I’m a total sucker for modern nostalgia. But there is one huge reason why that I think is a big impact for a lot of people - the toys now are screen accurate as if they walked off the tv screen. I always didn’t understand why the toys didn’t look exactly like the shows when I was a kid (I understand why now of course), and now that they do I can’t help myself. Takara Transformers masterpiece, NECA TMNT cartoon, Mattel He-Man Origins cartoon collection, upcoming Mondo Real Ghostbusters, Super 7 GI Joe RAH, Super 7 ThunderCats, etc. If the new versions didn’t look exactly like the cartoon I don’t know if I would even really be collecting them at all. Not saying others wouldn’t but I feel that is a big driver around the nostalgia.

The modern figures are what we as kids Invisioned our toys to look like. Even though they were so vastly different from what we saw on screen... We saw our figures as exact replicas of what we saw on screen. Our imagination filled in the gaps!
Today...we can have exactly what we saw back then, but better!

I have that so-called nostalgia for old toys and comicbooks.
My wife doesn't care and she has my ATM card.

Time to say Bye Bye to that one.
There are words to describe your predicament, none of which are nice.
Perhaps, you should watch the BetterBachelor, or RichCooper and some others to get Red Pilled.
Good Luck to you my friend

i had punch/counter punch as a kid one of my fav G1s....always wanted a mp of him.....when xtb hinted at one i was all in....was excited they made two versions so i got one of each for each shelf....just so they were a little diff....im nostalgic for the mps cause they fit more of what my child mind imagined the G1 was in the 80s....just had to wait 40 yrs for the figures to catch up with my child imagination

This certainly applies to all the modern MP Minibots I've bought. I thought they were trash as a kid. The modern MP versions of those characters are far nicer and I actually like them these days.

12:05 I think it was fansproject that made ninja stylized versions of the insecticons in G1 and G2 colors. I think they were called casualties, which made me think of insects just being like cannon fodder.
As for modern nostalgia as you defined it, just about all modern lines are it for me. I maybe had half a dozen joes and star wars figures as a kid, now I have hundreds of modern takes. Really, as a kid, mainly collected He-Man, then TFs, then M.A.S.K., but was a fan of other cartoons at the time, but didn't have many (or any) of their toys... some brands of none as a kid, but a dozen plus as an adult: Thundercats, Silverhawks, TMNT, DnD, Flash Gordon, Terminator, Robocop... basically S7 ultimates and neca modern takes fill those and other voids.
Crazy how games like SF2, MK and Tekken are ~30years old, yet recent years have been making figures for those brands. But that's another itch.
I think the _"gateway"_ into adult collecting was me realizing Japan had various renditions of VF-1's when I was out there in 1999... then when I was settling into a career aout 10-years later, and a sister was using ebay to purchase meaningful gifts for our father (because of what we knew he liked years prior), I gave eBay a try for some of my nostalgia and was picking up numerous versions of my favorite childhood toy's mold... *_JETFIRE!_* I was buying various color variants of the bandai, tatsunoko, joon's and customs done for Robotech/Macross Valkyries/Veritechs. The 1/55, chunky monkey, scale and then dipping toes in other scales and companies for Macross characters.

    Great topic Mike!
I’m not sure if I’m going through “modern nostalgia” OR good Ol’ FOMO hahaha, but my Transformers collection back in the day was small & centred around most of the lead characters in the show & movie. In the past few years it’s the recurring characters - mostly autobot characters due to the good vs evil volume discrepancy - but not as far into the character rabbit hole as you are. I’m glad there are brands like X-Transbots who are producing those more background type characters for the serious collectors 😊

I could go for new delux insecticons and autobot/decepticon twins. Just recently got into the Japanese G1 continuity. Beyond Starsabre and Overlord. Transformers I didn't know existed. Love it.

I was almost 100% OUT of the Transformers Line after the Movie.
I Didn't care for the Aesthetics, nor the lame as, Heff, transformations, that were worse than the originals, nor the colors, and gew characters were memorable.
I did enjoy the movie, and I actually cheered on Megatron. I was a great movie. I was 12 when it came out.
I get where you are coming from, and I do enjoy the Modern Takes on many of these characters, they are definitely superior in everyway.
That being said, I have only a handful of them, and almost all are Decepticons.
Although, I am, day by day, being tempted to do the Movie Figures to one day do a few Dioramas when I get the time.
As for the other lines, I LOVE GI JOE, HasBlow has Heffed that up, and every time I think they get back on track, they, much like Lucy, pull the Football away at the last instant.
Happy with what I got for SW the Black Series, still waiting for my DEATHSTAR GUNNER! C'mon HasBlow get with it.
Love the 2 lines of Silverhawks, my pocket book an't afford it though.
Love the MOTU Origins, got into it, and the Figs have had noticeably increases in Price Points. Such a Shame.
Wish RaMan Toys were more reasonably priced, LOVE their MASK, but again'C'mon do a 3.75/4 inch line. It's like 80-85% there.
Looking forward to a few 3P companies making 6 inch Joe Vehicles. But comes down to Price Point.
Robotech, just pick a line and stick with it, Seems no one 3P finishes the line, and there's lots of room to expand. Disappointment.

By the time characters like Sixshot and Fort Max were introduced back in the late 80s, I had already moved on from the hobby. Now I have the modern iterations of that era.

Honestly, This isn't a thing for me, as my G1 collection as an adult consists primarily of toys I either had as a kid or wished I'd had but couldn't acquire at the time, and my Masterpiece collection covers the same characters. If I ever did actually go outside of that for an MP figure - say, the X-Transbots versions of Runamok and Runabout - I wouldn't really chalk it up to a sense of nostalgia, just an interest of "oh hey look, here's a toy of that character which actually doesn't suck!"

For me, it was Cosmos, Runabout, Runamuck, and Percepter. Funnily enough, I have 2 by xtransbots Cosmos and Percepter, and the other two on order. Don't really have an opinion on the company I get to buy in regards to the two Decepticons. XTB has been doing some really great work over the last couple of years. So I expect these will be no exception.

Closest I can think of is defenders of the earth. Only had the Phantom as a kid in the 80s but wasnt interested in the others. As an adult, I have all of the modern Neca versions....except for the Phantom actually lol.

I still want to better MP Sunstreaker because I really have not been that impressed with what they have come out with. That & a lot of the second wave of the mini bots weren't made. Apart from outback, pipes, and swerve being stepped on by Trypticon, they had no representation in the cartoon. They are in the comic, but not to show. I would also like to see more of the cassettes being made. Like stripes and the wolf (I forgot his name at the moment). There is a rat that is a cassette for blaster, as well as a scorpion, and maybe a few others that could be produced. Like to combiner dinosaur cassettes that they have not even touched yet. Even making botch the crab would be a nice touch for Soundwave. And I don't think anybody's done a good enough job on the monster bus. I like to see them redone.
