So should you cut your hair yourself? Should you be cutting your hair yourself? I would say no, don't do it. Nothing is better than a professional doing it.
But if you really have to, there is one thing, with long hair, that you actually can do. It's one chop. So I'm going to show you.
You will need to take all of your hair and actually brush everything. So it's brushing or combing everything forward. Then go all the way to the end. And what happens here, you will take the scissor and just cut that straight off. What that will do is actually keep all the length that you have here, that goes here. So that won't be touched. And once you cut here, it will actually give you some of the layers in front too, at the same time. So in one shot you can actually make your hair look pretty decent.
The second option would actually be to turn your face sideways, comb your hair in the front, meaning bring all the hair towards you, and actually cut the bottom of it in a straight line. And do the same thing on the other side. That's the only way you can actually reach the back of your head. It won't be perfect, but it will help.
But, like I say, nothing is going to be better than the professional. So don't do it yourself.

+Sakuems So true! My hair is actually growing better since I'm using colour that's less than a tenner, as opposed to over ÂŁ100 colour, trim and style. Plus, most hairdressers where I live are very rude and don't care about keeping customers happy. It is very hard to find decent ones, though where I used to live years ago, they were exceptionally.
It comes to something when we want something done properly, we do it the self.

For everyone saying "just pay for a cut"....some people simply can't. I was one of those people for about 3 years. When a haircut costs $30-40, and you have to decide whether you spend that money on food or the heat bill, well...you don't get the haircut.

I was taking my daughter to salons where a haircut was $15. They always screwed it up, no surprise. A co-worker with waist-length hair told me how she cuts her own hair, and I tried it on my daughter. It worked perfectly and her hair was gorgeous! That was how I trimmed her hair for a year or so. Then I found another technique that I tried, and it worked just as well. No more screwed up haircuts and wasting my money! I cut my hair and my daughter's hair from now on. It takes literally thirty seconds and turns out perfect every time.

Most people are doing alright in life and don't AT ALL understand the concept of people not being able to afford things. It's a foreign concept and actually sad that this many people don't feel the pain of those who can't barely feed themselves. This only means that the concept of charity makes even less sense to them.

    • @sonjadover2715
      @sonjadover2715 Pƙed 4 lety +43

@@shelmmii9425 youre totally right, which is really sad. I have learned behaviours from when I had to triage my expenses and decide which bills to pay and scrape money together for food. Those days are over for me, but out of principle I won't pay for certain things. I still cut and colour my own hair, I love second hand clothes, I wash dishes by hand to reduce water bill. When you've literally had to search your house top to bottom to find nickles and pennies to buy food, you realize everything truly does add up. And that there are always people out there who have it worse.

I have very long thick wavy hair. I'm not gonna lie, I have incredible hair. It grows really fast and can get really long đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïž. I always want layers, but hair stylists hate doing it cause it's so long and thick. So they charge me $100 and take 2 hours to cut it. This morning I wanted 5" cut off. Called salon, not working today. Searched youtube = less than a minute and free. I pulled my hair forward like he showed first. Took shears, cut straight across five inches up, Gorgreous haircut. Better than I get at a salon. Took less than a minute and was free. GOT THE CUT OF MY DREAMS FOR FREE. Wish I could share photos. đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïžđŸ˜Š

For anyone wondering if the first method works - I just did it to my wife last night. Took one second. She has long hair down to about her mid back. She wanted three inches off and we did that. Looks great. Saved about $20/$25 it would cost at a salon. Looks like I’m cutting her hair from now on.

With fine thin hip length hair, I was desparate for a solution that does not cost $75-100. Held out on a hair cut for almost 3 years because i refuse to pay those exuberant costs. Finally mistered up the courage to try this at home after watching multiple videos and tutorials. Stumbled across this video that an 8 year old could easily accomplish. The results were amazing!! For years i jave ask stylist to layer my long hair and few ever get it right. This was the layered haircut of my dreams. Gave my hair loads of texture and volume to my thin locks. The only amendment to the tutorial i made was trimming the long point of hair left over in the back straight across using two fingers, a mirror and snipped away. I will never be back to a salon, thank you sir!

