- Flying to a big event like Sun 'n Fun is never routine, but nothing would have prepared me for this flight. Come along and see how things got from bad to worse, from easy to confusion - and how it all came to a happy end.
This flight was on April 2, 2019, taking off from Fort Lauderdale Intl. heading to Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. Enjoy the view from the cockpit with me as this story unfolds.

Hey Martin, great video. I’m the Seneca in front of you (1229T). Glad our persistence paid off!
Hey Michael, I am so glad you left a note here. I feel like we bonded over this experience, even though we've not yet met in person. Will you be at Oshkosh? Can I buy you a beer there? Would be great to meet in person.
Best, Martin
@@martinpauly - I'm glad both of you guys made it.
@@martinpauly & Michael Lombardo; nicely handled you two
Yes excellent work Michael - and not without humour too ;)
@@martinpauly Hey Martin, I won't be going to Oshkosh this year, but definitely next year. Hopefully I can catch up with you at sun and fun next year! I sent over a facebook message if you want to chat more. Thanks!
I was holding a Lake Parker for almost 1,5 hours VFR. We had to be at 4-500 ft, so you did the right thing and stayed IFR.
Gilles Gillesen Hi Gilles, thanks for that report. I’m glad I was up there instead of down low with so many aircraft all circling the lake. Was the visibility ok, or how difficult was it to keep track of the other airplanes?
Your videos set the standard. Thank you for all the effort these take, for us to learn and live a bit vicariously your interesting life.
Thank you for the kind words, David. Much appreciated!
- Martin
Well, the temptation to “scud run” to get into the Lake Parker VFR hold would have been strong, and it appears others took that alternative, but I think you did the much safer and prudent thing, and thankfully got in. Good job!
Dennis Dabney I think I took the easier, more predictable choice. I don’t like being so close to so many other airplanes.
- Martin
For sure. I am really wondering how the VFR aircraft were maintaining legal cloud clearance. I would have continued IFR based on what I see in the video no matter the pressure from ATC or my gut.
Martin, Great video as always!!! That was some crazy sh!t!
That was pretty crappy of them to close 30 minutes prematurely. NOTAMs are published for a reason! Just as we must adhere to them, so should the publishers (short of an emergency). Piss poor planning/management on Sun'n Fun's behalf! I doubt I'll go back.
Hey Martin, as a new Instrument pilot your videos are the best. It feels like you're my mentor or something even though I've never met you. I know you're not an instructor or anything but there's still so much to learn from the content you put out there. Thanks for everything!
Colin Thanks, Colin. Glad to hear!
Happy landings!
- Martin
I'm working on my instrument rating and I agree. Videos like these are really helpful, Martin. Thank you.
@@jonthepilot6924 My pleasure, Jon.

Outstanding video. On the edge of my seat
Very good. Was like watching a suspense thriller of what goes on behind the scenes. It's not easy orchestrating these events when Weather holds all the cards.
I guess one should expect the unexpected when flying to these events.
- Martin
Great ADM and excellent flying. 👍
Great one Martin. Thanks for the continued effort. It’s valuable every time - much appreciated.
Travis Rogers Thank you, Travis.

Wow! What a total cluster. Thanks for the video and I hope everybody got down safe.
Thanks. Yes, everything was great at Sun 'n Fun after the initial confusion.
- Martin
Love the tail camera! Fantastic perspective. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
Thanks, Mike. Yes, the tail camera is nice - I was just bummed I didn't get to fly along the coast (as filed); I was hoping to get some nice footage from the tail camera there. Next time!

Love this video...thanks for posting! The content of your videos is incredibly informative for new low time pilots like me! Keep em coming!!
Doug Harris Thanks for the kind feedback, Doug. Glad you found the video helpful.

I agree with you about staying IFR all of that time when there were so many VFR at Lake Parker, and... .
Glad you made it in.
Great video and good decision making in very tempting situation, thanks for the videos.

