  • Travel video about destination Macedonia.
Macedonia is a young Balkan republic that is a combination of both Orient and Occident. Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the Vardar River Valley. It has a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years and forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unite both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia and in the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in the city. Ottoman rule began in 1392 and lasted for more than five hundred years. Near the village of Glumovo is the Bogorodica Monastery that was founded in the fourteenth century and is active again today. The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

@@andypella6068 I've been on some of those places and they really are beautiful, like you say, but I don't understand why you are insulting me for what your country did many years ago, at the " UN Conference of standardisation of geographical names " held in Athens in 1977 not 55 . Now your country had a different aproach to "Macedonian " issue in a different periods . You would be surprised what your church and later your country promoted at the beginning (even publishing a school books for them)among the slavophonic population (present there for about 15 centuries now ) during the Μακεδονικός Αγώνας and how the Macedonian self-consciousness was important to be spread among this people, so Greece itself is quite responsible for the present situation too , also Serbia and Bulgaria , because all three parts were playing on this " Macedonism card " and most likley, from your poin of view, they fucked up, but at that time it seemed a good thing. About ancient Hellenistic culture- which is great by the way ,you probably know that it has been accepted by whole world, altough spread by "semi barbaric Macedonians " how some ancient "true Greek" historians called them because this "true greeks" were incapable of spreading the it, enclosed in their city states and in their minds, like you maybe? So you cannot ask for exclusivity on it because whole or a big part of the world embraced it and living by its principals, in some places even more than in today, semi-theocratic Greece , it is the legacy of Alexander and your Macedonian for father's who wasnt narrow minded and restricted to a Greek world only , inviting all peoples and races in unity. A, and yes I've been to Babylon also, there is still the procession street made of clay tiles and bitumen where Alexander married thousands of his soldiers to a Babylonian women in a single day , since I lived in Iraq for some time I can tell you that people there calls him Iskandar Maqidoni not Great which is interesting. Anyhow, maybe instead of insulting ,hating , isolating and dividing you -we should try understanding, uniting and educating your neighbours, with which you might have more things in common than differences.

I was 18 years old teenager when I came to Greece, and 25 years old grown man when I left. I didn't have parents, my parents was Greece, I didn't have family, my family were the Greek people. They gave me unconditional love, and passion, they taught me how to be a hard working man, and to chase my dreams unstoppably, they taught me how to forgive and forget and how to love and respect others. I'm from north of Iraq and in this part of the country you'll find a lot of blonde people like myself especially in the Christian' people's communities. On the part of Greeks being racist I don't necessarily agree with you, if you learn Greek, respect the culture, try to integrate with the people, you'll be accepted into the Greek family regardless of the color of your skin. There are a lot of "blonde" Albanians, Russians, European Muslims..etc in Greece they suffer from "racism", why the Greeks don't accept them since they're blonde?!! The fact of the matter is these people refuse to integrate in the Greek culture and learn to speak Greek properly, they want to bring all their bad habits (corruption, prostitution, aggression, and religion extremism) from the countries they escaped from and impose them on the Greek people, that's why the Greeks get agitated and frustrated with these type of foreigners.

The ancient Macedonians regarded the Greeks as potentially dangerous
neighbors, never as kinsmen. The Greeks stereotyped the Macedonians
as "barbarians" and treated them in the same bigoted manner in which they treated all non-Greeks. Herodotus, the Father of History, relates how the Macedonian king Alexander I(498-454 BC), a Philhellene (that is "a friend of the Greeks" and logically a non-Greek),
wanted to take a part in the Olympic games. The Greek athletes protested,
saying they would not run with a barbarian. Historian Thucydidis also calls the Macedonians barbarians, and so did Thracymachus who called Archelaus a barbarian who enslaved Greeks. Demosthenes, the great Athenian statesman and orator, spoke of Philip II as:
"... not only no Greek, nor related to the Greeks,
but not even a barbarian from any place that can be named with honors,
but a pestilent knave from Macedonia, whence it was never yet possible
to buy a decent slave." [Third Philippic, 31]
The Macedonian "barbarian" defeated Greece at the battle of Chaeronea in August 338 BC and appointed himself "Commander of the Greeks". This battle had established Macedonian hegemony over Greece and this date is commonly taken as the end of Greek history and the beginning of the Macedonian era. Greece did not regain its independence until 1827 AD.

If one wishes to believe that Alexander had a policy of hellenization-as opposed to the incidental
and informal spread of Greek culture-the evidence must come from sources other than those presented here.
One wonders-archaeology aside-where this evidence would be.

