  • Here is the Q&A we filmed with veterans John Dennett and Henry Rice on 3 June 2024. Thank you to the veterans for their time, and to the Spirit of Normandy Trust to bringing the veterans to our museum.
Questions came from members of the public online, and serving military personnel in the room.
John joined the Royal Navy in 1942 and brought LST 322 (a Landing Ship, Tank) from the US, taking part in Operation Torch (North Africa) and Operation Husky (Sicily). His ship went in to Sword Beach on D-Day to offload troops and heavy equipment, making 15 further crossing of the Channel from June until August.
Henry was Signalman serving on HMS Eastway - which was a Landing Ship, Dock - used to supply men and equipment as needed to the various beaches. HMS Eastway sailed as part of Convoy ETM13 and arrived off Juno Beach on D-Day +5. From this position the ship was able to supply all the Allied beaches as required.
