      They don’t understand just how poor people are in rural Appalachia. It’s why the whole concept of “white privilege” was insane to me on the face of it.
      There are kids in Appalachia, far too many, that if they don’t go to school…they aren’t going to eat that day. They often have too many siblings, most of their relatives are addicted to drugs, and the majority of them are doomed to live out a life largely identical to their parents’; scraping by on food stamps and unskilled labor if they can find it(and they even care to), only to eventually die early due to either poor nutrition or an overdose.

    And this is why the new She-Hulk is trash. The main character from this show complains about her problems with the people around her to a man who has been called a monster and hunted by the government for years, while trying to control his own inner demons, and believes that she has it worse than him. I mean the man has considered, and unsuccessfully, committed suicide at one point or another, and she is talking about how well she controls her anger in the face of cat-calling men. People like that need to get their priorities straight!

      Part of me wonders of today's stories are trash because the people writing them have had little to no hardship in their life.

    • @TubeofDestiny
      @TubeofDestiny Před rokem +119

      @@fnerXVI This is the reason - they grew up as trust fund kids and never ever had to endure actual hardships, but every media they consumed glamorized hardships (making it seem like anyone going through these suddenly were "brave" and "courageous" and overall nice people magically), so these kids ended up with an existential dilemma:
      - they either acknowledge they're spoiled as fuck and have to learn to cope with their social class and wealth privilege, and eventually come to the conclusion they have to share some of their wealth and restricted social class accesses with the rest of society,
      - or they invent hardships for themselves and build an imaginary world where they are part of the exploited, and their wealth and social access is not an obstacle to representing the poor, quite the contrary: it only means they naturally have to be the leaders of the people. Actual poor don't have the time, money or social connections to weight in the political game - so the trust fund kids _generously_ take over their hardship and talk in their names _for their own good._ Speaking for them is then enough, that's why they insist so much on superficial representivity over actual measures to help the people: no need to share their wealth and social class, when they can claim the voices of the people were "heard".
      These trustfund kids can afford not working at a 9-to-5 job, they can afford college degrees in art and humanities, they can afford gaining the access to influential media organizations, they can afford funding their own associations, NGOs, conferences and demonstrations. They have all the time and means to roleplay as the poor and the damned, with $500 pre-ripped jeans. Then once they finished playing around, they go back to their expensive multi-bedroom apartments, they go on vacation around the world to "meet other cultures", they get high-paying bullshit jobs through their social connections despite not having any useful formal education or practical skills, and they access political positions through their private-area networking. It's a foolproof con job.
      While the 20th century saw big victories for the least fortunate populations, with the standards of living rising and the middle class appearing, the 21st century is the one where the ruling class didn't just took back the economic growth to feed the top, and kicked down the social ladder, they also stole the struggles of the poor and are now parading them on sticks, ridiculing them, to show everyone who got the power. The fact that social media activism is so insulting to the people in actual need is not a coincidence, it is an integral part of that classist robbery.

    I agree with Pippa's thought process 100%. My family has not known financial stability for as long as I can remember. It was and still is absolutely terrible. All throughout middle school and high school, there were frequent periods that would last for almost two weeks where I would have little to nothing to eat and often times I would go without food entirely for days. Even now, I have to buy my parents groceries with the money I earn from working because they still struggle to afford it. And don't even get me started on our medical debt and the scam that is our healthcare system. I've had insurance companies flat out tell us no when my mother needed coverage for medical care related to one of her many debilitating health conditions, because it "isn't worth covering" and we have to pay hundreds, if not thousands out of pocket.
    I used to have a friend in HS who, to put it lightly, was upper class. Guy never worked for anything in his life. His dad bought him a car, his dad bought him an iphone literally every time a new one came out, bought him a PS5, and bought him a ton of video game merch. His dad even gave him $4000 dollars to start investing with. He always talked about how homeless people should "just work harder" and how it's their own fault they're homeless, or how people had shitty clothing tastes because they couldn't afford to wear the clothes his dad bought him from the mall, or how crappy his house was despite it being two-story and very nice. Finally one day he criticized my clothes (over text, he was too much of a coward to confront people) and I just fucking snapped. Ranted about how much of a manchild he was and how he never worked for anything he had. And then I blocked him.
    Never trusted rich people since.

    Personally, the problem I have with the constant complaints about landlords is that its waaay too reductive. Like its the same as disliking soulless corporations like Walmart or Amazon and saying therefore ALL stores are evil, even the small Mom and Pop businesses. Like, it's always just "all landlords are evil" and other extreme rhetoric like that, but I have had some GREAT landlords over the past few years, so it just runs afoul of my own experiences. And yeah, some landlords can absolutely be dicks, but on the other hand sometimes its the tenants that are the ones being horrible. And you can't even reduce it to something like small landlords are good and big ones are evil, either. I've had great landlords that managed multiple large buildings, and horrible landlords that were just renting out one place. There are a billion different little factors that come together in this type of thing. But these people just generalize it down to Landlords = Evil.