Александар од Македонија Bottom line Eugene Borza best case scenario is that he can't prove either way (He says it himself) if the Macedonians were one of many greek tribe in the area or that they were some other group that did not belong in that group. So the only thing left is history and that my friend leans heavily in the greek side. if you can dig up some thing
that you found, some other (Macedonian language) that is not greek or any shred of evidence that points to a Macedonian existence then i will be willing to say that you are right. Put the fact is even if there existed a separate people like The Macedonians Why are your names Slavic. so you would not belong to those people anyway, because slavic people dis not come to southern Europe tell 800 years after alexander was born, so how can you claim that you are Macedonian and the greeks are not?

As for me all i have to do is walk any were in my country and i can see my history they don't have to teach me in school. so good luck to you. if you aver visit Greece please come to Pella, Greece the home of Alexander the Great.

I can see my history all around me too. I don't think it's just a blog. You have all the books point out, all the historians, just look how many of them are. And what they say, and I can bet all of the Historians the Greeks point out are just Greek historians and maybe a couple of other, or some historians with Greek roots, so they have to cheer their side. It's funny how you signed the region Macedonia in 1914 as a new gained territory, and did not have a problem until 1991 about the name. Never in history before that you wanted nor said that Macedonia belonged to Greece.. And as a matter of fact Greece belonged to Macedonia at one point in History..
but we'll leave that for another day.
      Cheers

Александар од Македонија if you mean you see history around you like the new buildings and statues they have build you are right. But that is not history unless you think history is 20-30 years in the making. like i said if you can show the world something that will indicate that Macedonians existed as a separate group in ancient times. Then i would support what you are saying.

    • @user-cp6ph3mk7n
      @user-cp6ph3mk7n Před 8 lety +2

      +Natalia Díaz Greece alleges that:
The Macedonians should not be recognized as Macedonians because the Macedonians have been of Greek nationality since 2000 BC
      Those Macedonians whose language
belongs to the Slavic family of languages, must not call themselves
Macedonians because 4000 years ago, the Macedonians spoke Greek and still speak nothing but Greek.
Macedonia has no right to call itself by this name because Macedonia has always been and still is a region of Greece.
      The Macedonians affirm that:
The ancient Macedonians were a distinct European people, conscious and proud of their nationality, their customs, their language, and their name. The same applies to the modern Macedonians today.
      The ancient Macedonians regarded
the ancient Greeks as neighbors, not as kinsmen. The Greeks treated
the Macedonians as foreigners ("barbarians") whose native language was Macedonian, not Greek.
Macedonia was never a region of
Greece. On the contrary, ancient Greece was subjected to Macedonia.
In 1913, modern Greece and her Balkan allies partitioned Macedonia.
If today a portion of Macedonia belongs to Greece, it is by virtue
of an illegal partition of the whole and occupation of a part of Macedonia.
These assertions will be shown to be true in the eyes of history proving
the absurdity of Greek allegations against the people of Macedonia.

    • @user-cp6ph3mk7n
      @user-cp6ph3mk7n Před 8 lety +2

+Natalia Díaz There is no evidence that the ancient Greeks ever settled prehistoric Macedonia. Archeological evidence shows that ancient Macedonia lay beyond the cultural and ethnic borders of the Bronze Age Mycenaean Greek Civilization, which ends at the border of northern Thessaly (1400 - 1100 BC).
The prehistoric Macedonians show a remarkable continuation of existing material culture.

