Interviewing with Google for TPM role - Cellular Systems Validation, Pixel. Proposed question: "Are you aware of any automated way Google collects performance data on pre-production devices?" or "Could you share with me how SW development teams balance work on field reported issues, verses new feature development?"

    • @CoachErika

Love the second question!!! Such a great TPM question because it shows that you understand the importance of balancing bug fixes against product building.
I'm curious why you would ask the first question -- what are you hoping to hear (or not hear)?
It comes across as a bit intel-mining as written (this is because of the "are you aware" part which feels legalese-y, as well as posing of the question as a Google-wide approach -- Google is huge, lots of other hardware products who may use different validation storages approaches!) Try to focus on questions that the team member will be able to answer confidently for this role and team.
Thinking about what your goals are for asking the question might show you to simply it and still get the signal you're looking for, ie: "how does the team get confident about the performance of pre-production Pixel devices?"

@@CoachErika I've worked at companies where issues reported are sometimes subjective; with automated 'crash' reporting it provides actual data, (stability, uptime, etc) which enhances the field report information. If you don't measure it, you can't improve it.

@@mattkabful absolutely. It's suggest starting with a general question about measuring performance on pre-prod devices then follow up with a more specific question about automation depending on their response.

Excellent video. I am catching up each and everyone of them on your channel! I am going to attend the 1st interview with the hiring manager for a lvl 5 TPM on this coming Wednesday Feb/9/2022. I would like to use leading questions to drive the hiring manager to consider me for lvl 6. How would you suggest me carrying out this conversation and avoid the impression that I already assumed myself getting the job ?

I appreciate your prompt reply! Hope I get your kind advise prior than Wednesday!

The best way to get considered for a higher level is to perform better in your interview, rather than by asking about levels in the interview. I strongly suggest that you do not ask a question about levels in your interview, instead focus on showing that you are at that level.

    • @CoachErika

You can signal a higher level in many ways, most are subtle and require personalized coaching since it's hard to type out in text the nuances of signaling and how to do it in a natural way for yourself. However I'll note a few techniques at a high level, and I do suggest you find time for mentoring with Erika or another PB mentor before your phone screen.
Signalling for a higher level: (1) zoom out, show that you connect the dots between what you do and what it means to the business, industry, broadly -- the most important signal is that you are able to both think strategically and deliver tactically (2) your tone and pace needs to be calm and assured, (3) ask insightful and thoughtful questions. Order doesn't matter, all of these are important.

I am interviewing for an arraignment video tech position with local county jail. I was wondering what would the procedure be in case of a power failure? Also, what would be the proper chain of command in this role?
