For ten bucks that's a hell of a deal. The HP Z machines are sweet. I use a Z440 as my desktop.

Thank you for saving an outstanding machine from becoming nothing more than scrap. I LOVE the Z Line of HP Workstations. I own the Z240 SFF, Z240, Z440, Z640 (DUAL CPU), and the PC I am using now the mighty Z840. Honestly, IMHO HP knocked this series out of the park. Oh and that shroud is indeed to cool the RAM, a feature they removed from the Z40 since they halved the available slots on the board, and secondary CPU sled. ANYWHO now that I am done nerding out For 10 dollars, you did awesome! The HDD Trays alone are worth more than that. YES these can game. That particular CPU with that clock speed will game no problem with either a RTX 3060, or 6700XT. I game with ALL of mine often so you struck gold! I appreciate you my friend.

Thanks so much! I appreciate you.
Stay tuned for the follow up! We will fix it up and take it on a test drive.
Honestly, Intel really crushed this CPU lineup, these things last forever. I wish they still made them this good!
And I’ll be buying more from the scrap heap in the future so be sure to look out for some other treasures

i still use a lot of x79 systems they have aged like fine wine they still run blistering fast in applications , it is ashamed that systems like that are being scrapped they are still very capable systems , a good paring with that cpu is anything up to a gtx 1080 -rtx 2060 type card the cpu can still push those cards great

We had the predecessor of this one, a Z600. The PSU was on the botton and very long. While it looked cool, I was not a fan of the weight and non-standard components. Once It died (mobo or PSU, couldn't knew for sure) we retired it, after all, it was obsolete (didn't even had USB 3!) and those companies don't keep spare parts for long. All you can hope to get was used ones on the grey market.

Yeah, these OEMs want you to only use their stuff and not anything aftermarket. Sad.

What a great little find! Surprised it works tbh, but for $10 and the price of an ssd it's a solid midrange allrounder as it is and an absolute steal. First thing I'd do is give the mobo & removable giblets a damn good clean, probably replace the CPU and RAM fans (and GPU fan if I'm keeping it) and definitely the CPU thermal paste. After that ... well, I'd be keeping in mind the downsides. There's only two, DDR3 and the whole shooting match is 10 years old and you don't know where it's been, so I wouldn't be throwing too much good money at it. Gaming? I wouldn't expect too much out of it. A good GPU will only get you so far, Xeon and DDR3 aren't an ideal gaming combo for 2020s AAA titles but for the non-hardcore stuff it'd pass muster. Batocera etc, hell yea. Media centre, hell yea. Server (not my area of expertise) yes, why not. If I couldn't find a use for it I wouldn't have to go far to find a buyer for a decent profit. It'll be interesting to see what you do with it.

AMT gives you low level control over the computer to the point of powering on or resetting the PC and accessing the BIOS remotely over over Ethernet.
    czcams.com/video/9Rqm5ulU81g/video.html
I think it's like having a little computer with Ethernet access built onto your main computer that lets you view the screen and gives you mouse / keyboard and power / reset functionality.
Even if the main computer hard-locks, you can reset it over AMT.

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. Yeah I can totally see how that’s a useful feature. I don’t really see it on modern machines so I wonder if Intel phased it out or something.

Call me crazy but out of boredom i bought an old 2010 HP Pro small form factor PC for £20 UK money on eBay I upgraded the i3 cpu to an i5 upgraded the ram from 4gb ddr3 to the max 16gb ddr3 and fitted a 128gb SSD and 1tb HDD there sadly was no point fitting a graphics card to it as it is limited to a small graphics card with only a max of 1gb so really pointless anyway once up and running it runs very fast for a 14 year old PC and can play CZcams videos at 1440p at 60fps just more evidence if any was needed that desktop PCs even basic ones were future proofed to last more than 10 years where as a Laptop or all in one PC really is limited in ram and CPU upgrades in comparison.

How are they asking that much? These things are old. I mean they make great Linux machines if you want to run some VMs or write code but they shouldn’t be anywhere NEAR that price
