Justin Long measuring the square footage of the basement tunnel LMFAOOOOO he is the best!!!😂🤣
the funniest movie scene in 2022 was when he googled if underground squares can price up the house. I rarely laugh loud but that scene got me so off the guard that I burst out laughing like a mad man in the middle of the night.
I was surprised by how hilarious the movie ended up being in addition to having great scares. Zach’s come a long way from Miss March lol.
I mean, Miss March was horror of a different kind....
I LOL'd when Tess said, "Nope."
The second act where Justin Long's character comes along was such a hilarious change of pace, but it worked so well in the long run
I JUST FOUND OUT HE DIRECTED THIS. I watched WKYK when I was like 13 and now Zach has directed the years best horror movie.
If Justin Long is in the movie then you know it's funny.
I went in blind too and loved it. I see why people don’t like watching trailers now.
Only knew that this was a horror movie, I didn’t even know any of the actors or the director before going in. Best horror movie experience I’ve had in a long time
What's cool is the bonkers story and Justin Long is comedy gold. Him fumbling with the gun and throwing the girl down to save himself is hilarious in a dark way.
I was glad the trailers for this movie didn't give anything away. I loved the way the movie was paced, where it went through different storylines in abrupt ways that eventually brought you to the final act that brings all the characters different situations together
Dan describing this movie as a dark theme-park ride is so spot on! This movie takes you into some terrifyingly thrilling places.
Both Stuckmann and Dan said to see the movie knowing as little as possible so I took their advice and skipped their revews till I saw the movie. It's excellent! I was sitting there, literally thinking "THAT'S how you do it!!!" There are so many bad horror movies that when you see a really great one, it's like getting a reward for putting up with the other dreck (or just plain mediocre ones). But I also agree with Dan who said that this has been a solid year for horror. A pleasant surprise. This movie is great. If it interests you, just go!
Because you took their advice thats why you found it good. If you known all the twists you would not be thinking thats how you do it, For people a good movie depends not only on the movie quality itself, but on relation to others things, perceptions or precognitions, marketing, etc. People go in their head with... .
Totally didn't know where the story is going and loved the red herring where the creeper renter turns out to be innocent after all. These darn scriptwriters pulled a fast one on us. LOL
This is why horror is my favorite genre!!! You explained it perfectly! Horror can be about literally anything! Can be mixed with every other genre! For example, my favorite horror movies are Alien, Halloween, Shaun of the Dead, Hereditary, and Scream. All of these films are totally different! They tell different stories, with different sub genres, different motivations, different characters m, different themes, different types of fear/horror! Appreciate you making that point, thanks Dan!
Comedy could too, even moreso maybe. Political horror is way rarer than political comedy.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom I disagree, at least in theaters. Mainstream comedy filmmaking hasn't pushed boundaries in a long time. Even the Judd Apatow stuff is long gone.
@@CMontgomeryBurns09 I was talking of the diversity of the genre, not how the genre is being done.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom That sounds like six of one or half a dozen of the other, to me.
Totally agree. A good movie is a good movie no matter what the genre. Horror suspense mystery drama you name it.
I love your enthusiasm Dan
Haven't had a movie surprise me as much as "Barbarian" in a long time. What an insane ride! Also, we need more trailers to take this approach - it didn't give anything away at all, even though it seemed like it might have.
And they did it on a $4M budget. That doesn't even cover Justin Long's salary. Compare that to Jeepers Creepers on the same budget and you'll appreciate the quality of script and director. It shows.
Everyone was so amazing, they really played their scenes happier and with their mouths opened wider.
I always appreciate Dan Murrell's review of horror films because he informs if it is jump scares or not. I probably would have passed on this one if he didn't review. Now I am hoping it is still in theaters after my quarantine is done.
Hey glad to see you still review!!! Subbed!
Just so you can tout your clout - I never heard of this before you tweeted about and 30 seconds into this you've convinced me to see it this weekend. I'll watch the rest of your review once that's done.
I saw a trailer for this once like 2 months ago . I’ve been to the movies, maybe 10 times since & haven’t seen the trailer since. I’m assuming the marketing budget was virtually nonexistent. But I saw the movie today in XD & really enjoyed it. This has been a pretty good year for horror
I’m glad I paused your review and went to see the movie because going in as blind as possible was a real treat! What a great movie and just overall experience!
I saw this at a preview screening & Dan is right. Know as little as you can but see it in theaters with as many people as you possibly can & you WILL not be sorry!
I don’t know if this one is big enough for Dan to do a spoiler video but I’d love to see one! Stopped as soon as he said to go in blind, watched the movie, and came back. Great movie! Def recommend
I agree with the less you know, the better. Every time I thought I had this movie figured out, it took a batshit crazy turn towards the opposite. The only other movie I can think to recommend right now that benefits from going in without knowing anything , is a movie called Blood Punch (2014). The trailer for Blood Punch gives the premise and even the ending. The tag line on the poster gives away the premise that isn't revealed until after 40 minutes in the movie. I recommend both movies, equally. Again, watch Blood Punch 100% blind. Same with Barbarian.
