As a hairstylist, don't worry we don't mind. I get "I could just fall asleep right now" from every single client, that gets a little annoying but we have to remember that each person is different so it's not them that's repeating it.

Oh thank god they’re talking to their coworker…”
I’m an ambivert, but predominantly introverted hairdresser. If my clients want to talk, I’ll entertain them, but I really do enjoy silence because it’s peaceful and they also move less when they’re not talking 😭 I don’t judge them for being talkative/quiet. I do really want them to be honest with me when I ask them if they’re happy with their hair, I want them to be completely comfortable and happy with me and my work. Take this in mind the next time you feel anxious at the hairdresser’s

Nothing quite compares to the feeling of when you decide to break the silence and make an attempt at conversation with your hairdresser... but they give you a one sentence reply and it immediately falls into awkward silence again 😔
It's why I quit hairdressing. I felt so bad when I had days where I was socially inept. Its a part of the job they can't teach you. Now I just chatter nonstop when I'm getting a cut. And yes. I ask how long they have been at it. They are doing a service, and hoping for a longterm client. It's normal.

I look around and see other people engaged in like full laughter and conversation with their stylists and I’m just like “...” I debate whether I should ask them a personal question or compliment them to get something started or like an intelligent question. or should I try to be funny. ITS SO HARD. I swear every cell in my body shuts down and goes into full panic mode lol
Aww, don’t be worried. Often times if the hairdresser wants to talk they will initiate conversation, but coming from an introverted hairdresser a lot of the time I just like to stay focused🤗

My favorite question to ask the hairdresser is what their favorite haircut to do is. They always seem intrigued by the question and I find it interesting to hear. At the place I go to, I find most people love to do simple. I also love it when it's just quiet...the feeling of getting my hair cut is soo relaxing to me
This seems to be the go-to small talk for new clients, across services. I’m a spray tan tech and I get that question with almost every new client. (It’s forgivable, small talk is awkward enough when you’re NOT naked 😂)
Sure but they probably get the question 3 times an hour and get tired of it. Plus, it sometimes comes off as just filler and that you’re just using a default, empty question to fill the silence. Like talking about the weather 😂. If you don’t care to know the answer, you really shouldn’t ask the question. Edit: Just to add I don’t think there’s anything bad about asking this question if you actually just want to chat. I know a few hairdressers and they’d be happy to chat about their career with anyone that asks about it. Just explaining the thought process.
