Fastest way to become a software developer:
1. Understand what software development is
2. Understand the programming fundamentals (control flow statements, variables, data structures, databases, algorithms, functions, conditions, etc.)
3. Learn to properly use a programming language. Start with an easy one: PHP or javaScript (if you are more web oriented) and practice point 2.
4. Learn how to use a programming Framework. Start with an easy one based on the language you now know and practice point 3.
5. Read all you can about how to produce quality code at every step of the process of becoming a software developer.
6. Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, and practice.

I recently landed my first software developer role and would like to give my 2 cents. DO NOT get stuck in tutorial hell. Instead of the tutorials, focus on getting really good at one thing (frontend, backend, database design, etc). Build projects even if you don’t know how to start, break the project down into small problems and build each piece one at a time. The more projects you build, the better you get and more comfortable with adding complex features. If you do it this way, you can break into the industry faster, in my opinion. It took me 2 years until I “felt ready” to apply for jobs. In reality, I could’ve started applying after 6 months. I found a job for 80k within a month of searching. Moral of the story, specialize in one thing and build projects around that, then start applying. Good luck to everyone.
Thanks for sharing! If you don’t mind me asking, what did you specialize in and is your job something you can do working from home?
@@namimm3366 I am a full stack developer but I spent most of my time focusing on frontend technologies. In my opinion, the barrier to entry is lower for a frontend dev and there are a ton of jobs available. My job is remote for the time being but will be in office when COVID becomes less of a problem.

This coronavirus lockdown made me push harder to find a viable career alternate. Since past 2 years I was failing to even continue to a basic HTML tutorial because I was in the comfort zone of a normal 9 to 5 finance job. Now with the lockdown, its been like a week and I have already applied a few of the basic HTML commands and made my first web page.

This video has provided an almost a perfect roadmap for me to becoming a software developer. I'm an accounting graduate just like you. I wish I saw this video two years ago. It's been 6 years since I left college. I love teaching style, thank you.
Thanks man, I am 20 years old right now, turning 21 this year. And since I have a entrepreneur degree I am still looking my ways into the IT and development. Since I am not really a school type person I started learning at home, doing some courses and watching vids on youtube and I really start to learn more about it. I hope I can get a career out of this since I am not planning on doing another study for 4 years. Thanks for you're advice man.
I’ll be honest with you. I graduated high school 5 years ago and I want to do something with my life. I really wasn’t the best at school and didn’t really apply myself. If I pursue this I will comment back with an update and make a video if/when I land a Developer job. Thanks for the advice and I wish my future self luck.

This is the clearest explanation of how to become a software engineer and what you need to know about it for the newbies. Thank you so much Imtiaz!
I know I'm PMS-ing but this video made me cry. I have put 6-8 hours a day for months now into learning Python (just strictly Python as a language) from zero CS background and I feel completely unemployable and lacking so many skills I see listed on job postings. This video made me realize I am simply learning the wrong thing to START with. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Yeah data analysis using python is as high paying as software development
A lot of these skills carry over to each other. SQL is different than traditional C programming languages. But Python will definitely help you learn how to think the right way.
Thank you so much for the info and encouragement!
6-8 HOURS, that sounds excessive. 3-4 hours of solid focused learning will be higher yield in my experience. 6-8 hours is medical school levels.
@@Ms452123 This is true. I did 6-8 hours of studying for an IT cert. By the end of it, I was having severe panic attacks. I did achieve my certification, but I likely would never do that again unless I was starving and needed to get certified for more money.
As I'm sitting learning html, I get this video in my suggestions. Data base developing sounds like a plan. I want to learn, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Phython. If getting my foot into the door with that realm, I'm all for it. Thank you for giving clarity and realistic expectation. Many people who promote coding through youtube, say 3 to 6 months or even a year of learning those coding languages before you land a job. It makes sense if you do not have a computer science degree to begin in Database. Thank you!
Thanks alot for the cool, calm and honest explanation. Most other people just come online to brag about coding bla bla and how they started at the age of 10 but you have made it clear. Thank you
Hi Imtiaz, I happened to stumble upon this video and it encourages people to choose these fields inspite of being a non CS graduate. Thanks a lot for this useful video 👍🙏.

Hi Imtiaz,
I saw this video a couple years ago and this helped pivoted my time to focus on landing a data analyst job. Did that for a couple years while teaching myself the needed programing languages & DB and apply them into projects during work. Applied to a bunch of jobs for 5 months and recently got a job offer to be a python dev as a mid sized tech company. Just want to say thanks for creating this vid and changing my life!
reading this 10 months later and you can’t believe the goosebumps I am getting like this just happened yesterday. I am so happy for you and I hope the tech world is treating you well and the job ain’t putting too much pressure.
What is a good bootcamp program to do for this?
@uk49cheatcodes99 Thanks friend! I'm still with the company and the responsibility and WLB is everything I could had dream of. It was so much effort to prepare for this career change but was worth it in the end.
@user-ro9es6kp7y I personally didn't pay for a bootcamp service. All I did was go through udemy tutorial and picked up SQL, Python, and Tableau outside of work. Then I incorporate my learnings into my clearical job to build work experience.
Some time has past since I made this post so a small update. I stuck with the tech company for a year and was laid off as part of the greater tech layoff market in Jan 2023. 3 months later, I landed a 100% remote job as a data engineer at a university. I still stand by what I said in my original post and believe Imtiaz and this vid changed my life because now I can rely on career security and not job security.
Wow this is really awesome. I work for llike 8 years in accounting and i want new career. Hope I can be software developer also

Hi Imtiaz, same thing happened to me as well :), I have graduated Accounting & Finance but from 4 years by now I'm working as a software developer, best decision I ever made. Your courses are the best. Thank you for everything. :)
rlukinn I use Google all the time for more depth into specific aspects of programming. Plus experimenting to see what happens is sometimes the fastest way.
rlukinn
if these courses went into those kind of details viewers would get too bored to go on. these courses are meant to provide a structure to begin exploring. every project worth anything will have things to research and learn about. actually, even those projects worth nothing will... not knowing and having to find an answer is part of learning.
Kevin Parsley Also the most interesting way to learn is pick something personally fun or fascinating + SIMPLE to you as a project. 👍
Me too. Accounting industry sucks.
A coworker got her Accounting degree at night school. The jobs in the accounting dept(large company) paid less then the current job she already had, so she never applied. :(

Four years later and this video is as relevant as they can get. Thanks Sir
and have you gotten anywhere?
Good video. My advice to people that are just starting or don’t have technical backgrounds is to build things and not just read and memorize stuff. That will not work in this field. You can’t just read a book on programming you must program often and create things. Build an application through the entire stack, everyone has an idea for an application just build it. Pick one scripting language, pick a framework, pick a database and get started.

Your idea of starting with SQL is ingenious as a means to break into the field or if you're already in the field, do what he suggested by starting with SQL on the nights and weekends then progress from there.