That's why love horror, it's so varied. Love to hear your positive thoughts. I wish I could see this here in India, let's see when that happens...
Dang haven't heard anything about this before but now I can't wait to check it out!
I’ll never look at tape measuring ever the same 😂
*screech - hard break at 0:55! THANK YOU Dan 😊 Haven´t got the faintest clue about the movie yet and seen nothing about it. Instant Must-see now 🖖 I´ll be back
I swore off horror movies a long time ago but I might give this one a watch. I HATE jump scares so I was glad that you mentioned that it doesn’t rely on that.
It doesn't rely on it but they're still in there. It made the person next to me leave the cinema.
i don’t like horror movies really but I’ve watched this and black phone I think it’s very tolerable
I had a blast & watch other reviewers so far they got mind blown.
I think Black Phone still my favorite horror this year, but this is a close one.
Spot on advice Dan I ignored a lot of the marketing for this movie and Loved going into it Blind.
Based on all the positive reviews I've heard so far, I plan on seeing this over the weekend at some point. Very intrigued.
I was also lucky enough to go into this movie not knowing a single thing about it. That definitely made it more enjoyable, as I can only imagine trailers would potentially ruin fun turns or moments
How do you know without having seen the trailer first as a comparative experience? You can only do it one way or the other, so you really don’t know not seeing the trailer made it a more enjoyable experience.
I did see the trailer but won’t see the movie. I think the trailer, like most, did present too much of the plot, whether accurately or inaccurately, I do not know.
@0:54 OMG thank you for your advice. i followed it and i wish i could leave a tip as a thank you.
Went in blind. Didn’t see a trailer. No idea what it was about. Never even heard of it until I was checking for a movie time. So good and so fresh. I absolutely loved it, such a good film
I really enjoyed it, and was surprised how much humor I found in it.
THIS WAS SUCH A FUN RIDE!
I go to most movies knowing as little as possible and agree that especially for movies like this that tends to be the best way to go. I rarely watch trailers at all any more. I tend to go by the studio, the writer and/or director, sometimes actors, and then by the Rotten Tomatoes scores (for horror movies high critic score and low audience score usually means I'll like it) and word of mouth.
Unfortunately I got spoiled, but I'm still going to see it. the Trailer looked fantastic. Thanks, Dan!
Black Phone is still my favorite
Please do a full spoiler review I’d be so interested in your total thoughts
just watched it, its solid
Trevor Moore is smiling on Zach's success from up above ✊️
Saw it Friday night and loved it. All I knew of the film was the title and that people who have seen it really liked it. Did not watch a trailer or read a plot synopsis. The film is good, creepy, suspenseful, scary, fun.
I finally saw it. The entire cast was excellent. I really enjoyed this one.
Wow! Great review. Interesting. I may be too chicken to go but I’m soooo curios, now!!!
For me, it wasn’t as scary as I expected. It doesn’t rely on jump scares or gore. It was still suspenseful and fun though
Okay, I decided to see at 1:20. That’s enough information to pique my interest. I’m not usually a fan of horror, but I like to branch out from time to time, and it is a great genre to just take a punt on.
Started this review a few days ago, but turned it off when you said go in as blind as possible. I hadn't even seen a trailer. I knew it was a horror movie and Bill Skarsgard was in it. That was literally it. Thanks for that suggestion but holy crap dude, what a ride that was. And now coming back to this review, gotta say I'm kinda dying for a spoiler review too!
This movie was a blast! Such a good fall surprise
Great ride start to finish.
Horror is the lone non-blockbuster, non-Oscar bait type of movie that still delivers at the box office, and for years now. When most hardcore action, science-fiction, thriller, and even comedy films have migrated to streaming platforms --- wisely, I might add, cause most don't make money at cineplexes --- theatrical horror remains successful and diverse.
The casting for this particular film was so well executed. Bill Skarsgard is known as Pennywise so naturally the audience will be more on edge with his character, while Justin Long is someone very likable playing a dirtbag character.
Please do a spoilers review when you can! At a point where it won't affect moviegoers since the spoilers are what make this movie special.
Barbarian sounds like every horror film that got banned from video nasty in late 70's thru 80's I'll definitely going to see it next Sunday.
Loved Barbarian. Hope to see a review of Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Sandman!
I love Zach Cregger so much I am so happy for him
I've watched exactly ONE Minute of a Redlettermedia review for this movie, before my brother recommended it to me and we watched it yesterday together... 😊
Is this the fastest turnaround on a movie review? Also when I saw a trailer earlier this week I couldn't give it a second thought but now I'm definitely interested at what made it stand out for you.
It's easy to do a quick turnaround when you can't (or don't want to) say much!
After 39 seconds, I did as you recommended and noped out pronto lol. Actually, I've been doing this for some years now, eschewing reviews, trailers, hype of any shape or form, even posters, for any work of art-movies, books, TV shows, music albums, paintings, etc. I've always been pleasantly delighted that I did. I just couldn't resist clicking on ole Dan Murrell's thumbnail ;) Later dude!