Great video. Great landing too under pressure..
Now that was CRAZY!!!!!! Dude i went through so many emotions with you hahaha

That's where j got my Commercial, IR and MEL ! And j volunteered for the Sun'n Fun 1998 as a translater for the French journalists ... Met some friends and had an unforgettable experience ... Thanks for sharing and for the precision in your com talks !!!
Great video. Your patience through this is commendable. I was getting anxious just watching this. Plus the bonus of it all is that you ended up getting that primo parking spot at the end of 9R! Great videos and channel, keep them coming!
Yes, that parking spot I ended up in couldn't have been any better. Almost on the extended centerline of the main runway, like you wrote. I had my own little airshow each morning when the warbirds were arriving. Or the Blue Angels one morning. I would PAY to get that same spot again next year.
- Martin
Fantastic story telling. Well done.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

Martin- Great video! I was biting my nails for most of your flight. Nicely done👍

Outstanding. I was on the edge of my seat!
As was I during the flight! :-)

Great video and comments Martin!
Thanks, Don! :-)
- Martin
Great Job Martin, monumental patience to deal with all of that!
Yes, this one did require patience! I was so glad it all worked out in the end.
- Martin
This one was intense! I was really feeling for you when they denied you after all that holding but luck and good fortune were on your side to slide in as the last plane landing! Very good flight. A lot to think about with all the planes and special procedures in place. Good call not trying to cancel IFR and cheat your way in VFR.
What an experience, Martin. You kept your cool all the way till the landing. Honestly, i’d just divert right after heard that airport is closed from the arrival guys. Cheers.
Diversion was always an option, of course. Multiple other airports nearby, but I had plenty of fuel onboard.
- Martin
Well that was interesting! Glad you finally got in safe and sound.
Me, too. :-)
Thanks.
- Martin
M…your stuff is the best and not easy to do. Very much enjoy your efforts and thanks for doing what you do.
I love making these videos. They do take time to make, but like they say, time flies when you're having fun.

Great video Martin. Somehow I've missed this one. Moral of the story... persistence does pay!. Really enjoy your video's!
Fantastic video and good flying. Good decision making as well. No great adventure without its share of adversity. This is what makes it all fun.
Robert Thrailkill Thanks, Robert. A nice challenge, and I learned something from it.
And of course Sun ‘n Fun was a blast!
Nice job Martin! Keep up the great videos.
Thanks, Tim :-)
All the best!

This is one of your greatest videos, great ending!
daru2001 Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Fantastic video, Martin! I've seen a few of the craziness that was the Sun N Fun approach but dang if this isn't the most stressful!
Glad you enjoyed it - and thankfully 99% of our flights are are lot less stressful than this one.
- Martin
Thanks Martin, great video...great landing!!!
Glad you liked it!
- Martin
Another great video Martin. Smart call staying on your IFR clearance as long as you did and not got in the middle of the VFR holding mess.
Thanks, Peter. And yes, looking back I believe I made the right decision that day.
- Martin
Great job Martin! Good decision by you and the Seneca to stay in the IFR hold. I'd of done the same thing with what I was seeing out your window. As far as the F bomb your patience was amazing I'd of let a few go before that but then again you are a much more refined gentleman than I'am. The old moniker "never hurts to ask or beg if necessary" worked out well for ya, glad ya got in as we all know what a pain it is to divert. Can't wait for the next video keep up the good work!
jetdoctn Thanks, Mike - hope to see you soon somewhere!

I think you did the right thing. This was stressful to watch, I can't imagine being there
Another great video!
Cool pilot and great landing chap
Thanks, Drew.

Awesome Video and explanations ! Thanks Martin !

This is so awesome!! I live in Lakeland and growing up i dreamed of being a pilot, but never did. But Ive always enjoyed sun n fun and everything about aviation. So to get to HEAR everything that was happening above my home a few days ago was absolutley mind blowing to me. This was a really awesome experience for me.
Thank you very much - I am happy to hear you enjoyed it.

Great flight thanks for sharing!

