It is unbelievable that Scott Moore was able to create music and riffs to fit elvis songs so easily...scotty was perfect in his backing of elvis with his guitar...Scotty Moore was a special perfect genius with guitar ...at that time there was no one able to produce Scotty Moore sound...Scotty Moore was perfect for elvis and elvis was perfect for Scotty ..Elvis style of singing and voice made Scotty dig deeper for sound and riffs to match the magic of Elvis voice ..rip mr guitar Moore...thanks for beat and the drive of your magic guitar

It was truly Blessing from the Lord above that Elvis Presley met Scotty Moore and they both innovated the music called "Rockabilly"!
Those six Sun Records Label Singles are the Holy Grail of Rockabilly!
The '68 Comeback Special would have been a success regardless I'm sure, but Scotty passing that Super 400 to Elvis and letting him play it moved the sit down session to true iconic status. So not only did Scotty get Elvis going initially, he also must be given huge credit for his resurgence.

Scotty was criminally underrated as a guitarist he was always kind of looked at as the guy next to the king but boy he could play like a boss also I could watch him talk about guitars and gear all day so insightful
You nag Sam Phillips to call back a kid he hasn't seen in a year. You find the right tune that clicks during an "audition". That tune gets only some local airtime interest until you spend time touring small southern towns for free meals. You back the kid's meteoric rise with your expert skills. You get the royal flush from Colonel Parker. You show up smiling during the '68 Comeback Special and are then shown the door again. And, after all that, you graciously share wonderful stories from the first days of Rock and Roll. You are a true national treasure, Sir. RIP Scotty Moore.

Scotty was at the right place and time (Memphis Recording Service) of those early years where a local unknown name of Elvis got his break and the rest is history.Scotty,Bill and later DJ led the way to rock and roll.Scotty was one of the early true rock pioneers who led the way to the many guitarist we have today.I missed an opportunity years ago of meeting Scotty.To have had a chance to talk to him one on one from someone that was there with Elvis in the beginning making history.Joe,you are so blessed....ken.

Scotty Moore was always a Class Act! He just seem like such a decent and kind hearted man! And he played with such ease he made it all look so easy and flowing!
And I play guitar 🎸 and know for a fact it was not easy! Moore was just a natural musician and apparently completely self taught! Amazing!
It makes me think that he was fated to meet Elvis and do exactly what he ended up doing. He made history with Elvis. And they lit up the World!
And he did it in style and they were having fun, too! They all were good humored guys!
I eventually learned a few Scotty Moore licks and they were fun to play!

This is now one of my favorite interviews. Joe’s talent and ability to bring out the best in his guests. It never feels like an interview but more of a comfortable casual conversation.
Sterling... I really can’t thank you enough for the very kind words! I think that this “Vault series” interview with Scotty was my first one. It’s funny but Scotty or James Burton I think we’re the first person I told I was going to open a Musicians Hall Of Fame And Museum. I think it was Scotty because he was the first musician to donate a instrument to the museum. He pulled out two very nice Gibson’s and said pick the one you want so I got the blond 1980 Super 400. The Elvis ones were long gone:( Anyway I’m very happy you enjoyed it. As you can see most anyone could’ve had a good interview with Scotty. He had recently, not very long at all before this interview had a brain aneurysm and had a hole cut in his head to relieve the swelling. If he sounded a little confused during our chat you can understand why. By the way my grandson who just turned 2 is named Sterling:) All the best and thanks again..... Joe

Scotty was a class act all the way. Got to meet him at CAAS in Nashville several years ago but just for a brief moment.
I am glad he didn't get caught up in all that Memphis Mafia entourage stuff.

Deke' book is a great resource for all things Scotty Moore. We need more people cataloguing these events and restoring these instruments. Soon neglect will take it all...

Amazing!!! Loved Him! I live In Texarkana and the highway Elvis and Scotty etc would take in 55 56 etc for the Louisiana Hayride and the high school performances and in our town the municipal auditorium was is Highway 67 ** IT'S NAMED THE ROCK N ROLL HIGHWAY.... A huge stretch for rockabilly's to travel and play their music! I have heard so many stories from Elders about getting to see Elvis Johnny Cash Scotty Moore etc and what's so cool about back then Elvis would even stay sometimes at homes of fans many have photos of him napping on their couch or eating with them! I remember hearing the story of Elvis with is Pink & White Cadillac his first one he was in between Hope Ark and Texarkana and the brake line went out causing it to go on fire! Must of been horrible for him! But The Colonel's associates saw Elvis perform at the Louisiana Hayride and tole him so they went to see him in Memphis and that's when He signed with him --- I love the history of Elvis and when it tied in with my roots its just fascinating and the municipal has pictured of Elvis everywhere from his performances and too of Scotty Johnny Cash Thanks for this!!!!!!

Scotty Moore introduced an unsuspecting world to Rock and Roll guitar.
These guys were making history and they had no idea. They knew what instruments they liked or wanted to play, but still, they once sold or traded them, never thinking or having the lest idea of what could be paid for them at auctions sometime in the future. They just did not care much about trying to get tenths of thousands of dollars from someone, they were playing those instruments, using them, not trying to become rich by having owned them once. Even their popularity as musicians faded out at some stage of music history. recognition would come much much later for them, and only then the hunting for those musical treasures began, reaching immoral prices to be in private hands when they should have been donated to the public exposure in memory of those who contributed to the music culture in such a great way. I
n this interview, Scotty does not even remember what the flop side of Mistery train was. All of Elvis´s die-heart fans do know that, but again Scotty shows how much of a human person he was and how much of a professional work he did put down all those records, regardless of them being gold records or reaching the peak of the billboard lists for weeks. He had fun playing them but surely after all the years some of those early songs meant not much to him as they mean to us nowadays.
He really seemed a cool humble guy. May he rest in peace.

