As a child in the 1950s, I listened as my mother sang Choctaw hymns when she washed the supper dishes. She was forbidden to speak the Choctaw Language when she attended the Wheelock Academy for Girls in the 1930s at Millerton, Oklahoma.

Going through a battle with my mother and father (who kidnapped my children) who never let me have anything to do with my Choctaw heritage (my grandfather on my dads side was a medicine man). I was raised Christian and anytime I had any interest in my heritage, it got shushed. Hearing this song, beings tears to my eyes as I burn sage and pray I am reunited with my babies soon. I live in Texas but will be in Oklahoma soon for court to fight for them. Prayers are appreciated as this is something I knew would happen if I didn't conform to thier religious beliefs. 💔

I am happy that before she died my Grandmother she told us that she was 1/4 Choctaw. Dark complected, and dark eyed she was shamed through her youth in Oklahoma. She would knock anyone across the room for a racist comment, and she was short but as strong as a linebacker. We in the late 70's were proud and happy to find out that we had a smidgen of Native ancestry.