    • @user-cp6ph3mk7n
      @user-cp6ph3mk7n Před 8 lety +3

+Natalia Díaz And now the main part, why Greece claims Macedonia, because of profit and political interests.
In 1827, the European powers intervened on behalf of the Greek rebels and forced the Turks to grant them independence. The same powers, established the first modern Greek state, chose Prince Otto of Bavaria to be the "King of the Hellenes", and sent him to Athens. Serbia freed herself also from the Turkish rule, while Russia declared war on Turkey to help Bulgaria gain its independence.
On October 8, 1912, the First Balkan War begun. Montenegro, Serbia,
Bulgaria, and Greece attacked the European positions of the Ottoman
Empire. More than 100,000 Macedonians also took active part and
contributed in driving the Turks out of Macedonia. Turkey capitulated
soon, but Macedonia did not free itself. The victorious Balkan kingdoms convened in Bucharest in August 1913 to divide the spoils.
Greece was awarded Aegean Macedonia and renamed it to "Northern Greece"; Bulgaria annexed Pirin Macedonia and abolished the Macedonian name, and Serbia took over Vardar Macedonia and renamed it to "Southern Serbia".The same year, N. Pasich of Serbia and E. Venizelos of Greece agreed on the newly formed Greek-Serbian (later Yugoslavian) border, so that there would be "only Serbs to the North and only Greeks to the South", and no "Macedonians" on
either side. Thus, the politics to assimilate the Macedonians of
      Aegean Macedonia had already begun.
On June 21, 22, and 23, 1913, the Greek army completely burned to the ground the city of Kukush (today Kilkis), known for its resistance against Hellenism in the XIX century and the birthplace of Gotse Delchev.
Between June 29 and 25, 39 villages in the Kukush area were also burned down.
On June 23 and 24, the city of Serres (today Serrai) was set on fire where 4000 houses perished. In the Serres gymnasium the Greeks murdered about 200 people.
During these days the larger portion of Strumica was also destroyed by the Greek army.
Between June 23 and 30, many villages in the Drama and Serres districts were burned down.
From June 27 to July 6 all Macedonian quarts of Salonika were set on fire.
The Carnegie Commission composed of members from USA, Germany, Russia, France, Austria, and England, witnessed the Greek atrocities when
visited Aegean Macedonia. Their final conclusion was that the Greek
army has burned to the ground 170 villages with over 17,000 houses.
Since 1913, official Greece has been trying to banish native Macedonian
names of villages, towns, cities, rivers, and lakes in Aegean Macedonia.
For example, the little stream which issues from Mount Olympus and
flows into the Aegean Sea is labeled Mavroneri ("black water") on the maps made by Greek cartographers after 1913.
However, the same river appears as Crna Reka, a native Macedonian name meaning "black river" on the maps made before 1913. Kukush has been dropped for Kilkis and Serres for Serai, together with at least 300 other places all over Macedonia.

Read this and it will explain that alexander the great Was greek, and is part of ancient greek history The country Macedonia which was part of Yugoslavia, a communist country that does not exist any more broke away from Yugoslavia and is trying to say that they are the original Macedonians. Trying to steal greek history. They are really Bulgarians who use the same alphabet. So in fact they are stealing greek and Bulgarian history.
III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 BC - 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégas [a.lék.san.dros ho mé.gas], from the Greek ἀλέξω (alexō) "defend" and ἀνδρ- (andr-), the stem of ἀνήρ (anēr) "man" and means "protector of men"iii[›]), was a King (Basileus) of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon[1][2][3][4] and a member of the Argead dynasty, an ancient Greek royal house. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander succeeded his father, Philip II, to the throne at the age of twenty. He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to Egypt into northwest India and modern-day Pakistan.[5] He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.[6]
During his youth, Alexander was tutored by the philosopher Aristotle until the age of 16. After Philip's assassination in 336 BC, Alexander succeeded his father to the throne and inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. Alexander was awarded the generalship of Greece and used this authority to launch his father's Panhellenic project to lead the Greeks in the conquest of Persia.[7][8] In 334 BC, he invaded the Achaemenid Empire, ruled Asia Minor, and began a series of campaigns that lasted ten years. Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, most notably the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. He subsequently overthrew the Persian King Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety.i[›] At that point, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.
Seeking to reach the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea", he invaded India in 326 BC, but was eventually forced to turn back at the demand of his troops. Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC, the city he planned to establish as his capital, without executing a series of planned campaigns that would have begun with an invasion of Arabia. In the years following his death, a series of civil wars tore his empire apart, resulting in several states ruled by the Diadochi, Alexander's surviving generals and heirs.
Alexander's legacy includes the cultural diffusion his conquests engendered, such as Greco-Buddhism. He founded some twenty cities that bore his name, most notably Alexandria in Egypt. Alexander's settlement of Greek colonists and the resulting spread of Greek culture in the east resulted in a new Hellenistic civilization, aspects of which were still evident in the traditions of the Byzantine Empire in the mid-15th century and the presence of Greek speakers in central and far eastern Anatolia until the 1920s. Alexander became legendary as a classical hero in the mold of Achilles, and he features prominently in the history and mythic traditions of both Greek and non-Greek cultures. He became the measure against which military leaders compared themselves, and military academies throughout the world still teach his tactics.[9]ii[›] He is often ranked among the most influential people in human history, along with his teacher Aristotle.[10]