      And when you call them out on their bluff their only garbage reply is "you clearly don't own property".
      Dude stfu, first, in my country any damage that isn't caused by a natural disaster is on the tenants' dime, so I know fucking well that some shit needing maintenance on its own is a once a trimester kind of work, so unless you have got 90 properties, you ain't working every day (and I've only ever lived in old houses/buildings).

Another issue is the government taxing the shit out of you(Property tax is a fun one that landlords get to deal with, even though it's usually not as much as rent). Michigan has the same division because it's a peninsula,the big cities and expensive coasts have a bunch of ivory tower parasites and political grifters but the rest of the population is farmers and factory workers.
      Back when those race riots were going on in 2020 I saw them start a protest out in a normal community and it was a total circus. That one actually stayed a peaceful protest because all the racial minorites in the area were refugees from violence with gainful employment and successful businesses so all the protesters had to be bussed in and it was extremely obvious. The cops were basically people's neighbors who mostly arrest drug runners and drunk drivers without any notable violent incidents so there was zero grassroots traction for it. The counterprotesters that showed up were more anti-police than the protesters because the feds later convicted them of antigovernment terrorist conspiracy or something, the only locals involved were the family disappointments that moved away for college and decided offensive twitter posts should be a crime after they gained 200lb.

    @rwberger6 Před 2 lety +245

    Good lord this game makes the characters look like spoiled brats. I had a solidly middle class upbringing but my parents didn't and worked hard to get that for us and made sure to drill into us kids work ethic and proper appreciation for the value of money. Yes student loans suck, yes rent sucks, yes the banks and government try to screw you over, but these people are poor because they refuse to adjust their lifestyle or think before they take out massive loans.

    • @113Kyote
      @113Kyote Před rokem +10

      They don't think before they take out loans because they aren't taught about the dangers of debt. From a very young age it is drilled into every U.S. student that if they don't attend college, then they will fail in life. They aren't taught enough about basic financial literacy and aren't taught the value or opportunities available in blue-collar industries. Many don't have the necessary writing skills to apply for grants, and even if they did have those they might not have the confidence to apply themselves or the competition may be too fierce. There is no guarantee that you will get a full ride to college, even if you come from a lower class/low income family. If your family has a lot of debt that's not paid off, then the amount of aid you can receive is significantly reduced as a result. This negatively impacts low income families more often than not because they are the ones typically suffering from debt. Sometimes that debt is then passed on to the next generation as well.
      The country expects teenagers to make responsible financial decisions, yet barely supplies them with the necessary information or tools to make smart informed decisions regarding their own finances. Of course they would ultimately end up complaining about such a flawed system.

Is it because of evil or something else?" And expecting people to have 6 months of rent saved up is just like any other condition of a contract and there are reasons for this if you think about it, it's stupid to blame landlords like that it shows lack of common sense since if all houses were destroyed,overpriced and the conditions of the contract were so unfair anyone could invest in property and take away their business since you don't need billons of dollars to own a house anyone can do it.

      @lesvernorn3613 Před rokem +3

      My parents own a small real estate agency and my dad and older sister are property managers so they have to deal with both the landlords and the Tenants. All Landlords want is for people to pay rent that covers the mortgage so they can pay off the investment, rent on time and for their house to not be destroyed. Tenants are almost always the problem, breaching the contracts, making the house filthy not doing basic maintenance, and acting entitled over everything. oh, the light bulb went out to let me call the agency to complain and try and make the landlord pay to replace it, or I broke something the landlord should pay. oh, my hair clogged the drain because let me hire a plumber and send the hundred dollar bill to the agency for them to sort out. the contract says no pets in the house well I'm going to do it anyway and lie about it when inspection comes even though I didn't even bother to do basic vacuuming and they can totally see the dog hair everywhere. "oh that hole in the wall yeah was there before e moved in, what do you mean you took photos of everything before we moved in" or my personal favourite "oh I cant afford the rent" when e just got calls from the neighbours about the noise of them paying to have satilight tv installed which is pretty expensive. OR moving people in who arent on the tennacy agreement
      Meanwhile the government keeps giving these people more and more rights so many that as an agency you have to spend tens of thousands a year to hire the support of a large team of property law specialists that you can call for advice when there is a problem even though 90% of the time they just say "um yeah we don't know fuck around and find out" when getting in trouble could be anything from a fine, your agency being shut down or going to prison.
      so yeah if you're a landlord, I highly recommend going through an agency saves you from personally dealing with a lot of bullshit
      if your a tenant shut the hell up and cut back on some luxuries and save up a deposit and buy a house, it'll either be about the same as rentals in mortgage or cheaper you will have more freedom and won't have a "greedy landlord demanding more money" you'll just have the banks upping your interest rate instead

    If you know your landlords name, that means they're using debt management to pay for the building you're in and if you don't pay your rent then your landlord can't afford the building. This is the only way individuals can invest in property. If you're not ok with that then what you want is for all rented property to be owned by corporations. Which is only bad.
