In this video I review the DYU A1F 16 inch folding electric bike. I'm really excited because this is actually my first ebike.
Taking a quick walk around there's a preinstalled cargo rack on the back which feels very solid and sturdy. On the left side of the handlebar is the power module and bell. The seat height is fully adjustable using the quick release lever. The A1F also features front and rear disc brakes as well as fenders over both wheels. On the front there's an LED headlight and reflector. And finally the throttle is a switch located on the right side of the handlebar. To power on, press and hold the center Mode button for 2 seconds and wait for the indicators to light up. And then it's all ready to go!
To get moving you don't have to push start the bike. It'll start going as soon as you press the throttle. Although if you're on an incline a little push can help it get going a little quicker. The DYU A1F is considered a city bike. And the 16 inch wheels are perfect for paved surfaces. There are 3 riding modes available. When the power is off, the A1F functions like a regular one speed pedal bike. Or if the power is on, you can tell it's in manual mode when none of the numbers are lit up on the controller.
Then there's assist mode which provides varying levels of power from the electric motor while pedaling. The amount of push power is indicated by one of the 3 numbers on the main module. Assist mode really helps when you want to keep up your speed while going up hills or to achieve maximum range. And then there's full ebike mode where you just press the throttle switch and go without having to pedal. Often it's nice to pedal whenever you can because it actually helps the bike go a bit faster even on flat surfaces. I've ridden the A1F many times and I can tell you that it's easy to pedal uphill in motor assist mode. It's almost like there's 3 additional virtual gears.
The A1F has a 350 watt brushless motor powered by a 36 volt 7.5AH battery which takes about 5 to 6 hours to fully charge. The range using the electric motor only is between 15 to 35 miles depending on terrain and weight of the rider. The range actually increases to 30 to 37 miles in pedal assist mode. And speaking of weight, the bike itself weighs 48 pounds with a maximum load of 265 pounds. Priced at $390 on Amazon, I'm really impressed with how it performs! And I'll list this here in the description so it's easy for you to find.
One of things I like a lot about the A1F is the ability to fold it up. This really helps with transporting it around to different locations easily. In a hatchback, van or SUV you'll have no problem with space. However, in my sedan it's definitely not going to fit in the trunk. But at least I'm able to load it into the back with the seats folded down. It's not ideal but at least I can take the A1F with me in this vehicle.
This ebike has an IP54 rating which means it can resist water from any angle but it is not waterproof. And because the charging port is on the bottom, make sure the protective cap is always in place before riding.
There are a lot of good things about the A1F I mentioned but here are a few things you should be aware of. It does not have a security alarm or electronic lock. To turn the headlight on or off, press and hold the Plus button for 2 seconds. The instruction manual actually didn't provide the correct directions for this. And regarding the taillight, it's powered separately from the bike's main battery. Also, the taillight doesn't light up when you apply the brakes.
At just under $400, I think DYU A1F is a great ebike. The A1F is not quite as portable as a scooter, but with the ability to fold, it's definitely a bike worth considering for alternate transportation.