That old Bill Black bass was in a very sorry state before it was restored but it was worked on by an incredibly skilled man to get it back into its prime.
Mr. Scotty more was a class act. Love hearing his stories about Elvis. A shame that Elvis broke it off with Mr. Scotty and Mr. Bill after their helping get Elvis career established. Whitout Mr. Scotty and Mr. Bill Elvis wouldn't have the awesome cateer he had. I heard that Parker was the one behind Elvis letting go of Mr. Scotty and Mr. Bill, sadly. Bottom line, it was up to Elvis. Love the story about Mr. Bill's base. Thank you Mr. Scotty. May you RIP. RIP Mr. Bill too.

Elvis not only had the best rockabilly guitarist, but he also had the best rockabilly bassist. That, combined with the best rockabilly voice of Elvis, made the most important band in modern popular culture. WIthout Elvis, Scotty, Bill, and DJ, there wouldn't be any of the artists that came afterwards.

Here I am watching Scotty Moore tell the story of the famed Butts Echosonic - hearing his reasoning, how much he paid for it, mentioning names like Chet Atkins...reminiscing....how great is this??? Just FYI, I looked up an Echosonic on ebay and there is ONE for sale in Europe for about $12k! Joe, you probably have that in your pocket! Get it and we'll jam through it! lol. Man, I would have loved to have met Scotty. I think he and DJ came through about 8 or 9 years ago with an ETA show, were they would take pictures and sign autographs. Kicking my self for not going.

Scotty Moore, probably the best guitar wingman Elvis ever had. Elvis and the blue moon boys, probably the best sounds you'll ever hear.
I read about how Scotty and Bill were sidelined, Col wanted total control of Elvis, anything that got in the way was collateral damage . Elvis however i feel could and should have handled things better.
Scotty is a true musical genius and legend and comes across as very decent gent. .

I love all of them together too but I know Elvis tried but there were some intervening circustances such as the Colonel had the last say on so much especially money matters but I know Elvis did his best.The Colonel stupidly thought all bands were the same and could get them cheaper.Scotty knew The Colonel was the business manager and not Elvis.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts 44.... Scotty was a very good friend and I will share with you what a truly good person he was not only on video but one on one. He was the first musician to offer to give me one of his guitars for the museum. One of the very few that offered to give something to help and not drain my financial resources which for a project this big were strained constantly. I later paid him for his gift years later when I was able to take care of him. Thanks for your support.... Joe

I will share a quick story with you.....My Mom is 81 and she was a huge Elvis fan from early on(16 in 56). Well when I was little I played her Original RCA 45 of Hound Dog all the Time. My First album at age 6 was Elvis Golden Greats!!!!! So Elvis was my first foray into Music. So Elvis....SCOTTY and Bill mean so much to me along with the Jordanaires(HOUND DOG, Blue Christmas especially)!!!!!!

But Scotty always just seemed so kind to me!!!!!! The 68 Comeback special is just pure gold when it is just them on stage and he has Scotty with him and uses Scotty's 400 I believe.....DJ hitting the case just classic.

Maybe Joe could clear this up, but I heard Col. Tom Parker wouldn't let Elvis record a song unless they could retain publishing rights as well.

Abe... this is true.... when Elvis went to record at American Studio in Memphis January 1969 the Col. brought songs in to record. Producer Chips Moman said we’re not cutting those songs.. actually “that s-t! and was cutting off the recording console to leave and Elvis told the Col. to leave and stayed with Chips and the 827 Thomas St.Band which were the studio musicians at American. They took songs they planned to record on Neil Diamond and cut them on Elvis instead. suspicious minds, in the ghetto, Kentucky rain. Suspicious minds was the biggest record Elvis ever had. Elvis was smart and listened to Chips and not the Col.

He was great and so many are going to miss him. Scotty was not shot a square deal at all unfortunately. Great example of this was when he did the 1968 come back special. I would not wanted to have been him when asked to do that concert. The tare between self worth and money would have played a big part in my mind rather or not to do it. I would have done it only cause of the money. Elvis treated him terribly mostly because of Tom Parker, but still I have very little respect for Elvis in that regard. It is sad to think about. What is even worst is that amp he played that was 500 bucks he only used it for one recording which was Mystery Train.
Hi Michael..... yes it seems that Scotty, Bill and DJ got the short end of the stick mainly because they started out as a band and Elvis promised them, at least Bill and Scotty as the band’s name was their three names a much larger part of the income. They created that early sound together but make no mistake.... Elvis was the main reason things happened. Kinda the same deal as Johnny Cash and Luther and Marshall which I believe did end up in court with Marshall and Luther’s estate getting a settlement.By the way that 500 dollar amp Scotty bought he kept most of his life selling it for over 100,000 dollars. Anyone who w s young in the fifties and became a musician will tell you it’s Elvis that was the first sound that started it all off . PS the amplifier Scotty used on those early recordings must be worth a lot now let alone the guitar
