the truth to placate the court.
@@hhiippiittyy ya......👍
Like a salt lick for the homeless! What a great line!
Doug Stanhope in a suit looks like a drunk teacher
He is a drunk teacher, but a great one.
Door to door insurance seller
Shower curtain ring salesman
He's what Gil from the Simpsons would become.
That's because he is. He teaches how to stop giving a shit and tell fistfuck jokes and enjoy myself 101, 202, 303, 404 and honours
I don't want to live in a world without Doug Stanhope.
I’ve seen him live. Great guy!
I saw him live twice, the second time was especially good.
If you're living in youth there will be a day dude, it sucks REAL bad. But luckily all of his work will be archived!!
Doug, if you're ever scouring through CZcams and come across this comment, I want you to know that this is a hard hitting truth that you dealt to the audience with such sincerity. It's moving. Thank you.
Little bit close to the George Carlin bit on language though, it’s excellent but an explored premise.
@@sizzlepants8525 not even close
......WHICH george bit on language? Lol
Damn. What a closer. 👏💙👏
Stanhope is very open to talk to his fans if you reach out to him. I've emailed him and gotten responses within 48 hours. I don't think he dabbles in these comments though.
Taking care of my schizo affective bipolar mom and Doug is my hero
Fucken good on ya mate, really

Doug is one of the last of honest, funny and real stand-ups out there. The guy deserves a statue.
I thought he said he didnt have a strong closer!? That bit about the gun shop, bar and CIA was fucking genius
The punchline to this was mindblowing, just incalculable comedy genius.
Doug went full god tier
As someone who makes his living working in a behavioral health hospital: thank God someone finally said it.
He doesn't exist
Agreed. I hate our system. I try my best to help make it a little better.
Said what?
@@steveking6322 That the system sucks. The whole "CIA Skype" part of the bit.
Right!?
I don't think people understand how important this set is.
He's definitely not done. This is pushing George Carlin levels
@@stevenw595 pushing? he left george behind a long time ago
Now again, more than ever...again
He has legit grievances, I see him tearing up because of the lack of mental health care for his partner in this system.
@@user-ko5ul7yi1x I was listening to his podcast a lot back around the time frame of this being filmed. And I'm pretty sure it was around the same time Bingo his girlfriend was having some mental health episodes and breakdowns. I remember she was having a very hard time with a doctor or two and a facility or something. With the only place she could go that her insurance covered was horrible or she had to travel hours away to get any kind of actual care. I can understand the vitriol he has here, especially seeing it through the lens of it very much effecting the life of a person you love. The system is fucked and it is just how he says... nobody cares about the mentally ill unless they are an issue for someone at that moment or stuck with/caring for them..
I was nothing I didn’t exist and I never had a bad day. Classic line!
Well remembered days
Absolutely brilliant explanation of mental illness and parental responsibility.
Profound truth, of which is conveniently overlooked and even suppressed or downplayed by the imposter syndrome ridden, remorseful buyers club of the kids with kids. These people have such weak senses of self that they generate most all there self worth praying at the alter of the status quo according to big daddy business and comparing themselves to everyone like everything is one big competition. Appealing to authority whilst impoverishing personal autonomy, patting themselves on the back for the image they uphold about themselves as they undermine and incredulate all who oppose the single minded sycophancy that is there apparent primary concern. Dishonest to the core. A very sad and unfortunately common trope. The matter of fact way in which doug brings the subject about is deeply cathartic to me, he is a hero.
Doug does comedy for the people who *need* it.
That somehow makes sense
Well of course it makes sense. We ALL need comedy. Just my opinion, individual results can and will invariably vary🤙😁much love to all. G
Nailed it.
I've bartende at a small town shithole bar that had comedians come through once a month. I always asked who they thought was the toughest SOB out there doing it today. The man or woman that other comedians said they were afraid of and would never follow. Stanhope was always on the list, maybe not always the no. 1 come to mind but always mentioned with a "Jesus Christ" under their breath.
You could see him tearing up for just a second even though he can appreciate the absurdity of it all. He really loves bingo.
I'm an atheist with mental illness and I love Doug; I gave him $500 of my own money for that atheist lady's house because I love him, because of that and the atheism. And the mental illness.
@@JosephScott-ct9sw sounds like a lot is going on there, js. I'll pray for you.
@@fundeek It was a joke. And true.
@@JosephScott-ct9sw Yep, God is true. And you're nuts, that's true. And you gave some money which is nice, and that's true. The funny part is what alludes me? Guess you had to be there.
@@fundeek Misunderstanding, I never maintained that God is true
I finally watched this special last night, 2 years late. This immediately became one of my favorite comedy bits. Right up there with Carlin's Pro Life rant. I was constantly jumping between wanting to laugh and wanting to cry. "The idea of comedy, really, is not everybody should be laughing. It should be about 50 people laughing, and 50 people horrified." - Patrice O'Neal
Wow! thought he'd lost it a bit and then pulls it together into a groundbreaker. Doug, I salute you.
