Thank you for the big-picture advice. Instead of using Rockwool and 1 layer of drywall, spend less and use pink + 2 layers of drywall and get better overall effectiveness. If your budget allows, sure, use Rockwool instead of pink, but 2 layers of drywall does more than pink vs wool with 1 layer. Pink is half the price per square foot vs Rockwool.

    Thanks for this.
One other suggestion, not sure if it has been covered, is to use a 2x6 plate on the bottom with 2x4 studs altenating sides.
This way, the drywall in room 1 is not connected to the drywall in room 2 further breaking that vibration medium for sound.

inside a wall the difference between R19 and rockwool is unnoticeable. Rock wool is slightly better for building corner bass traps, but if you just compress more R19 into the same space, again, works the same. I use Pink stuff for everything, because availability and cost to sq foot is just better. I just use more of it.

On my bedroom addition I put the pink insulation between that and kitchen. Also have solid pine six panel door. Worked well. Can’t hear much through that.

Sounds very truthful. You should create a box with different material and do a test with a microphone built into your phone. Use different insulations and sound editing material as another test

Can this pink fibreglass wool be inserted in a light fixture hole in the ceiling to block impact noise from neighbour above in an apartment?

I did try installing pink insulation in my ceiling to reduce sound transmission. I've put 2x R12 in my ceiling and saw next to no difference between with and without. Right now, i'm redoing with rockwould safe and sound to see the difference. In the end, you want mass and rockwoll really add way more mass then pink insulation. I'm curious to see the difference when I finished, specially for bass.

Let me know your findings. Decoupling the ceiling using resilient channels will work much better at illuminating those low frequency noises like stomping and vibrations.

Hi. Can I get your thoughts please on a different product. Deciboard. Any good or overpriced and can be done cheaper with drywall and M20 or MLV? Thank you

Is it dangerous to having a pink fiberglass exposed ceiling in utility room? If so how do you protect yourself. Should you encapsulate or replace? Who would do that work? Thank you for your expertise!

Thanks and I agree. My question is have you looked at the pink brands that now have 'sound reducing' varieties? They split the difference in cost between rockwool and the regular pink stuff. I wonder if that is an even more marginal difference for 20% extra or whatever (ie. not worth it). I will say though that some people claim rockwool helps absorb lower frequency sounds quit a bit better than the pink stuff, which the STC rating doesn't cover. I know flanking paths and other things make a bigger difference, but I wonder how much better it performs in these situations (If a neighbour on a party wall attaches the soundbar to the wall and the bass that comes with it)?

Fire resistance, not a thing, really? I think the people in Grenfell would have been grateful to have been sponsored by Rockwool.

Honestly if they had fire blocks they would not gave died. People die front the smoke not the flames. Fire blocks slows the spread

You need to give some actual hard data. You are saying the stc is higher, but somehow it doesn't matter? I don't know if you notice, but you are talking a lot, but not actually saying anything, especially not about practical soundproofing advice. Please don't advertise yourself as such.

I think he means judging using his ears, which is the ultimate gauge, as we pursue soundproofing to reduce our perception of noise, not to get better meter values. As far as technicals, it might have to do with the stacking of materials changing the overall STC, air gaps perhaps negating a lot of the effects and bringing the STC's closer. You'd have to investigate how the tests were done and whether they actually accurately resemble the actual home

I agree. Rockwool is better in a myriad of ways, and it's not anywhere near 50 percent more expensive.
