  • Mazda valve stem seals class action settlement program for excessive oil consumption and oil consumption powertrain warranty extension service program SSPD5. In conjunction with a Class Action Settlement, Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct an extension of the Engine powertrain warranty related to excessive oil consumption. In addition, there is a Reimbursement Program, for limited qualifying out-of-pocket expenses (prior oil changes and additional oil purchased before the normal oil change interval due to oil consumption concerns) on certain CX-9, CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3, and CX-30 vehicles equipped with a 2.5L turbocharged engine with the affected valve stem seals.
    All current and former owners (class members) that are eligible will be notified by JND Legal Administration, who was appointed by the court to administer the class action settlement. Any Class Members with questions regarding the reimbursement program can visit www.MazdaValveStemSealSettlement.com, call toll-free 1-877-231-0642, write Mazda Valve Stem
    Seal Settlement, c/o JND Legal Administration, PO Box 91414, Seattle, WA 98111, or email
    info@MazdaValveStemSealSettlement.com to see if their vehicle is eligible.
    The class action affects class members within any of the 50 U.S. States, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Territories, whose covered vehicles (1) experienced the Low Engine Oil Warning Indication light before the recommended service/oil change interval of 7,500 miles or 1 year, or (2)
    has had the oil refilled before the warning light (“Low Engine Oil Level”) came on if the customer or dealer noticed that the oil level was too low before the regular service/oil change interval.
    Benefits provided under the Special Service Program SSPD5:
    This program provides the following benefits: The Special Service Program SSPD5 covers repairs for 7 years (84 months) or 84,000 miles for oil consumption related issues only (including for engine repair/replacement due to oil consumption issues/related to the valve stem seals).
    This SSP will not cover other unrelated powertrain items such as transmission, differential or engine failure not related to oil consumption.
    Some vehicles are excluded from the Settlement Class and SSPD5. A list of exclusions can be found at
    www.MazdaValveStemSealSettlement.com.

    The leaking seals on the valves is a problem Mazda has had since their first international cars. I had a brand new Capella (616) 1600cc car in 1975 and it consumed oil unnecessarily. Mazda eventually agreed to replace the seals at no cost to me. It was well within warranty period but it took a long time for them to accept the need for repair and to own up to the issue. I expect all the tools used in this video are well known to Mazda if the problem is historical. There was no class action in Australia back in 1975 and certainly no warranty extension offered. Other than the seals the car was really good as long as I had it.

      Too bad you don't still have that car. I think it would be considered a classic in America. Was it a coup, or a sedan? When you owned it, did you every wish that you went for the rotary option? I'm sure those consumed oil.

    From what I heard from a few people in the Mazda forums if you installed a burger motorsports oil catch can it’s will help slow down the oil consumption problem with the turbo engines. I have bought one but haven’t installed it yet because right now I haven’t had a problem with it yet. However I’m planning on installing it soon.

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před měsícem +2

      I don't know exactly how that will help. Then again I don't know everything. I do know that as far as oil catch cans go. Burger Motorsports is one of the better ones. A catch can is hooked up to the PCV system on your engine to catch contaminants due to blowby through your piston rings from combustion. It keeps those contaminants from going back into the engine and causing deposits to build up on your intake valves (especially in a direct injection engine). The only way I see it helping oil consumption issues is that maybe it relieves excessive crank case pressures that could possibly cause seals to leak or oil to get pushed past the oil rings and into the combustion chamber. Now, turbo charged engines will definitely benefit from a catch can for other reasons. But remember. Oil in a catch can is not oil in your engine. The stuff the catch can collects, should be disposed of. Open one of your intercooler tubes and see if there is a build up of oil in the intercooler. Excessive oil getting into the intercooler is what the catch can is supposed to prevent.

    2021 CX-9, had my valve stems replaced 09/23 at 16k miles. Engine was burning some oil over the winter, but the problem reappeared with vengeance in hot weather. Had an oil change at independent shop last month(filed up to 8/10 unlike dealer that that overfills it), went on a 600 mile family road trip and burned about half a quart of oil to low level code. Seems like "burning is especially prevalent in hot weather. Either stem valves were replaced incorrectly or some other issue. Mazda's manual does say a quart in 1000 miles, however updated TSB 05/20/24 says if during consumption test more than 8 oz is used in 2000km (1200 miles) than contact mazda tech hotline.

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Wow. 8oz. in 1200 miles is not that much. The spec. I get is one quart every 1200 miles. I don't see a TSB 05/20/24 or 05-020/24. If you're talking about SSPD5 its bulletin number is 01-007/24 and does not give the spec. However, it does say if the customer returns after valve stem seal replacement, then contact Mazda Hotline for further instructions. So, I would say take the vehicle back to the dealer. Get them to fix it correctly. Then again. There are other things that can cause oil consumption.

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před 3 měsíci +3

      No need for any of that. The piston at top dead center gives very little room for the valve to drop.

    I have this engine in my 2021 Mazda 6 and in 3,000 miles the oil level goes from the top hole on the dipstick to the bottom hole. So I guess I have the oil consumption problem ? I’m afraid of getting this fix done in case it is not done correctly and makes the problem worse, as is some people’s experience.

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před 12 dny

      From the top hole to the bottom hole is about one quart. In 3000 miles, that is not excessive oil consumption as per Mazda. One quart every 1200 miles is normal according to Mazda.

    My dealer claims that the sparkplugs do not have to be removed for this job. Do you think this maintenance can be done without removing the sparkplugs?

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před 18 dny

      Yes it can. If you can tell that the piston is at top dead center just by looking at the exhaust and intake valves and the camshaft rotations. You don't have to remove the plugs. If a technician has done this job enough times, they could probably tell. But, the procedure says to remove the spark plugs and use a long screwdriver to locate the piston to top dead center. If you remove the valve stem seal and the piston is too far down. You could drop a valve into the cylinder. Then the cylinder head has to come of in order to fix it. To me, it's not worth it. Mistakes can happen.

  • @Eternalblue17
    @Eternalblue17 Před 20 dny

    Does the TSB state to address oil consumption issues by addressing the exhaust valve stem seals only? I understand why one may think the exhaust valve stem seals may be bad on a turbo charged engine; I'm curious if the intake valve stem seals are also a possibility and if that is mentioned in the TSB. Thanks!

    • @ShopForemanGarage
      @ShopForemanGarage  Před 20 dny +1

      @Eternalblue17 it only addresses exhaust valve stem seals. Of course, anything could happen at any time. So this doesn't mean something else couldn't be causing oil consumption. The exhaust seals are the only thing covered in this warranty extension.

      I wish I could help you. Unfortunately, Mazda did not come out with a diesel engine in America until 2019. It was the CX-5 Skyactive Diesel engine and I believe was mostly sold in California. I have actually never seen one. I believe it did not help very much on fuel economy and after one year, Mazda pulled the plug. I have taken courses on the Skyactive diesel, but that was a long time ago. Never worked on one but, the Mazda parts dept. still has Mazda DEF fluid on the shelf.
