  • The romantic ruins of Coity Castle near Bridgend, South Wales. It’s part 5 of our places to see in Wales series.
    In the series, we look at some famous and not so famous places around our home country of Wales.
    Coity Castle near Bridgend, South Wales is a Norman castle built in the 12th century by Sir Payn "the Demon" de Turberville, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan.
    Major rebuilding took place in the 14th century and again in the 15th after Owain Glyndŵr laid siege to the castle during his uprising against English rule. Further changes were made to the castle in the early 16th century, including the addition of a third floor.

    This is wild....I just found out today that my ancestors lived in this castle. How cool is that to find out!

    Coity Castle, I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this - geez, we used to cycle there often from Pantyrawel as young teenagers (50 years ago!).

    I saw Coity castle for the first time last Sunday after going on a bit of a detour. I never knew this castle existed before then. I can’t believe your video came up on my feed tonight. Spooky.

      This castle is often overlooked. However, I drove past it a few days ago and it's covered in scaffolding for restoration. I'd check before going.

      Thanks Alan, I hadn't been to Coity Castle since I was a kid. I forgot how impressive the castle ruins were.

    One of the amazing things about visiting Europe is all of the castles which is something we don’t have much of in the States. It’s really cool this castle had some type of moat. I have never seen one with a moat before. How do you know so much history about this castle (which is cool by the way)

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  Před 4 lety +3

      We have a lot of castles in Wales (600) so as a kid we always used to visit one at least every other week

    Cool tour round a castle. I feel like I've watched a mini BBC documentary 😃One of the things I do find interesting about castles and old churches/temples is the layers of rebuilding, which you pointed out. P.s. Love dramatic the part at around 4:50 when the rook is circling around the tower P.p.s. I think the most memorable castle I've been to in Wales is Cardiff Castle, but that's probably because it's still in one piece and you can wander through the rooms. 🏰

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, many of these castles have been used for hundreds of years so have been chopped and changed. Cardiff Castle is interesting, it was actually used as a house in the Victorian era by the Marquis of Bute.

  • @geoffreyturbeville5028

    Great video I enjoyed it. I heard of this castle in Wales. It's haunted also. By a lady, and a man who has a pet. Hope to see more of your enjoyable videos soon. Have a great day 😀

      Thanks. I think there's a ghost story or legend associated with most of the old castles and houses.

    I love the narrative you have done and all the quick transitions between scenes! Very professional, clear footage and no messing around. Fascinating stuff, I wonder what was the functionality of the "thing" that sticking out at 2:50 ?

    • @flydriveexplore
      @flydriveexplore  Před 4 lety

      Thanks, the thing at 2:50 was the remains of a chimney. The chimney was added later and not part of the original 12th century castle.

    I'm not sure what else could be in your written notes, your knowledge of this Castle is pretty amazing. Nice job. I don't know if it was a ditch or had water. I think it should have had water with Crocodiles personally.

      @flydriveexplore  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks, We do have a lot of castles. There are 6 within 8 miles of my house (which is also a castle ... well maybe not!) Good, idea about the crocodiles although I think they'd all die in the first winter.