I've already posted, but feel I should expand... Doug takes life, and it's most extreme foibles, and ravages on them... and makes us laugh. As a misanthrope, I don't know how to express my appreciation for that... except to post. And say... thank you. I need this.
gives a much needed dose of Truth guys is both well read and lived life to the fullest extent 18 years a slave i can really relate to that
The best stand up comic of all time.. By a pretty big margin in my opinion as well..
Patrice O'neal
Mentally disturbed people are far more likely to comment on youtube videos. thanks doug, you're a legend
And so you have, well done, here..... have a fish.
gary maxwell Indeed 🙃
I heard there was fish here?
No one has that market cornered!
Disagree , I don't feel disturbed at all I rather enjoy it
This is one of the most important pieces ever done on any stage
The actual message in this routine is so relevant to everyday life…..
I lived with a woman-- she was eccentric. I spent about 3 weeks thinking she was going to murder me until I realized that she had no internal monologue--- she said everything she was thinking out loud, and most of what she was thinking was about past trauma. I was never in any danger whatsoever. I ended up giving her my car keys and debit card. I've never trusted anyone more than her other than my ex-wife and kids. Lived with her for months and she was a pleasure.
But if you didn't know her-- she was terrifying. Constant really aggressively violent speech coming out of her. You just had to realize it wasn't aimed at you, she was just talking to herself.
When someone walks behind me, I feel on guard and ready to fight if they do something weird. With her, she would be cussing and punching the air, I never ever felt the the least bit in danger or on edge. She seemed crazy, but she wasn't.
There's degrees of crazy.
I have a sister/friend, that's, just like that. She might, fxxx with me, but, she won't let, anyone or anything else, fxxx with me. She's MY resident madpuss 😆🤣😜😎
Is this a fight club thing? Asking anyone?
"...much to her husband's chagrin." jesus christ this is why i love stanhope...
"And you wonder why Americans die In hail fire in America, it isn't Isis... " no one could say it clearer than Stanhope!
*What?!*
His joke build up is just perfect. He said just one word : "Smokers" and the whole story gets even more hilarious.
This is such an epic, unbelievably brilliant bit.
He has a particular delivery and very unique style, all while hacking very sensitive and subtle differences in a very difficult subject: mental health. And he nailed it!
The best comedians always left me with a satisfied feeling after laughing, and a profound sense of gratitude that they don't run anything important...
Stanhope for president
Stanhope owns the comedy game.
Yea critical thinking at it's best , bit about a guy fishing needs a permit is sooo true ,, sad funny & true ,, = good comedy
Thank you for saying this Doug, really important.
There's a bunch of great comedians and then there's Stanhope. Absolutely one off, death-defying, cliche-destroying, hilarious mastermind.
Doug is my GOAT of standup.
So Thrilled I’m living at the same time as this guy
Exposing the blind spots and polite fictions of our society
even when I occasionally disagree this guy can deliver anything in a funny way
I still believe this is one of the very best. An important mind.
As someone with severe mental illness that has resulted in 3 hospitalizations
Thank you
It’s all good
Tell us more about that my mate
"smokers" - that took me completely by surprise - and made me guffaw when I was wondering where the fuck he was going with this
Most favorite bit of all time!!!! Thank you Doug! Fucking thank you!
Yes, this one and his "lazy songwriters" bit are my favs
Stanhope hits hard as fuck after a shitty holiday week with family
The world needs more normal people who speak there mind who could give a crap less about offending people
One of his best bits.
I went to church with Doug and his family when I was a child. Unfortunately we never hooked up as friends, we barely knew each other. Me and my buds from Tatnuck would have had him over Olean St. for one of many kegs if I did. My Mom got her ears pierced by his Mom! lol. His Dad was a good man. Don't remember his Mom well but my Mom sure did.
I think I have shared this bit more than any other. You make a difference Doug, keep going brotha.
First time seeing Doug perform. He has great material and a good delivery. The suit from Al Bundy’s closet was epic.
As a paranoid schizophrenic I would give my 2 cents on the issue....but I need them to pay for my psyche meds. Or all Hell will break loose
Yeah 2 cents might get you a couple of milligrams of something to help you.
most accurate description and better than public health description
loved his little dig at the town gossip at the end of the show, she ran him down he gives her a moment of infamy
Ill never get tired of doug.
i wouldnt reccomend us all living our lives like Doug but if we try thinking like he does we will live in a better world
"they have...bees living in their beard"
i lold
Doug still looks the same as he did basicly when he was 20. Jesus I think the alcohol pickled him.
That's the benefit of looking like shit your whole life. Looking like shit is ageless.
Pickled my ass also
Little bit less hair and a little more red-faced, but yee, pretty much the same.
He looks BETTER now. Its crazy
@@switchbuckle5th Say what you will about ugly people, but they tend to age better than the pretty ones.
There is no bit that can top this. Utter genius
A modern-day prophet. An explainer of horrible situations. A teller of the truth. Legend.
