Simplified Impression: Painting a Landscape with a Simple Process

- In this CZcams tutorial, I'll demonstrate my loose painting approach, focusing on capturing the essence of a scene with just a handful of colors.
With a limited palette comprising warm and cool primaries, along with burnt sienna and yellow ochre, we'll strip away complexity and follow a simple process. This streamlined process not only makes painting more approachable but also encourages creativity and spontaneity.
Beginning with the darkest values, I'll lay the foundation of our landscape, quickly building up to the middle values and lights. Along the way, I'll share insights and techniques to help you paint with confidence and flair.
As we near completion, we'll add bold impasto strokes in the foreground, infusing our painting with texture and depth. Enjoy the demo and let me know what you think in the comments.

It's always amazing how you seem to so effortlessly transform a rather unremarkable photo into a gorgeous painting. I'm just getting into painting and my attempts at this kind of loose, impressionistic style are pretty medicore but I hope to be able to achieve something like this with practice eventually. Many thanks Malcolm. I’ve finally started to paint simplifying everything, darks and shadows then middle values and then lights. Also paying more attention to shapes which makes things easier and freer. Great tip to clean off brush when painting over wet paint. Great video.

Love this demo Malcolm ! I have a question for you, what must I do if I want the tree on the left to be the focal point? I have a sketch of an olive tree which I want to stand out. Thx
Biggest tip is to move it into the focal area in the rule of thirds. Use strong light and shadow to help the trunk stand out against the light. That should make a good start.