Martin, I was following the Sun N Fun arrivals live on Flightaware and also listening to LiveATC that day just because that's what I like to do. I happened to see N70TB on my screen and I said to myself, hey that's Martin Pauly! Then I watched you fly in circles all over the place and wondered WTF was going on and if you were actually going to get in before the airport closed for the airshow. Watching everything unfold on my screen, I assumed you were the last one in that day so thanks for confirming the full story with the video. It sounded like the controllers at LAL were hoping the last few planes out there would declare low on fuel so they could justify keeping the airport open and letting them in, but the last guy out there didn't take the hint and ended up diverting.
Jeremy Weiss Hi Jeremy, I don’t think I’d declare low fuel just to get in there. Might have repercussions like checking your flight planning and fuel calculations, and questioning your decision making up to that point. At any rate, I was glad to get in and be on the ground.
Thanks for keeping an eye on me on FlightAware! :-)
- Martin
Hi Martin. What a great video! From my perspective you did a fantastic job of safely playing the hand ATC dealt you. I applaud your decision to stay IFR until the conditions improved and not joining the gaggle orbiting the lake in what had to be marginal VFR. Also kudos for sticking to your guns at the last and negotiating approval to land with the Tower. It was very unfair of ATC to shut the airport down at a time earlier than the NOTAM arrival procedure stipulated, particularly given the traffic stacking up due to the earlier runway closures. Well done sir!
Thanks, Randy. Maybe someone from SNF or from Air Traffic Control will see this, and consider making the airport closure more transparent to everyone involved.
- Martin
Excellent as always Martin! Good demonstration of pilots remaining in control of the situation - you and the Seneca did some first-rate operations there! I imagine a less experienced pilot would find that very daunting indeed.
Thanks, Jason. The Seneca pilot actually saw my video and responded here with a comment a couple of days ago - I thought that was very cool!
- Martin
Really Good Vid - Glad you made it in for the airshow.
Thank you! :-)
- Martin
This was an excellent vid! Wish I'd been flying pax for the great visuals and excitement! I live in Lakeland/WH.
That ADS-B traffic and weather sure is a nice thing to have for environments like a fly in.
Rjh Rhjj Agreed, those were very useful on this flight.
- Martin
Another great video. Next best way to learn other than flying myself. Thanks! (p.s. glad you talked your way in!)
Thanks, Mark!
- Martin
Great video. In some ways it makes me want to start flying again and in other ways it reminds me why I now leave the flying to the professionals. Very entertaining.
Thanks, Joe. It was a somewhat extreme example of how sometimes the best laid plans don't work out when we fly - though in the end it still worked out. These challenges (usually they are much more benign) are part of the fun of flying for me.
- Martin
A real snowball without a snowstorm. That ATC chatter sounds like actors from the movie "Dr. Stranglelove".
That is weird to hear ATC asking people if they can cancel IFR. Crazy arrival though! Thanks for sharing it all in this great video.
Very nice flying on all points! Take care.
Thanks, John.
- Martin
Epitome of the squeaky wheel..... very well done!!!
Thanks, Ronald.

I don't usually like suspense but I had to watch all of your video. Had it been me my 'flakes' would have been frosted but like you I would have tried to get in. Thank you for your experience.
Good to hear, Gary.

Phew!! Man! I am sweating after watch this!. I was there on Wednesday, just drove from Miami. Great video!
Thanks, Sergio. You picked the nicer day to get there - Wednesday didn't have any of the rain and low clouds we saw on Tuesday.

I'm excited to see your video on the Volunteers as i was one of the RAF Air Cadets that helped out at Sun'n'Fun
Jeff Franklin I talked with several people from your group, Jeff. Thank you for being there on the ground and for keeping things organized. Events like Sun ‘n Fun couldn’t work without you guys.
Did you have a good time the following week in the Orlando area? I remember you were going to go to some of the theme parks.
Regards, Martin
@@martinpauly yeah we did have a good time the week after especially at Busch Gardens, everyone was sad that we had to leave though, Floridian weather is the best weather even when it's stormy
@@martinpauly and thank you on behalf of RAFAC, i hope the cadets marshelling you did it correctly
The other aircraft issue that closed the 2nd runway was an L-39 with a flat tire. Nice job, keep up the good work!
Richard Snell Thanks for sharing that, Richard. Really unfortunate timing to have TWO such incidents at the same time!

The second closure was a bonanza with a nose gear which failed on landing. Beautiful landing with what looked like “minimal” damage
AWESOME JOB....YOU ARE THE MAN
gary combs Thanks, Gary.

Hey, just wanted to say it was a pleasure to meet you during your stop at the Iowa City airport. I figure it was only a matter of time that our paths crossed.
Hello ccubsfan94. Are you the flight instructor I talked to a while back, in the FBO lobby? I can't tell from the CZcams handles who is who.
Enjoy your weekend, hopefully the weather will be nicer tomorrow.

