    I just love Lena Horne's voice. And, for what it's worth, I think she got even more beautiful as she got older.

    I always liked Lena Horne. :o) 'Course I was born too late for her prime time fame, but I am a fan of hers because of the films and TV appearances I've seen her in. Sad she died last year or two. :o(

    🎉This lady was a great performer! ❤ Her voice was amazing and so was her appearance. 😮 My only complaint was that her accent was a bit thick sometimes so it detracts from her acting 😢. I still think she's in the top 10 of all female singers! 🎉❤😊 We miss you so much! 😢🎉

    @genesislover It's likely that this wasn't even on in the South. Back in the 50s, the sponsors of the shows had a great deal of power. Jules Montenier, the maker of Stopette, wouldn't allow the show to air in areas of the country where Stopette wasn't sold. This means that one-third of the country never saw WML until 1958 at the earliest. Many of the markets where the show wasn't shown were in the South.

    Response to Michael J. Eastman: When these shows aired, the fans of that time were aware, owing to Variety, and the entertainment sections of newspapers and newsmagazines. The shows producers couldn't foresee that these shows would be seen 45-63 years later.

    And you "know" that she was "asked to rush off" because . . . ? Lots of other mystery guests left pretty abruptly after their bit was over if you watch the clips.

    @arashtony Yeah. You have to remember, this was the upper crust New York crowd. Which has always been very liberal even in the 50s.

  • @TheThissalantine
    @TheThissalantine Před 12 lety +2

    @cldwarkids True beauty was found in underwear that weighed pounds and pounds, in an hour's worth of carefully applied makeup...class was found in senate hearings by senator McCarthy....style was Shirley mcLaine kicking up her legs to reveal she didn't have panties on for papparazi. it's easy to romanticize the past and that's fine. Just as long as we don't have to relive it.

  • @nickelwindow53
    @nickelwindow53 Před 13 lety +1

    @arashtony IKR I think back to I wonder if the poor black celebs had to leave to studio throught the back door and if they even allowed blacks in the audience, but these were the type of celebs that probably would not do it at all if they were that racist I would hope.

  • @TheThissalantine
    @TheThissalantine Před 12 lety +3

    @arashtony having been raised by 'very liberal' parents who then turned right around and tried to teach their own children not to associate with black kids, the phrase 'very liberal' is indeed correct in context. Only by today's standards would it be 'comparatively' so. Enlightenment isn't attained in a day. That certainly isn't an excuse, nonetheless it's a truth.

  • @EBLLC
    @EBLLC Před 11 lety +5

    That irritates me, too. Wish they would spend a little more time with the guest. They may know them, but the fans want to know what they are like off-camera, and what they might currently be doing.

    @nickelwindow53 Yeah, I'm always a little nervous when watching these old videos too. I always wonder whether they are going to accidentally let some of their racism show, but then I remember how silly that is. There were always cool level-headed people, even in the 1950s, and even in the South.

  • @1feloniouspunk
    @1feloniouspunk Před 13 lety

    @bbath7 I think I could agree with your comment if the phrase "very liberal" didn't connote that treating black people as equal to any other race is something beyond fair. How about "comparatively liberal"? Sorry, is the editor in me coming out? I've been writing all day....
