    Nice overview. I have been using Festool dust extractors for 20 years and have several including the CT36. At the rate you are using bags, that is costing you about $125/year. Over 5 years ago, I installed the CT-VA-20 separator on my CT36. While I have emptied the separator bin countless times, I haven't changed a bag in the CT since. At the time of purchase I thought it was an overpriced piece of plastic but have changed my mind. I checked the bag fill for this comment and esimated it is only filled 15-20%. When you install your last bag, I would consider that addition as at the current price, the payback is under 3-1/2 years. Festool offers a long life bag which I have no experience with. Over the years I have made significant investments in dust collection and it has improved my health considerably so I consider it a wise investment that I should have done much sooner but couldn't afford it at the time. Steve

      Check out CZcams on how to make your own tracksaw. There are things that you'll need to buy but a tracksaw, especially a Festool tracksaw, isn't one of them.

    I have a Harbor Freight Dust collector I use for my planner and it works great -- I have two Rockler Wall mount 1250 CFM dust collectors that work great but clog up with the planner where the HF never clogs. I use a Home Depot vac with a 5-gallon bucket with the Dustopper on top hooked to my Dewalt sander and 3 M sandpaper and it gets most of the dust. I will one day get a Festool Dust Extractor and sander but for now the Dewalt does a good job. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.

    Good to see your video. Chop saw is nearly impossible to solve. My only "big" purchase is also a Festool sander, but I use with aftermarket hose and Ridgid Shop Vac (and 2-stage hepa filter) - it's a boatload cheaper than Festool dust extractor.

    Thanks for sharing. I hate the idea of avoiding a tool because of the cleanup associated with using it.
    One easy no-tech improvement is keeping things off the shop floor (as much as possible) so dust can be easily blown/swept out. Anything touching the floor is a dust magnet 🧲

    • @carpenterkatieco

      Such a great point about keeping things off the floor. I used to let the dust build up and do a full vac of the shop but now I love my simple broom and dustpan to stay on top of things.

    I have the Festool ETS150/3 sander with the CT22 dust extractor. It is so effective, I do not wear a respirator when sanding. I had a Jet air scrubber and only turned it as I left the garage, on the 4 hour setting. That let it pull out the micro dust that can cause cancer. On my DeWalt 12 miter saw I have the Roussau shroud and a 3D printed dust collector hooked to my CT 22. Bought that from Wittworks(I think) on CZcams. The CT22 catches 60% of the dust at the source, and the shroud sends the rest into a 5 gallon bucket. Had a Jet dust collector, but gave that to my nephew when I gave him my table saw. With my Makita track saw, I have not felt the need to replace it. At the end of the day I use my CT22 and the vacuum accessory kit to clean the floor and work surfaces. Good video.

    Loved your video. I also have a small shop and except for the Harbor Freight dust collector (I use a Craftsman shop vacuum), I have exactly what you have, the Rousseau tent, the box fan and the same exact Festoolvsander and dust collector. I hook my Craftsman shop vac to Rousseau tent and I hook the Festool dust extractor up to the actual miter saw itself. I also purchased the Festool track saw, all of which I love. Try adding the Festool dust extractor to your miter saw, it might help a bit. Thanks for the video....

    Embrace the dust💨
    I've been in the woodwork industry, machining, bench joinery, carpentry and furniture manufacturing for 40 years give or take a few.
    We have very large extraction systems. For 40 years I've been bringing dust home. It's in my vehicle too.
    No matter how much I brush off or blast off with the air line it's in the fibres of all my work clothing.
    And then there is that last bit that falls out of your pockets when you get changed🤷. Along with the odd woodscrew that you have no idea why it was in your pocket.
    The dust! It follows me😂
    When I first met my wife she said you smell of wood. Eventually she stopped noticing 👍.