@@martinpauly Yes, that was me.
Great work Martin, thanks for the Vid!!!! Hope you got yourself a lottery ticket that day...👍
jamil Alkhoury Thanks, Jamil.

Nice work Martin, NEVER GIVE UP, :)
Thanks, mate!
- Martin
Awesome video Martin! I like how you tell a story in your videos of what' s happening and what you're thinking as the video progresses. It makes for a more engaging video and really separates your videos from others on CZcams. This is one of the best I've watched to-date! Speaking of the video, I think it's unfortunate that Lakeland closes the airport 30 mins "before" the time listed on the published NOTAM. If the airport closes at 1:30, then say "1:30", not 2:00. I'm sure if folks knew in advance the time was 1:30 they would plan accordingly. That makes no sense... Glad you made it in!
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I like to tell a story in most of my videos, in addition to showing some fun and/or interesting flying. This one - "Lost over Lakeland" - seems to be quite popular, though I would also recommend my "Why I love Sun 'n Fun" video which I think turned out really well.
Best, Martin
Nice job 'flying the envelope' that closed 90 seconds behind you, being the open airport. I knew you'd stay IFR, for me your reputation gave that away many videos ago. ...lost, not quite, almost left behind to go to Plant City or Winter Haven. Glad you had fun in our part of the world, thanks for allowing us to enjoy general aviation with you.
Good decision making. The weather definitely looked and sounded iffy for those doing VFR in the procedure. Glad you and a few others pushed to get in....the approach controller probably had to shut it off so the tower could clear the lake holding pattern in time, although it did seem like they were jumping the gun a bit even from the tower.
I think your analysis of the situation is pretty accurate, Stephen.
- Martin
Seems to me that the NOTAM was wrong. You shouldn't have to end up having to guess. Great video, by the way.
Thanks, Stephen.
Obviously, the information in the Sun 'n Fun NOTAM was either incorrect or incomplete, regarding the start time of the air show and what that means for closing the airport. And I don't blame anyone for making changes, that's life, that's to be expected. I just wish those changes had been better communicated on the ATIS and on Approach Control. That would have made things much easier.
Best regards,
Martin
Cheers o/ for the good content from ESNQ.
Wow great job. Thanks for the Video. Very informative.

@@joeyg7458 Yes, I've heard that before. :-)
I actually WAS a flight instructor for gliders, when I lived in Germany. I was teaching in the flying club where I learned to fly, and I enjoyed doing that. I no longer fly gliders, but I think flight instruction for airplanes is in the cards sometime in the future. As a first step, I'm currently training towards my commercial rating. In fact, I'm taking the written test in a couple of hours - keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks, and enjoy your Sunday.

You had me laughing as they vectored you all around, but I feel for you with that hearty "F*CK!" Then the joyous "YES"!
And that's why I decided to go to Bartow (KBOW) and drive for 20min to Lakeland
I flew a lesson out of KBOW during SNF, and that airport was packed too.
Love the ground views... good thing you didn’t cancel IFR. By the way, I was on the ground at Lakeland waiting to depart to go to Boca to pick up Stef, and I couldn’t depart due to the disabled airplane.
Niko's Wings Hey Niko, when you were on the ground waiting to depart, did they keep you informed as to what was going to happen? Or was it obvious from what you could see going on on the field?
Nice meeting you in Lakeland, I look forward to seeing you again soon.
- Martin
Another great video, and very informative. Wow
This sort of situation is why it's so important to have the habit of performing that GUMPS check on short final every time. A non-standard, rushed arrival could easily lead to forgetting to drop the gear. Great job hitting the green dot.
You are right, Loren. It's all too easy to deviate from the routine (like a checklist) after so much excitement.

Crazy! Great job. I’ll take Teterboro at rush hour over that!
Pro Pilot Pete Brown Right - Teterboro is more predictable even on busy days than this flight was.

Great video, and it's pleasing to know that you arrived safely. Thanks also for the text. Some of those strong US English accents are really hard for a native English speaker to understand. The subtitles are really appreciated. Fly safe!
