Last summer a sparrow flew into my window accidentally and was stunned sitting on the deck a Bluejay flew down next to him roll him over and literally used his beak to press on the sparrows stomach until the little bird started breathing again. Then he flipped him back over onto his feet and waited until the little guy flew away....I was amazed!!

At an apartment complex where I formerly lived I would put out bread in the front yard for the birds and squirrels. An older male Blue Jay would come every day and sit in my next door neighbor's tree and yell for me. If I didn't come outside right away my neighbor would call me to let me know that I was being paged. Here's the kickers: I'd always go outside and say "Hello my Blue Jay friend!" and then we'd have a nice conversation. All that food around yet he wanted to talk first and then he wouldn't touch any food on the ground, he wanted me to throw down fresh just for him! He trained me somehow.
A year later he was still coming by but now he brought a male Blue Jay friend with him. He was teaching this one that here was a friendly food supplier. It wasn't long after that that I no longer saw the old man. But his legacy came every day and we'd talk and I'd put down fresh food. Sometimes my neighbor would call me (she loved the whole scenario). I came to have MS and some neighbors on my other side who were drunken, yucky people so we moved and bought a nearby house. I tried yelling out the car window to him and even had my spouse play Blue Jay calls outside our house but I never saw him again. I'll always cherish the time I had with him and the old man.

He was a great loving pet that spent much of his day on my shoulder. He also had quite a vocabulary. He spoke many phrases. My favorite was; "Hey Bob, Do you want a coke?" Blue Jays have *amazing* abilities to make sounds and also to imitate other birds. Lang Elliott, a man well-known for recording birds, says on two of his bird song CDs that Blue Jays are capable of perhaps the widest range of vocalizations of any bird. Now, even if they are not #1, being near the top is quite a feat! On one CD, he plays (IIRC) 20 different types of calls and songs.
Just the other day, I thought I heard a Laughing Gull. I simply don't hear those around my house, so it was rather unusual. (However, they do live nearby, since they frequent any large river or body of water in New Jersey - where I live.) I finally found the "gull" - it was a Blue Jay.

They are very smart birds, when they see a cat or raven close by they will make so much noise that alerts the squirrels and other birds. They hide food in all places my patio is filled with a lot of oak seeds. If my bird feeder is empty they fly over the glass door to tap often till it gets filled. They keep my yard free from insects. Feeding them is an added benefit. Bad part is that they hide a lot of wild plant seeds in the yard which will often grow up.

Hard core Blue Jay advocate as well! My favorite Jay experience- we had a pile of dead leaves in the back yard and it was mating season. One of the males got on the pile of leaves, spread his wings and tail out fully and flattened himself. It was the most gorgeous display I have ever seen! I felt so blessed to witness it. We have hawks and kites and they love to do a scream and scatter everyone. It always makes me laugh. Also, down here we call the squeaky gate call magic bells- there is a drastic difference between northern and southern Blue Jay vocals. Thanks for your videos and bird love!

I loved blue jays long before I heard about their bad rap. I had a blue jay friend for a while, who I called 'Jay Jay.' He used to tell me when the squirrel would go after my bird feeder, so I could go shoo the squirrel away (squirrels nearly broke my feeder). I'd go back inside and a few minutes later, Jay Jay would be calling for me again. Sure enough, the squirrel was back climbing the feeder. Jay Jay was cute. I gave him extra treats.

I was so happy to find this site. Last year I moved into a home and since the last owner left me a bird feeder on the clothesline and some seed, I took over his responsibilities. I had up to 10 jays by the end of the year! This spring started out calm until the land across the street was clear-cut...yuck...I had been watching food-carrying behavior by the jays from my feeder to the tops of those trees across the street. One the third day...ta..da...I had a flock of bluejays of several different age groups. They had brought their fledglings over and it was noisy for another few days! I put out several types of feed and bought out our towns supply of peanut suet nuggets since they swallow two or three themselves and then carry the fourth with them

Many species were made extinct in some areas of my country because they upset the grouse that were being raised to be shot (I'm not going to start on why "trophy hunting" is for the sick of mind...). The ecosystems flat-lined. Eg with no natural predators, rabbits quickly got out of hand and basically ate the plants needed for the other key species. As a result the few pairs that were left in other parts of the country had to have protection - not just legal, but physical protection - and over the decades they've been reintroduced to the places they'd been wiped from. The ecosystems are now improving.

The blue jay may have planted the sunflower seed for himself, or the gardener.
When hunting, many consider the blue jay a nusience because of giving away the hunter's location. It's just the opposite: the jay is the hunter's scout, and also tells the hunter he's moving too fast.
Put out a bowl of chicken egg shells to supply birds with calcium.

Great video! Blue Jays are some of my favorite to observe. I have never found them to be mean or bully birds. I find them to be very cautious and methodical particularly with birds of similar size such as red winged black birds and grackles. They always seem to avoid confrontation with them. They do spook smaller birds but that is probably just a size thing. That said, they don't seem to mind sharing with Cardinals as they often feed together in my yard.

I agree. The only bird I've seen to be confrontational with other birds their size are Red-bellied Woodpeckers. They'll stand their ground with any - Grackles, Starlings, Cowbirds etc. Fun to watch...

True but what she didn't tell you in the video is they take other nestling to feed to their young. Maybe she does not know.

Also did say how some jays are lazy and lay their eggs in smaller bird nests to raise their young.

@@putteslaintxtbks5166 Sounds like a very intelligent trait, humans do similar things, surrogates, baby sitters, nanny's, adoption, etc. Might even be a willing thing the smaller bird will do for protection maybe? Or like a sly lazy trick these birds figured out long ago lol :)

A big old Blue Jay recently took up residence in a tree in my back yard, and while he or she is very vocal I'm cool they chose my tree as a home lol

Hi! What a wonderful video! I have many Blue Jays around my home. They are gorgeous birds but they have always annoyed me because they are so loud and bossy. I have 3 sweet crows that come every morning for their little pieces of bread I spread out for them along with their seeds. Some mornings the Jays are swooping down WHILE I’m still outside spreading my crows bread cubes. I will admit that they have actually made me laugh out loud a few times. I must say that your video has given me the greatest reasons to admire those bossy beauties. I will always think differently of them now! I thank you for that. I subscribed and can’t wait to see what else you have. Bird watching is such a joy! Caroline

A Bluejay landed on my bird feeder today and I just smiled and watched it eat. They are such beautiful birds!!! And I also have a cardinal pair that comes back over and over again to eat too. I love watching them and drinking my coffee. :)

I never really tried to attract blue jays to my yard until I watched this video last fall. I started buying peanuts and would put those out for them. It took a few days to start seeing them regularly, and I am really happy I started trying to attract them.
I have seen videos of birds hiding food, and even see it occasionally. Once the blue jays became common, I really saw it happening a lot. There is one blue jay that would hide peanuts all over the back yard. It was comical watching him (her??) move leaves around to cover the peanuts..
Ive also seen video's of birds robbing another's cache - something I have never seen in the wild until the other day. There was a red bellied woodpecker who kept going back and forth to a tree in the back yard. The blue jay that hides all the peanuts in the yard was going from the ground to the tree, finding things on the ground to eat. Once the woodpecker flew away and did not come back for a couple mintes, the jay went into the tree and emtied his stash.
I'm happy I found your videos Lesley, they have been a great source of information. Thanks for what you do =)