    Save your pennies and get a Festool track saw. That and a CT-48 purchased about 13 years ago were my first hits of the Festool crack, and it’s been down the rabbit hole ever since. In my experience, their dust collection is second to none, especially with the sanders (as you’ve discovered). Keeping the paper clean and cooled by the airflow through it makes it last a lot longer, too. As for the bags, they make a cyclonic separator (CT-VA 20) that mounts atop the vacuum; it will catch a lot of the dust and reduce the bag changing rate. Any of the others such as those made by Oneida would likely work nearly as well, too, but would be somewhat more klugey to integrate.

    Hi just found your channel, I haven't used the Kreg, BUT when I moved up to the 36mm hose that was huge for the Festool track saw. I also covered the arbor hole and added a side guard. Now it is virtually dust free. Don't get me wrong, of all the tools Festool sells, the track saw is the one I would recommend the least. I think most manufacturers do the track saw pretty well....at least of the other brands I have tried. Makita and Milwaukee.

    • @carpenterkatieco
      @carpenterkatieco  Před 6 měsíci

      Wow I had no idea there were other hose sizes. That's good to know. I loved my original Kreg but they replaced it because I couldn't get the blade off and I've had issues with the new one since it came out of the box. Might have to think about another option but I have the Kreg track and table which I really like...

    Try a MERV 13 filter for much better airborne dust removal. The 4” x 20” x 20” will fit most box fans and a standard filter in front for longer life, duct or other tape will work to hold and seal filters to the fan.

    You are where I was decades ago with my Bosch 8-1/4 circular saw, Bosch saber saw, and, Bosch 110V 2 speed electronic hand drill with keyless chuck 1/2". Before that in Houston I had a 12/14" Rockwell table saw on a patio with a custom made 4 wheel steel angle iron mobile base (Rockwell was 800 lbs).
    I still use the Bosch drill stand for 35MM cabinet cup hinges.
    I have the CT22 vac with Oneida (NY) dust collect
    attachment for the Festool vac (cutting my cost of Festool paper bags to zero; Oneida uses cheap plastic bags from Walmart.)
    The Oneida cyclone with bag can be attached to my Bosch orbital sander with very effective results at half the cost of Festool sanders. I do have the Festool linear sander which is the only linear sander on the market.
    You can run the Festool vac at half throttle for Bosch orbital sanding-just right.
    So look into Bosch for good pricing and durability.
    Stay away from Milwaukee brands or be prepared to be down when you really need a certain tool.
    Vincent Chicago
    Good luck.
    Metabo Hitachi had a 12" blade chop saw with
    2" dust port connect on sale closeout at Lowes
    for $230 + a 84 tooth fine cut blade $70.
    I sold my Makita laser chop saw as it would do dangerous cut and I was fearful of losing a hand.
    The more expensive chop saws have superior dust collection.

    Tracksaw advice - do yourself a huge favor and get the festool. Zero dust. Zero (well, some minor dust if your cutoff piece is less than 1/8", like when squaring an edge, but other than that, it's as good as your ETS - yes, really). It's spendy, for sure, but you will be amazed, if you spend a lot of time with sheet goods. Plus more benefits like no fuzzy cuts or chip-out, no kickbacks, and easy depth adjustments. Changed how I feel about my shop.

    Good approach to dust collection. I've had the Kreg track saw and the thing that helped most with dust collection was getting a cover for the arbor hole. Festool makes some great products but their sand paper is not that great for the price. I've been using the 3M extract and cubitron mesh discs which have been far superior and less expensive.

    • @carpenterkatieco
      @carpenterkatieco  Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks for watching! I actually have the arbor hole cover for my Kreg, I was hoping it would help more than it has. I get a lot of dust coming out the front (it seems) which then builds up between the track and the table. A table saw is probably best for the types of repeat cuts I'm making, but I've been stubborn about buying one. I'll check into the 3M discs! Definitely to open to trying other brands (once mine run out 😅).

    • @BravoCoWoodForge
      @BravoCoWoodForge Před 6 měsíci

      @@carpenterkatieco there will always be a bit coming out of the front. I considered it to be a great improvement over a circular saw with nothing.