This is why i love this guy
Love the C.I.A. for "Community Intervention Associates". My parents made me see a therapist whose office was at 666 Dundee Road
When I smoked , at times it felt like being in the picket line for the zombie apocalypse , the first line of defense around hospitals , office blocks , and apartments .
Everybody else indoors being nice to the mentally challenged , while we were outside being encircled by the mentally disturbed .
I love this guy's stand up
I just got to the Gifford part at 7:21 AM, post-shower, barely awake, no coffee yet, bi-polaring at about 40% and laughing out loud so hard I am crying and my side hurts. Bravo!
I tripped over my own shoe laces and ended up in hospital with multiple fractures.
The cause was/were my reacent;y purchased safety boots.
The boots had steel toecaps, which were a great protective feature (and my reason for buying the fucking things) , BUT they also had hooked metal lace threaders, into which the laces of one boot got caught in the other boot; bringing me down to solid concrete, breaking my knee, wrist and elbow... all within a single fraction of a second.
But I still love Doug, he's never far wrong. He's the only human, that I've NEVER met, that I want to meet and get drunk with before I die. (indeed I could very well die that very night)
I don't always agree with him but he always makes me laugh out loud, even when I don't.
GOD bless you Doug. You're the best... ever. And don't become a theist, for that was not your blessed
path and vision.
Someone, once asked Thelonious Monk what made someone a genius. His cool reply was "Who ever is most himself"
Doug is a genius on that definition alone.
Lenny Bruce - Bill Hicks - Doug Stanhope
The 3 evolutionary steps of stand up comedy so far...
“Us!….Smokers!” Lol
Wow . that was deep and meaningful conversation . not many stand up have the guts bring such topic . thanks for the education though. we through people under the bus when they are mentally ill and need help the most.
The only comedian who actually talks about these issues 🙏🏾🙌
I love your stuff doug.

you sure ?
@@playbookshowme484 pretty sure. Taking 5 pills a day sure
Up there with the very best.
@19:16 - That mocking laugh at the out-of-touch and uselessness of the nurse's advice is so fitting bahahahaha
Doug is amazing
Omg... smoking outside bit at 4:00 had me crying 😂😂😂
My sister was a smoker, and she said the exact same thing twenty years ago. I believe the exact phrase 'salt lick for the homeless' was used by her.
Underrated always
This is brilliant, just brilliant
Everyone should watch this
This is so important.
I literally was treated like a slave by my stepdad my entire childhood. Made to work constantly, humanity beat out of me, beat for saying I was hungry and only fed once or twice a day as a child. Not sure why I'm telling you this lol. Thank you Doug
People are narcissistic, sick and beyond self-indulgent, mostly. I doubt the cycle will ever end.
Paul, god damn you sound like you were one pain in the ass kid man....bitching from day one🎻😘
like, he didn't post the vid or will read your cry for help..
AT LEAST YOU GOT FED! I had to catch stray cats to eat, goddam privileged dick!
Did he beat you with Jumper cables
I'm enamored with Stanhopes brain and his timing is masterful
Doug Stanhope is an absolute beast of a comic! The line "it aint's ISIS" was perfect.
Every sentence is pure gold.
Wow. Doug is the man
Brilliant. The best right now, no question
That part about smokers was too real!
The great thing about this set, is how he mocks the tarded while actually defending them, and rooting for them. Like a big brother mocks his younger brother but always has his back when it goes down.
I just call them by their given name. “Marines”
Dad said to always look out for them before he died, because I’m bigger…and stuff.
He said not to bitch about having to keep buying mire crayons after every lunch break. Said if anything ever happened to them, I’d gladly trade every last one of my crayons for just one more day with ‘em.
I kinda agree.
(Except for Carnation Pink. Fuck then little Jarhead Assholes…that’s MY Goddamned crayon …
… even if it DOES still taste like green Tabasco sauce and dried jalapeño cheese spread)
Beautiful bit. Immaculate.
If only more people spoke the truth lol. This is such a fantastic bit.
he gives truth so powerful it should be applied by hyperdermic
I'd recommend his "Ugly Woman who Could Sing" monologue...
Some pure, raw truth delivered in a way you can't deny.✌️
He rivals Carlin in his social wisdom.👍
Saw him in Birmingham, the old Dome II, fucking smashing, that Scottish bloke was creeping behind the curtain with a glass of Vodka trying to give it to him
Crushing it.
Makes you feel better
Thanks Doug
Cheers
This is one of the most incredibly well crafted bit of comedy I have ever seen. Respect!
Doug is one of the greatest
brilliant
That was brutal, honest comedy genius!
this is so fucking wonderful. this is the greatest piece of stand up ever made.
I found this so relevant and true. Very intelligent man.
Thank you
i found out about Doug after a youtuber recommending comedians... and now i totally understand when he said "the only comedian that made me laugh and cry at the same joke"
I damn near cried, listening to him rant about this. Doug is 100% right.
Brilliant, Sir. Fecking brilliant.
How can he look so good?