Too much work to make it lay nicely) so I found a tutorial and did it myself. I loved it! my best friend even commented on it, and her mother is a hair dresser. Now my hair is past my shoulders, and being thin and fine, I think I just need a trim. I don't really have money to spend on my hair this time of year.

I’ve just mustered up the courage to do this. I was hesitant (despite all the positive comments here) because my hair is really thick. It’s turned out great! Easily as good as I’ve had at the hairdresser! I would really recommend it. It’s quick and easy and never had to leave the house. If you’re not sure, just cut less off initially so you can prove to yourself it works, then do it again straight away and cut a bit more off the length. Thanks so much for this video❀

Thank you for this video. My daughter has long hair and it was getting hard to brush. I'm a bit limited on funds the next few weeks, so I did the first option you showed of bringing all her hair forward and cutting it across. I also cut into the line a bit at an angle with the scissors to make the line less blunt. When we combed it back, she was very happy with it! It looks lightly layered around her shoulders! Thank you again.

If you're watching this and want to know how to do it properly > first, have a shower and wash+condition hair. When hair is wet, GENTLY comb it all forward from the neck to the front (with conditioner the comb should glide through), so it dangles down in front of you. Make sure there is a thin wall of hair (not a round ponytail), and then cut evenly across in a straight line. This works better the longer the hair is. You will get a slight layering effect.

I think his statement of not cutting ur own hair and going to a hair dresser instead is straight out a gimmick. Salons charge a ridiculous amount of money for cutting hair and half the times they don't even do it properly. I've been to numerous hair dressers to get color and cuts and they rob me so much. One person even burned my scalp so badly that I had blisters in the back of my head for an entire week. I will never go to a salon to get my hair colored ever again because of her. Cutting ur hair at home is safe and cheap. All u have to do is learn from trial and error and cut in small amounts. Over time u'll learn.

I agree with you. Never have i had a good cut before i always walk out crying. I think its because most hairstyles tend to be outdated and automatically wanna give everyone layers or a damn scene looking mullet layers layers and more layers especially when their asian! Asians dont know the struggle of thick curly frizzy hair, they're hair is fine silky and flawless. So giving layers or a cut to someone whos hair is thick and curly is the worst. Layers onmy create more volume. Its best to cut it oneself at home.

You just sound like someone whos never satisfied. As for the person burning you scalp, i understand totally messed up and you shouldnt have to go through that. As for prices, we have to make a living too. Most of the time people dont know much about hair especially when it comes to color. Hair isnt just hair its chemistry. And everyones hair is different. We are taught that certain thing will do this of you have done it this way, and its not like that all of the time because hair is unpredictable. Take the time to actually find a good stylist and prices will be worth it and know that your hair isnt gonna look exactly like the picture you show them because thats not how things work.

No one in my local family goes to the shop anymore and they always have a great style. I even rework my wigs now on my own as my own hair starts to thin. One thing he did not say is that cutting straight across will almost always make your hair look like you did it yourself. To point cut the ends makes all the difference! Very interesting.

I don't blame the model for looking angry, For a professional, his method of handling hair is way too rough. The way he kept throwing her hair around, it was actually tangling her hair up. It didn't help that he was violently running that brush through her hair, which looked like it was tugging on it. A professional should know that with hair as long as hers, you're supposed to brush from tip to root, continuing to move the brush downwards. Instead of just throwing it around, he should have taken the time to move it up and over gently, and brush it out slowly. Just because it's supposed to be a quick demonstration, doesn't mean he has to violently handle her hair, he's going to end up damaging it majorly.

I have long, thick, coarse, VERY wavy hair.
I quit my job to WFH, so on a very tight budget right now
My hair was almost down to the middle of my back so I said, scr*w it -- I bent over and gathered my hair together (I didn't brush it first because it's just too wavy), pulled it a little taut and just chopped it. About 4 1/2 inches.
And that was it! Looks and feels great. I even have the layers I've always wanted, that I never got my stylist to do the way I wanted, which was what I got with this easy cut. Go figure...

