Hana really did have Shriver's measure during most of their playing careers. She knew how to play her: keep the ball low and at Pam's feet or make her stretch for those volleys.
Hana really does everything better than Shriver. Shriver's strength is her volleying, but Hana volleys atleast as well, and probably better, and Hana's ground game is light years better. Her return is much better, and her movement in all parts of the court is better. The only thing Pam might have is the serve, but Hana's serve was quite good at her peak, and Pam's serve wasn't quite the same after her early career shoulder problems.
@@travisstrong5389 Hana also had the mental edge over Pam which allowed Hana to play her usual free flowing game against Pam. Interestingly it was a similar scenario for Hana against Sukova and Kohde Kilsch, all tall girls.
@@johnmonastirli1145 Hana seems to have enjoyed playing serve and volley players, possibly because the quicker points suited her temperament. She had a much worse record against Evert, who made her play longer points.
You can see why Pam struggled mightily with Hana. She has a hard time reading where Hana's passing shots are going. Still, when Pam is penetrating with her serve and her approaches, she can trouble anyone.
This may have been Pam's final opportunity to get to a second Slam final. Must be frustrating to take out a player like Martina then go out in the semis
Love her but The way Hana explains herself afterwards screams immaturity and I mean if only someone had told her to pull her head in she may have won more slams instead of making comments which did not endear her to the other top players
There are reasons for that. The same reasons why Andrea Jaeger struggled so much on tour. There were players, your officials, tournament directors, media, etc that took advantage of Hana early on as they cozied up to her. Then after her back injury, when the rumors started that her career was over or she would never be the same, many of these people showed their true colors. Ask Jimmy Arias or Andrea Temesvari about this. They experts same thing. Throw in the language issues and the press' love of treating her and Lendl as the enemy because they were from a Communist country. It made Hana defensive and mistrustful.
@@romania4712 the tennis tour is so exploitative. The women's tour in particular seems to have been terrible. Andrea Jaegar went on record recently to talk about how she'd been sexually harassed as a young teen by female WTA staff. Victoria Azarenka has talked recently about how a lot of girls are in inappropriate relationships with coaches. Evonne Goolagong also talked about how her coach sexually abused her. Nothing ever seems to get done about it.
I think the chec communist background language barrier - think of Navratilova Mandlikova speak in a blunt manner. I don’t think they mean for their phrasing to be discourteous
Ah yes, the “toxoplasmosis “ match. I remember when it happened but have never been able to find it. Also Kathy Horvath’s win over Navratilova at the French Open in 1983.
The Shriver QF and Horvaths win are my most wanted matches I would love to see how a nearly unbeatable Navratilova lost these matches If anyone has them please share I beg you 😊
Strange interaction at end. Hana pulls Shriver in. I know there was some beef between them. Let's face it, Shriver threw shade at everyone. She really was a loud mouth at times.
@@hanamandlikovastennis7724 Well ...Pam as a matter of fact is pretty one dimensional and has nothing else to offer but her attacking style over her good serve and net game. She had no weapons from the baseline, is not a good athlete and does basically the same all the time. In this match there are hardly any exciting rallies and points and with Shriver having no backhand drive, hardly a forehand and no consistency at all it is quite obvious who turns out being the victor. Hana is spectacular with all her shots but hardly shines through in this encounter.
Wonderful match. No wonder Pam made such a great doubles partner for Martina with that serve and net game.

Pam would later become a television tennis commentator - like the wonderful Virginia Wade here, she was bright and articulate with her observations.

Hana was brilliant at her peak. Could we happened to see some peak Mandlikova vs. Sabatini match? Thanks
Did Hana ever have a peak? She was so up and down and she shined at sporadic random times to me.
Shriver r/u at the Australian Open in 81? 😂 Who checked the stats on these broadcasts? She made the S/F.
🤣yes I’ve noticed it also !
81 Australian- Martina beat Chris in that final, 75 in the 3rd.
The umpires in the 70's and 80's sounded like bloody Daleks...
what happened at the net at the end of the match?
I think they talk about it in post matches itw at the end of the video

I know right! Very unique handshake at the end.
I just came for the handshake

For the Horvath/ Navratilova : unfortunately not televised.
@@hanamandlikovastennis7724 a pity Official Roland Garros won't post that such a historical match only match Martina lost in '83 which is insane.

She has since said she was being abused by her coach so maybe that was part of her anger but yes she has since mellowed they say
Hana had beers with a few of the top players, they said she was distant in the locker room, nobody was really advising Hana in those days
grace versus grit. grace won
The haircut on Hana here looks good, the one she had at the end of her career screamed bad lesbian haircut lol
Boring match boring players
Strongly disagree. Maybe not their best meeting, but these 2 players are all but boring.
Shriver is incredibly boring to watch. In turn that did make this match a little dull. Agreed.
disagree as found their styles fun to watch