*It was ok. The trap-set up under the house was cool. The main girl Tess Pissed the entire theater off. You could hear the audience complain too. She kept making mistake after mistake. No logical girl would put up with staying in that area the house was in. The minute the other house guess got caught by the monster, she should of got in her car, and got real help. Not the hood police. When Justin Long showed up, this entire film went from Horror to Comedy. 7/10.
I find it interesting that everyone loves this movie. I enjoyed the first act then I thought it went down hill. About 30 minutes left I was just kinda waiting for it to end.
I almost had a panic attack watching this film!!!
I watched this last night and also knew nothing about it and I also had a blast.
I love this movie.
Sorry only watched 1 Minute... Gonna be bach after I saw the movie (soon!) 😉
Also on my way to see this one as well 😂 be back in a few hours
From anyone that has seen this movie; how many jump scares do you think there are total in this film? I'm very curious about it and want to see it but I personally don't do well with jump scares and avoid the horror genre because of it (unless I know it's something like The Shining)
I think the trailer does a good job at giving you just enough to entice you but not too much where you feel like you have watched the movie in 2 minutes.
Don't know what I think about this movie. I liked not having a clue where it was going, but once the thing happens I don't know if I loved it. Got a big laugh towards the end that I hope was intentional. Fun theater experience.
I don't think it was, this movie sucked
I enjoyed the movie, but too many leaps of logic are required. I couldn't get over the character decisions that they were required to keep the story going.
Saw it last night. Really liked it. My whole auditorium was very vocal during lol so was i
This movie was insane! Everyone in the theatre was on edge!
justin's best performance for me, wow
Go Noles!
Pinocchio- horror of a different kind! LOL. but damn... I was so looking forward to this movie.
She was in Black mirror
I thought it was really good up until about 20 minutes before the ending. I really like the lead actress! Excellent performance. But it's 7 for me (as was the black phone). Still have to see Smile, but I probably expected to much of this movie.
I know Georgina Campbell from British tv. She’s a great actress. Horror isn’t really my thing - I’ll end up watching the whole movie through my fingers. But you made me curious.
I'm a bit confused. Who was supposed to be Conan?
Bill Skarsgård or Justin Long?
The Parasite comparison makes me excited…too bad I don’t watch horror movies.
Did anyone catch that the street was 476 Barbury St?
Little details..
Dan the man.
I don't like the horror genre mainly because of the huge suspension of disbelief the genre asks of the viewer. This felt grounded. This felt like it could happen in a run down neighborhood at the other side of town (to a certain degree). The crowd I watched it with was gasping and adding to the suspense of the film. Quite honestly my fav movie experience of this year. This movie had balls and I respect it greatly.
Gutted there's no sign of this being released in The UK.
The more I think s as bout this movie the more I kinda love it
@Dan
Curious to know: which was more unnerving, this or Hereditary?
Hereditary seems like the obvious choice, but the more I think about it the more weight Barabarian gets on its side of the scale.
Lmao barbarian is no where near hereditary in any sense.
I'll say this: horror is probably the hardest genre to pull off. Comedy is a close second, although it's far less enduring. Although both genres rely on surprising the audience, so they tend to have a limited shelf life.
well Barbarian seemed like a one setting movie. Those movies if done well can turn out good.
Alright, you sold me at the 2:10 min mark. I’ll watch the rest after I’ve seen the movie.
I LOVE the Whitest Kids U Know and so I've been really excited for this movie.bI honestly think that comedy directors get horror/suspense really well
Suspense with a good story and not relying on jump scares or gore?
Sign. Me. Up!
IMHO, they made this movie to be as much unpredictable as possible for such a predictable genre. And they made it. good movie. the only predictable thing was that Justin Long will eventually die but that is just a fact when you see his name in some horror flick.
This film was not even remotely on my radar... but good god. 3.8/5 on Letterboxd is spectacular.
No UK release date for it as far as I can tell :(
Those cops in the movie ticked me off
Watching this review 2 months later cos I wanted to see it blind. Amazing film
For me, this movie was trash. It was going well and then it just became a comedy for me. I definitely still think it’s a good watch but just wait till you can stream on Netflix or something
If the movies, "Don't Breathe" and "The Hills Have Eyes" could have a baby, this would be result!
If those 2 movies had 2 babies then those 2 babies had a baby lol
@@KingKeshane I see what you did. Well played
@@KingKeshane Incessantly incestuous
Some of us aren't particular for horror films, so going in absolutely cold might not be the best. Thought it may have been another Conan film or something. Glad you liked it though
Had to do a double take hearing this was a horror movie directed by Zach Cregger, as I'd heard nothing about this movie until now and it didn't really compute lol
The jeepers creepers guy died in both movies.
Definitely didn't get the vibe that it was a comedy horror. I may just have to check it out.
I was so looking forward to seeing this movie until I saw the 20th Century FOX logo on its poster. With a three year boycott of the Rodent House in full effect, I had to pass on this one.
I didn't find it boring, but it's definitely not scary... it's creepy at best.
Thanks for the advise. LOVED it.
This movie was a strong ?/10 for me idk what to think