If you want shorter layers then cut it with this method and then section off the top half of your hair, once again pull all your hair forward into a section in the front, and chop away! Doing this method in sections turns out a little better in my opinion. Also, using a pony as a guide works wonders.

I used a plastic clamp (the ones used to close^^ for food, like chips...etc.) to really block the hair and cut straight. I actually started with the second method to get a sideways layering then finished by cutting just a little (putting the plastic clamp just at the limit where the back bottom hair where not clamped any more and cut the rest to get a slight vertical layering. The results is really nice. I did it on dry hair, washed them afterward and it's really nice (at least on wavy long hair)

Wrong. You should not wash your hair everyday because you're ripping off your scalp's natural hair. And if is really oily, then wash it every other day. And if you can, wash it twice a week. It gets really oily because is used to be ripped off oils everyday, to make itself stable it produces excess oil. Sort of common sense. I'm not trying to be offensive or anything btw. Just so you know.

Shampoos strip your hair of the natural oils which protect your hair, over washing is the only reason for needing to use extra products like hair oils to compensate for the loss of moisture and stop your hair drying out. So don't wash your hair as often because it's a con to get you to buy more products! As has been said once a week (depending on how oily your scalp gets) is often enough to wash.

Who knew when this video was posted, that there would come a day when going to a professional wouldn't be an option. But here it is, during a global pandemic. Thankful for it now.

i agree with vancityguri. I've had hair knee-length and now it's past my hips again. I will never go to a hairdresser again! They just want to CUT CUT CUT! They are butchers. They can't even cut in a straight line. I've been to several and one made me look like a clown after his perm. Stay away from them IF you really want long gorgeous hair. I trim my own hair now and am never disappointed.

Okey...real tip... if you really know how to cut your hair and really know how you want your hair...Do it... actually hairstylist is here only if you actually don't know how to cut your hair or don't know what you want....

Why is this titled 'How to Cut Long Hair Yourself'??? The only information provided was a snarky hairdresser yanking on a head of hair telling all of us not to cut our hair by ourselves... 😳 👎Hairdressers like the one in this video are exactly WHY I'm looking for ways to cut my own hair.... Sheesh.

but he gave us valuable information. I think that was better than information from any other internet "gurus". he only said that because it's risky and it can result in disaster. so it was like "if you really have to..." .... damn. internet is full of whiners.

Simple instructions on how to cut long hair by your self. I did it with good results. Can’t believe what all these whingers are complaining about with the model looking pissed off etc

Every time I have gone to a "PROFESSIONAL" they do exactly what I asked them NOT to do and they mess up my hair! I don't care if its a cut or color. Every single time no matter which one I go to. So I do my own and I am happy with the results.

I have curly hair that reaches the middle of my back.
Every time I go to the salon it costs me at least $100.00 for a trim. (Trim and styling fee)
This is day 4 of my straightened hair (hair wash day) so I decided to try out this tutorial.
I tipped my head forward, combed the hair through, gathered my hair in my hand and trimmed about an inch with the other hand.
It was so easy, and it looks great.
I will be doing this from now on!
My tip would be to do this on straight dry hair, with sharp scissors.

Make sure you don't take off the model's head while brushing...xD and it would have been more significant if she did it herself ;as in this is a DIY video?!?

As someone who cuts her own hair and that of her kids and husband (well husband is frequently shaven) And has been doing it for over 10 years (gosh I should have saved all that money I saved!) I'd say try it! If you don't like it it will grow back!
Just please cut your hair when it is wet. If its not wet you won't get a nice and clean cut (and your cut off ends will fly everywhere). And you will have some pieces of hair that are longer then they should be because they were not pulled upp thight enough with the rest.
And don't start off (to) short... you can always cut again but you can't glue it back on! ;)

I've had such nightmarish experiences with hairdressers I never want to go again. However, the diy videos aren't great. Like this one, as he doesn't cut the hair we don't know how it would look to use his method. In other videos they deliberately don't show the end result properly. Some just flick their hair so you can't tell if its even or not.
This looks like a simple method so I'll try it, my hair is very long so it won't hurt. And I don't have to spend nights in tears over someone else's handy work.
